Pick your own jersey. This shit shouldn't be on the board

- Decide to buy Wings jersey
- Order #9
- Howe on back
- ?
- Profit

No, no, no.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy?keyword=Jersey+Fouls
one of the biggest jersey fouls is getting a modern jersey with a historical player's name and number. Gordie never wore a Rbk Edge jersey.

I mean, I agree it isn't the best thing. I would rather have a Howe or Yzerman jersey than have one of a player I like less, though. Maybe buy a replica of a 1960's era Wings jersey then.

#19 is the way to go.
October 24th, 2011 at 1:17 PM ^
I have three jerseys a Probert, Coffey, and Zetterberg. Interestingly enough I find that the Coffey gets me the most props when I'm going to games, at the bar, or just on the street.
EDIT: Not that he's retired yet, but I think Lidstrom is the exception to my rule.
October 24th, 2011 at 1:26 PM ^
Although I still find myself bound by my father's admonition that "A man never wears another man's name on his back", IF you're going to do it (you could always get the jersey with a number you like and no name), I'd say go with a classic/retired player since you'll never have to worry about the player being traded and you'll get a longer life out of the jersey: Howe, Yzerman, Chelios and I'd break that retired player rule only for Nick Lidstrom since he'll clearly never play for anyone else.
October 24th, 2011 at 4:31 PM ^
as that is the same very sage advice that my Dad shared with me. I personally have subscribed to it for every jersey I own sans NFL.
<br>Obligatory NTTIAWWT.

" I'd say go with a classic/retired player since you'll never have to worry about the player being traded and you'll get a longer life out of the jersey"
My Curtis Granderson Tiger's jersey agrees with you.

Well if you buy a jersey, it should be someone you think is teh best. I have a Lidstrom jersey and got it way back when he won the Conn Smythe. Pavel Datsyuk is signed for about 20 more years (maybe slightly less) and he's been a dominant player so that's always a good option. If you are a puck bunny then Darren Helm is the obvious choice.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:47 PM ^
19, 5, and 9 are great choices, but why not consider 32 Stu Grimson, 26 Joey Kocur, 25 McCarty, or 24 Bob Probert. Those could earn you mad street cred. If you want to earn props with the 60 and over crowd, go with 1 Terry Sawchuck. Another completely underrated jersey is 16 Konstantinov...had he stayed healthy, he would have undoubtedly been one of the greatest defensemen to ever wear the winged wheel. As for guys on the current team, expect 13 and 40 to be around a very long time. Go wings.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM ^
I been leaning on Datsyuk. This will be my first Wings jersey, kind of excited. I have plenty of shirts and figured I would go the jersey direction this time!
October 24th, 2011 at 1:05 PM ^
I went with Nick Lidstrom when I got mine a couple years back. All-time legend, team captain, and never played a single game with another team. Datsyuk and Z are probably your best choices of players who will be around into the future.

Don't see Franzen going anywhere anytime soon. Also, Holmstrom would retire before playing elsewhere. Both would be pretty sweede jerseys.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:57 PM ^
I like what you did there. #5 and #40 would be a sweede jerseys as well
October 24th, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
Kronwall would be a good jersey to get...for obvious reasons.
I've always liked the look of "Zetterberg" and "40" on the back.
Helm or Abby cause they're grinders.
If I had to pick I would probably go with Kronwall or Helm.
October 24th, 2011 at 1:05 PM ^
but i feel like howard has to be suggested.
Along with him you couldnt go wrong with a couple old guys not already mentioned such as draper or osgood.
October 24th, 2011 at 1:06 PM ^
You cannot go wrong with a Gordie (just make sure you get the "A" instead of the "C" for original Production Line era verisimilitude) or go with my preference, my beloved Ted Lindsay #7 jersey. (I also have an Yzerman and a Howe, but I love my Terrible Ted jersey.)
October 24th, 2011 at 2:42 PM ^
And a winter classic Lidstrom, with the "C"
October 24th, 2011 at 1:07 PM ^
I have one of each of the Russian 5, but i definitely wear my Konstantinov jersey the most. Vlad the Impaler will live on forever in my heart as one of the most dominant men to ever wear the colors
October 24th, 2011 at 1:28 PM ^
A hundred thousand years ago when I was a kid Slava Fetisov was playing for the Devils and he needed a small medical procedure that my dad did for him. He gave my dad one of his game worns and I still have it. First man to start the wave of Russians in the NHL. Love that jersey but most people don't know who that is.
October 24th, 2011 at 1:32 PM ^
They didn't play NHL 99 then, he was everywhere in that game.
October 24th, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
Damn! If I was wearing a cap I would most certainly tip it in your direction. A Fetisov jersey, now that's some serious street cred.

#7, Red Berenson
October 24th, 2011 at 1:14 PM ^
I bought a #25 Ogrodnick jersey about 10 years ago, and there's not a game that I wear it to where someone doesn't stop me to tell me how cool that is. I like the old school stuff. I'm the guy that has a Tom Veryzer Tigers jersey, as well :-)
October 24th, 2011 at 1:16 PM ^
You're not the guy FSN Detroit shows with a Rod Allen jersey on?
October 24th, 2011 at 2:05 PM ^
...I would totally go up to that guy and say, "I see ya, Big Fella...."
October 24th, 2011 at 1:17 PM ^
19 or 24..... Steve and Probert are the shit! I also like Ted Lindsay.

Under-rated and interesting history. Probably one of the best passers I have ever seen.

So glad someone mentioned Larionov. One of my favorite players ever, he just seemed to be someone who came in night after night and quietly did his job skillfully. Loved that guy, and regret to this day that I didn't buy a Wings jersey with his name on it when they could be easily gotten at the Joe.
October 24th, 2011 at 4:22 PM ^
Probably my favorite Larionov highlight...and he doesn't even pass the puck.
October 24th, 2011 at 1:34 PM ^
I have a Datsyuk home jersey; my next will be a road jersey, either Helm or Konstantinov.
October 24th, 2011 at 1:51 PM ^
Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen are both locked down for many, many years. Kronwall will probably get a huge contract soon as well.
I'm thinking of getting Datsyuk since in my opinion, he's the best overall player in the NHL.
October 24th, 2011 at 2:08 PM ^
The Datsyuk jersey is pretty common-place. Wouldn't you rather go with something as bit less mainstream? Like an Abdelkader or Helm? Just my $.02.
October 25th, 2011 at 11:19 AM ^
Absolutely. But you have to make sure they will be around a while. I went that route when I got an Ernie Sims jersey. I can't wear it anymore :(
Datsyuk is the type of player you can wear for the next 8 years he's under contract, and many years afterwards.

Played for Detroit for 11 years, then coached Detroit for 11 years. Won 3 Cups as a player, averaged nearly a point a game career for Detroit, won the Hart Trophy, coached the team to 4 Stanley Cup Finals.

How about Red Kelly, the first Norris winner? Still puzzled why Illitch won't allow his number to be retired.

Still puzzled why Illitch won't allow his number to be retired. But, Red sure haunted us playing center for the Leafs.

Alex Delvecchio or Cory Emmerton
October 25th, 2011 at 1:22 AM ^
Everytime I hear Delvecchio I think back to a red wings alum game I attended as a 9 year old at Vet's Arena in Ann Arbor... I waited patiently outside the lockerroom for autographs... at one point, the door swung open and in full view was Delvecchio and a few 60+ year old former wings struting around balls a draggin'. It was like a pre-internet lemonparty.

I prefer Ciccarelli. But for you, I would say get a Paul Ysebaert jersey.
