Rivals Duke Insider conceding McGary to Michigan
Over at http://www.umhoops.com
they just posted a twitter from the Rivals Duke Insider expert regarding McGary:
I'm waiting for Muppets!
November 1st, 2011 at 7:12 PM ^
McGary would still be one and done since he spent a year in prep school after graduating HS.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:24 PM ^
i'll wait till thursday to open the champagne.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:25 PM ^
Should McGary accept an offer, we will be full up, at least until such time as someone chooses (or is encouraged) to move on. I have read in other threads that the success of the basketball team might have an effect on the recruiting of Zach Banner, who would then have the opportunity to play BOTH high level football and basketball.
Am I correct to assume that Banner's schollie would be charged to the football team, and that while he could play basketball, he wouldn't count against available scholarships and spots on the basketball team? If so, to have Banner would be a great plus, on top of McGary et al.

You can only have X amount (14?) guys on scholarship on the basketball team. A scholarship athlete who plays for both the football and basketball teams would count against the scholarship counts of both.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:32 PM ^
Wouldn't that basically be "double-dipping," so to speak? I thought one player could only receive a scholarship from one team, so either the football or the basketball team would be charged with a scholly, but not both. How did it work with Tai Streets and Matt Trannon (of msu)? Am I mistaken?

You generally can't pad your football or basketball team with guys who are on non-football/non-basketball scholarships, but you can pad your basketball team with a football player. From the NCAA Division I 2011 manual:
15.5.10 Multi-Sport Participants.
15.5.10.1 Football. [FBS/FCS] In football, a counter who was recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) and/or offered
financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more
sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football. A counter who was not recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8)
and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (including
basketball) shall be counted in football. (Revised: 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95, 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96, 1/15/11
effective 8/1/11)
15.5.10.1.1 Initial Counter. [FBS/FCS] A counter who previously has not been counted in football
shall be considered an initial counter even though the student-athlete already has received countable financial
aid in another sport.
15.5.10.2 Basketball. A counter who practices or competes in basketball and one or more other sports (other
than football) shall be counted in basketball.

are wrong. See: Charlie Ward.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
That's correct. Banner would be a scholarship football player and a walk-on basketball player, similar to Tai Streets in the 90's.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
Banner's scholarship would come from football. but it doesn't matter. looks like Banner is going to Oklahoma.

What did I miss with Banner? Please help!
November 1st, 2011 at 3:28 PM ^
...waiting to officially buckle up.

Do we know that Mcgary and Robinson III play on the same AAU team? Just a little fun fact incase it hasnt been posted already.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:36 PM ^
Well, I've had my five-point harness on for weeks now. I don't know about you guys.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:40 PM ^
they what? I want Mr. McGary to come to Michigan as much as the next MBB supporter, but there is no reason to be estatic. Until he puts on a Michigan hat and announces, it is still up in the air.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:47 PM ^
Still not getting my hopes up until he says Michigan and signs during the early period. Never know what we might hear in a few days.
November 1st, 2011 at 3:54 PM ^
Not going to lie, just seeing Duke and McGary in the same topic title scared the shit out of me.
November 1st, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
I remember watching Ward in a pick up game in the CCRB some time a year or two after his eligibility. He was amazing making layups and dunking at will, handling the ball with ease and I'm sitting there going 'oh my god why isn't he in the NBA.'
Then he started missing mid ranger jumpers and looking incredibly human. And I was like "oh that's why." He was really epic to watch before that though.
November 1st, 2011 at 4:24 PM ^
You never know what happens with kids until they actually announce and sign.
November 1st, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
This would be the biggest recruit signing since Chris Webber. That said, I'm waiting fro the official announcement before I start popping any champagne. We've been down this road too many times before only to have our hearts broken by the whims of teenagers.
November 1st, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
This would be amazing.
November 1st, 2011 at 4:59 PM ^
Please no Muppets unless/until he pulls the M hat. No Jinx, kindly thanks.
November 1st, 2011 at 6:39 PM ^
would go towards football since football earns more revenue, or something like that.
EDIT: Oops... way beaten. Awkward.
November 1st, 2011 at 7:17 PM ^
I'm going to end the best recruit debate ... This is the best recruit to be obtained infraction-free and not be disabled by injury since ... (drum roll) ... Sean Higgins. POW. http://statsheet.com/bhsb/mcdonalds_all_american_team/1987/

An - ti - ci - pa - yay - shun is making me wait! This is going to be some big happy news for the maize and blue! I have a good feeling about this!
Go Blue!

McGary's freshman year could be a huge one for the program if Hardaway stays and Trey Burke can at least be a steady starter. The 2011 and 2012 recruiting classes have a lot of talent to add to our already experienced team. I was already excited about this season, but the season after that is looking great as well.
Also, for those saying that McGary is a one-and-done; I did see an interview saying he was looking for a good four-year college. Might mean he doesn't want to make the jump so quickly (I personally wouldn't, college is great). When asked about the NBA he seemed like it was more in the future than something he wanted as soon as possible. That's obviously a silly courtside interview so take it for what it's worth.
November 1st, 2011 at 8:59 PM ^
I am not celebrating until we hear it "straight from the horse's mouth." And make no mistake, McGary could be the "horse" that takes Michigan back to the top layer of the college basketball food chain. But I am still not getting my hopes up too much, because being a Michigan fan has been an exercise in getting hopes dashed during this entire millenium, at least so far.
This has a chance to be THE tipping point in the program's recent history.

I'm not jumping the gun on this one. These media folks have to write something day in and day out. Just because it's written doesn't mean it's factual. The good news is we only have to remain buckled up for a couple more days.

When asked by Dylan of UMHoops.com on who was recruiting Mitch, the big guy responded "IU, Purdue, Marquette, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Miami (FL), Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton and Ball State. I think that’s about it."
SO happy we got in on guys like him, Stauskas, and GRIII early.
