Perhaps if they re-did the "GO BLUE" to match the new font the whole ensemble would look much better.
I'm not a fan of using fonts that feature M's with non-parallel line segments in athletic applications. Looks like it belongs on Broadway instead of at a stadium.
Huh, can't say that I thought about it that way. I am guessing your day job involves design in some shape or form (pun intended).
Well, I do have a degree in graphic arts and I'm also married to a graphic designer. We're always nitpicking design choices that corporations make when it comes to their graphics, signage, logos, etc. It's just something we do...

I'd like to learn more about the non-parallel line segments (I still dont quite see them), including why they bother us humans (something evolutionary maybe). But this is perhaps not the place or time. Anyway, I always envy someone who has in some way incorporated art into their career.

If you look at the vertical columns in a traditional Block 'M' ...
...you'll notice that they are exactly parallel to each other.
Now take a look at the vertical columns in this uppercase 'M', which is similiar to the one used on the signs in the tunnel...
...you should notice that they are splayed, or that they flare out at the bottom.
With regard to the psychology behind it all, unfortunately my degree was more focused on the production aspect of art than the components of its design. There is a certain science behind what colors to use, what type of fonts to use, and how to arrange it all on a page so that it evokes a certain response or feeling in the viewer. While I think I have a pretty good "feel" for it, I didn't take enough typography classes to truly understand this science of design. I know just enough to be dangerous.
As for incorporating art into my career, well, yeah, that didn't work out so well ... I'm an elementary school teacher now. I will admit, however, that the kids are constantly amazed by the displays, posters, diagrams, etc. that I am able to produce! :)

Very interesting. I now see what you were referring to - the top M looks stately and imposing, while the bottom looks somewhat doltish, or childlike. The bottom also interestingly looks like it could be from a horror movie, somewhat scary clown - ish.
Thanks for the education
I'd prefer the new lettering match the GO BLUE, but oh well

The font used is OPTIMA if anyone cares to recreate this in their own home...going down the stairs...like I may or may not plan on doing.

FWIW, that's the same font the Estee Lauder cosmetics company uses it in their branding.
I think it's great. The more it looks like it was drawn on there by some players in the '80s the better. As precise as everything has gotten, a more organic look is refreshing, especially for something like this that is meant to inspire. What would be terrible is if it's all done up like a successories poster. I would even lose the yellow border.
Nothing about that font choice says "drawn on there by some players in the '80's" but that's probably just me.

Brady Hoke questions the toughness of this comment..
Looks Great!
SOOOOOOOOOO GLAD This was fixed in time for the opener.
Awesome. I like it.

Love it. Really cool.

F'n EPIC!

I really like it. New paint job to start the new era of Michigan football under Coach Hoke.

If there's one thing I take away from this thread, it's the fact that I wish the "ALL IN!" catchphrase would be taken out to pasture and put out of its misery.
If there's two things I take away from this thread, it's that I rather like the new tunnel motif.

Personally, I never much cared for that "Hard Edge" nonsense. And I say that as the hardest-edge Rodriguez supporter this side of the Detroit Free Press. I'm glad it's gone from the tunnel.
And "The Team, the Team, the Team," has real history and real Michigan meaning behind it. You of all people don't need that reminder from me. So that's all good.
"ALL IN" is not going away; if only for the reason that it is so emblematic of what was wrong with Michigan (not Rodriguez) when Rodriguez was here. We weren't All In, and that was Michigan's fault. it ought to be a reminder; a cautionary tale.

"all in" really is the litmus test for the whole Michigan community while RR was here. You hit the nail on the head.

From today's MGoBlog home page. Thank you, Tim:
The first thing Denard said to Brady was "Coach, I'm all-in."

I agree about the "all in" phrase it bugs me. It just feels like its trying to bring in poker players or something.
That said I love the new tunnel paint job.

Something tells me this was more Brandon than Hoke, but I could be wrong. Either way I love it. Much better than Hard Edge. Is Hold the Rope in the locker room gone as well.

Neighbor is great friends with the dad of a recruit who was there Sunday. Apparently as mentioned with the tunnel art, there are frick'n clocks everywhere in the locker rooms counting down various opponents.

..& this just seems perfect. My initial reaction was, why did it take so long to do this?
Does anyone have a pic of the Rose Bowl door? (it too is beautiful in my mind)

I think I just had a Michi-gasm.

I got to say this is SO much better than Hard Edge.
But, I still want them to move that huge PVC pipe that was installed after the stadium expansion. It is blocking the GO BLUE.

Do we have confirmation that this is real...?

Ann Arbor.com just posted an article about it, which leads you to a pic (sorry don't know how to embed): http://twitpic.com/5zvgaa
This is great, a great tone to set every game!
In comparing it to the old photo, it looks like the 'GO BLUE' may have been repainted as well. I know this picture is from a slightly different perspective, but the 'O' seems a little wider in the old one, plus you can barely see the 'G'...
Perfect.
