Mitch McGary's ESPNHS Blog
Mitch McGary's last ESPNHS blog before he announces tomorrow is now out. There's not too much that we didn't already know. His top three are Michigan, Florida, and Duke. Just reading the blog, I got the feeling that it was really between Michigan and Duke (and if you listen to scouts, it's really down to Michigan). He talks about being comfortable at both Michigan and Duke, but not at Florida. I don't think you decide to go where you're not comfortable.
Here's what he said about Michigan:
What I really like about Michigan is its coaching staff, especially Bacari Alexander. He’s probably one of the most underrated coaches in the country. He really knows what he’s doing with the big men.
I just like that I can trust the coaches there, and I actually like that they’re not on the biggest stage yet. That gives me the opportunity to go there and make a huge impact from day one.
A con for Michigan is that the Big Ten has a reputation for being a slow-paced conference with slow big men who don’t really get out and run the floor at all. That’s not the way that I want to play, so I’ve definitely got to take that into consideration. I know that if I went there it would help change the perceptions a lot.
I also found this interesting: When he talks about the con for Michigan, he talks about the con as part of the Big Ten and when he talks about the con for Duke, he talks about the con as part of Duke.
What he said about Duke:
The con for Duke would be the perception that all their big men do is set screens and rebound and that they don’t get a lot of touches.
However, I know that if I went there I’d change that up because they mapped out how they want to use me and involve me in the offense, which is appealing.
Mitch McGary, Go Blue!

Is he announcing on live tv tomm?
November 2nd, 2011 at 12:57 PM ^
ESPN at 5pm I believe
November 2nd, 2011 at 12:58 PM ^
ESPNU has a recruiting show at 5:00 eastern. He's announcing on air. I'd guess it happens toward the back end of the show.
November 2nd, 2011 at 2:09 PM ^
If the show starts at 5, I would expect an announcement at either 5:29 or 5:59. ESPN didn't get to be tWWL by not knowing how to milk tense moments for all they are worth.

"The Decision" disagrees. Although they did hype that up like no tomorrow.

The best part about McGary potentially picking Michigan, IT'S ONLY THE BEGINNING. With the new facility, basically a new arena, fan interest building and tickets selling the sky is the limit. GO BLUE
NO DAVE BRANDON, THERE ARE NO SLEEVES ON BASKETBALL JERSEYS TO PUT STRIPES!
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:21 PM ^
If you wear an shirt under your jersey, it has to be the same color as the main color in the jersey and it has to be a solid color (aka no stripes). This is aside from the fact that stripes on an undershirt would be the most ridiculous looking thing of all time.
November 2nd, 2011 at 3:31 PM ^
I got kicked out of game for wearing a different color shirt under my jersey....well that and me calling the ref an idiot for making me take it off.

My only regret is that we'll never be able to see Mitch run Jared Sullinger's fatass into exhaustion since by that time some NBA team will have spent a top five pick on him to do a Corliss Williamson impression in the pros.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:29 PM ^
I graduated in spring 2003 when Detroit was laying claim to the NBA title
Had a buddy at UM that referred to taking a dump as "taking a Corliss"
Now that's classy
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
It's Scoreless Corliss Williamson.

C'mon. Big Nasty won a 6th Man Award in 2002! Also, wasn't he a big part of the 04' Championship Team?
Why the hate?

can we please not talk like this is already a done deal?

I can't imagine any male with a healthy-sized penis caring a lot about their MGoPoints.
Sorry, bud.

you leave my MGoPenis out of this!
November 2nd, 2011 at 12:58 PM ^
Wherever he goes he's most likely the #1 pick in the NBA draft when he comes out so he should attend the school he likes best and has the best football team.
We win.
November 2nd, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
Shabazz Muhammad is the consensus #1 prospect. Smart money would be on him going #1.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:15 PM ^
You think a 6'5" shooting guard will go #1 over a 6'10" PF who has decent range, ball skills and can play down on the blocks?
No way.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:22 PM ^
if he's a better prospect, which everyone agrees he is. DeMarcus Cousins didn't go #1, nor did Enes Kanter.

Check with the dudes who picked Akeem Olajuwon and Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan...they might be able to shed some light on this question
November 2nd, 2011 at 3:34 PM ^
You cant group Olajuwon and Bowie together. Olajuwon was solid.
November 2nd, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
Olajuwon was way more than solid. He was spectacular one of the more dominant big men to ever play the game. Yes Jordan was selected below him but I bet Houston never regretted that decision even in hindsight (unlike Portland).
November 2nd, 2011 at 8:22 PM ^
Only grouping them together because both were taken ahead of Jordan and were "bigs". Rightfully should have limited it to Bowie - fair point.
The post I was responding to was claiming you would never take a guard over a top big man.
November 2nd, 2011 at 2:07 PM ^
It depends on the skill sets of the players already on the team making the draft pick. You wouldnt expect a team like the Timberwolves or Raptors to take the same player type two years in a row
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
Even if and right now it sounds like it is a rather larger "if" he doesn't pick Michigan it is great to have Michigan Basketball back on the national stage again and hopefully it is only a sign of great things to come for Coach B and the team.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:02 PM ^
...but in fairness, we should post the other stuff in the blog too:
"I don’t know where I’m heading at this point and obviously there are a lot of analysts out there that are saying I do, but it’s not true.
Hopefully I’ll figure it out within the next 24 hours."
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:06 PM ^
thinks this is true.
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
If he didn't know where he was going, he wouldn't be announcing tomorrow.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:02 PM ^
is very telling...
Also, does anyone know if we have started selling U M jerseys in North Carolina yet?
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:10 PM ^
I think Belien's started to turn the tide of Michigan Basketball. Selling jerseys is a good start. Hell, even people in North Carolina are starting to believe him.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:59 PM ^
wait, what? Oh hell.
November 2nd, 2011 at 3:21 PM ^
I am currently wearing a Michigan shirt in Chapel Hill.
November 2nd, 2011 at 4:59 PM ^
I was wearing one in Raleigh, but then I took it off to swing it around my head, similar to a helicopter
/lame joke
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:53 PM ^
I can verify that all things Michigan are flying off of the shelves down here.
Bring on McGary
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:03 PM ^
"I haven’t heard from any coaches lately. They have let me have my time to think things out after I talked to all three about a week and a half ago."
If he is saying this, the tweat the other day abotu Duke backing off and throwing in the towel seems odd, considering everyone is giving him space right now if that is true...actually makes me a bit uneasy about tommrow.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:04 PM ^
If I had not heard all of the scout speculation out there, I would have guessed that Duke was his favorite based on his comments.
Assuming he does go blue tomorrow, is it wrong to hope that the lockout lasts a few years so that our top-tier talent stays as well?
November 2nd, 2011 at 2:59 PM ^
I got the same impression. He said he loved Duke. I think he said he loved everything about Duke. That sort of worries me. I've tried to play down my excitement, but it seems like everyone is saying he's going Blue. I'm waiting until I hear it straight from the horse's mouth.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:06 PM ^
Duke baketball players have a harder time adjusting to the NBA, because they do not lift weights. All they do is cardio.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:09 PM ^
Is that actually true?
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:13 PM ^
There is no In-Season weightlifting. North carolina uses a similar program also.
November 2nd, 2011 at 1:16 PM ^
clearly have no idea what they are doing when it comes to college basketball. Imagine how good they could be at basketball if they got Barwisized.
