I saw during the Red Wings game last night that his father Steve assisted on Nick Lidstrom's first NHL goal. Looks like Mike's gotten off to a great start at Michigan.

We actually know how to play defense now! The Illini struggle against good defenses.
O$U: #14 scoring D, held them to 7 points
Paterno State Univ: #3 scoring D, held them to 7 points
We have the #10 scoring defense. I think we have a turnover or two that gives them a short field and they score more against us than they have against other top defenses. Our offense is probably most similar to the Northwestern one the Illini faced earlier this year. The Cats put up 35 points on the Illini.
Michigan 30, Illinois 17

[on the football field] "I want to be a pit in somebody's stomach."
Between Lewan and Molk we probably have the most quotable offensive line in all of college football.

One thing with Filppula is Babcock was planing to play him on the wing alongside Zetterberg this season. That was what happened when the Wings were 5-0 and he got off to a good start. During the losing streak Zetterberg was moved over to Datsyuk's line and everyone struggled. In the Anaheim game Babcock put Filppula, Zetterberg and Franzen on the same line once again and they had a strong game.
Filppula: 1a, +3
Franzen: 1g, 2a, +3
Zetterberg: 1g, +3
That's been Detroit's best line thus far.

I'm counting down the days until Bert and Hudler are gone. They're not good fits for what the Wings want to do.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Good points, the losses were||
Good points, the losses were pretty much 1 goal losses with the exception of Calgary and maybe one other game where the opponent scored an empty-netter. The Wings were competitive, they just were snakebitten.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||There was an EPIC FAIL moment||
There was an EPIC FAIL moment during the Calgary game when someone threw an octopus on the ice while the game was in progress. That's a no-no. And this early in the regular season? Let's save that for a more appropriate time people!
|3 years 47 weeks ago||I'm happy Babcok put the||
I'm happy Babcok put the Filppula-Zetterberg-Franzen line back together. They were great to start the season and when they got broken up during the winless streak they all seemed to suffer. So hopefully that line will stay intact for a little bit.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Wow, that's a lot of data||
Wow, that's a lot of data there. Thanks for taking the time to put it together. Mike Babcock is a guy who has very particular expectations and tells it like it is without much coachspeak. What he said prior to the win on Saturday was that the Wings are doing everything they need in order to be successful. They did start the year 5-0. He said they should keep doing what they've been doing - ie, grossly outshoot the opponent and put shots on net from areas where you're more likely to score (inside the circles).
So he seemed to think they just were not getting the bounces and he told the team not to panic and to keep doing what they've been doing. They did dominate the Ducks but Anaheim is a on a brutal road trip right now and they're not the imposing team they were back when they had Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer.
The biggest improvement by far has been their team defense, they are amongst the league leaders in fewest shots on goal allowed and Jimmy Howard has gotten off to a fine start. Ty Conklin had a terrible outing against the Caps and it remains to be seen if he'll be any better than he was in St. Louis.
Detroit does need another top 6 forward and they have a decent amount of cap space. So there's a chance they make a big trade along the lines of acquiring Chris Chelios way back when or Brendan Shanahan. More recent low-key trades have involved Brad Stuart and Todd Bertuzzi. If Detroit can get one really solid top 6 guy they will be in very good shape IMO.

Good points. A few replies.
3. We still don't have a running game outside of Denard, which is kind of problematic. Fitz looked like he was ready to take over that position during the Purdue game but he cannot stay healthy.
4. The plan all along has been to run Denard less, so I am not sure why people are expecting Denard to run 20+ times per game. Sure it happened early on to ease the transition but as we've seen with both Denard (last year) and Toussaint (his entire career) that B1G play is physical and guys can get beaten up going through the meat grinder of the schedule. Denard's improvements will come as a passer and his TD to Toussaint through the air was a good sign in this regard. He also made some nice throws on that final drive.
5. I wonder how much the offense misses a vertical threat like Stonum. Borges clearly wants to burn teams that stack the box and our WRs are getting one on one coverage, the problem is they have trouble getting any separation and the few times they do Denard and Devin seem to misfire. A big, fast receiver like Stonum would probably thrive on those types of routes. Hopefully he'll be good to go for next season.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||QB rating is probably more||
QB rating is probably more misleading in RR's spread 'n shred. In Al Borges' offense QB rating is much more likely to represent how a QB performed. Denard still throws too many INTs but in games like yesterday's our receivers certainly didn't help him out by dropping quite a few catchable passes.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||We're playing Nebraska at||
We're playing Nebraska at home. You may have noticed that playing at home gives decent teams a distinct advantage over playing on the road.
NWU: 1-2 (!)
Here's NU and O$U's road record thus far:
Not exactly murder's row.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||QB Rating for Denard this||
QB Rating for Denard this year:
He's had a few stinkers (SDSU, MSU, IOWA and EMU) but he's also had some very solid games. He also wasn't helped out much today with some drops and some interesting rules interpretations by the referees. The offense is evolving to become more of what Borges wants to run.

Stealing a philosophy espoused by Bobby Bowden and quoted in Three and Out.
1. You lose big first. Um, maybe that's true when you're building a progam. The University of Michigan football program doesn't need to be rebuilt, thank you very much.
2. You lose close. Yeah, that's where we are right now with tough road games. MSU and Iowa are a combined 12-0 at home. We were within 1 TD late in both games.
3. You win close. At home we definitely win close against decent teams like Notre Dame. We'll hopefully win against NU and O$U too.
4. You win big. We're not there just yet but it's the first year under Hoke.
So we're somewhere between 2-3. I don't see us losing big anytime soon and we are starting to win big against the lightweights (WMU, EMU, SDSU, MINN, NWU, PU).
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Well it's Hoke's first year||
Well it's Hoke's first year so I don't think "acceptable" really enters the conversation. It's more what do you expect going forward based on what you know right now?
I don't see us losing to Illinois as Zooker is just not good and their offense struggles against good defenses. We have one of those this year! I don't see us losing to a Nebraska team that just lost to Northwestern. O$U plays good enough defense to slow down our offense but IU just put up 20 on them in the Shoe, while the Huskers put up 34 on them on the road.
We can easily win all three games. We may not, but the schedule does work out reasonably well with Illinois on the road and NU and O$U at home. I feel pretty good about us winning 9 games this season. Is that acceptable? I sure think so but I'd prefer 10. I'm just greedy like that.

Jack Miller: No David, at that point you need to put your right foot in and then you put it back out. Then - and this is key - you put it back in and shake it all about. That right there is what the Hokey Pokey is all about.

Good point, Campbell just got shipped out and I have no idea about the situation with the team he's going to play for. It's probably not what he was expecting though when he decided to go the OHL route. At least Di Giuseppe is guaranteed to play for Michigan so long as he's all in for doing the college thing.

This is awesome. It allows Versus to further brand itself as a hockey channel and it means I can see a few more Meeechigan hockey games. I hope it's successful and they quickly expand the schedule of college hockey games they carry.
|3 years 48 weeks ago||Yeah, Martin looks turrible.||
Yeah, Martin looks turrible. He tried to make Rich Rod keep all of Carr's assistants. Mary Sue was like "yeah, you can't make him do that." As great as Martin was with the facilities and balance sheet he was that freaking bad with the coaching hire.
|3 years 48 weeks ago||Well Devin should provide him||
Well Devin should provide him with at least a redshirt season so he probably wouldn't compete for the starter's role until the 2014 season when in theory he could be a redshirt Freshman. The bottom line is we aren't going to deal with the Sheridan? or Threet? QB armageddon for a very long time, if ever. I vote ever.
|3 years 48 weeks ago||At this point all you can||
At this point all you can hope for is they get drafted by organizations that will not pressure them to leave college before their sophomore or junior seasons. We'll just have to wait and see how that works out.

The most important thing with this first real class for Hoke is filling it up with linemen on both sides of the ball. It's not as sexy as bringing in a bunch of skill guys but it paves the way for future dominance. Then the Shane Morris class the following year might be the one that gets you a bunch of hyped up skill players. Hoke is definitely going about things the right way, the key right now is finishing strong on the field. Win 9+ games and the recruiting momentum should only add to our already impressive recruiting class.

Ya gotta love Dusty. He was the first person RR called after talking with Michigan. Dusty didn't believe him at first. Here is Dusty's response:
"Now, don't be messing with me, Rich. This is my mecca you're talking about! Let me just tell you this: Everything about Michigan is first-class."
Awesome but also really sad given how everything played out.

Not sure about Stanford's o-line situation but we'll obviously have lots of playing time available over the next few years. I'd be a bit leery about him coming here strictly because his dad is a fan. Hopefully he digs the Funk and if he decides to come here it will be solely due to what he feels is his own best interest.
