Mattison expecting a lot from Campell

Submitted by IncrediblySTIFF on

This from ESPN's B1G Blogger Adam Rittenberg about Greg Mattison's expectations and interactions with underperforming Will Campell.

One interesting thing about Mattison's ability to motivate by calling out.

"He's talking right to Will. Even during condition, he would call him out and say, 'We need you. We need a 3-technique. If you can't do it, you just let me know. No hard feelings.'"

Here's hoping that Mattison can put that spark into Will, IMO this will be his final legitamte chance to live up to the hype that he came in with.  Thoughts?

Edit:fixed my title.

He's big and has some big time experience under his belt now.  He's also had some time to reflect on last season and the challenge in front of him.  He's getting some top notch coaching for a change and if I was going to predict a "most improved" player for the 2011 season, It would be my man Will.  Let's revisit this prediction in December!!!  Go Blue!!!

Think this guy could've played in Rich Rod's defense?

Not a chance in hell. But because his Offense controlled the ball and controlled the clock. It allowed him to have a huge impact on Bama's National Title winning defense.

The first time I saw that picture I thought it was Jennifer Hudson before she lost all of her weight. I was all like, hey where is the NSFW tag?

While Will still has time to prove everyone wrong, he certainly has been a bust. I KNOW having Mike Martin in front of you is a problem, but come on, I expected more by this point from Will. If he were THAT good coming out of high school, he could have seen a little bit more playing time. Maybe it was just RR who didn't like bigger guys and hopefully Mattison gives Will more time, but I don't know. He is going to HAVE to step up if he's going to be the guy in 2012 when Mike Martin is gone.

Man, I really hope Campbell isn't the type of kid who buckles under pressure, because he has a lot of pressure on him this season. When the entire fan base thinks you haven't lived up to your potential, NFL players are calling you out by name, and the coaching staff is putting all of its 3-tech eggs in your basket, that's pressure.

The "entire fan base" doesn't think Campbell hasn't lived up to his potential. Hopefully those members of the "entire fan base" who understand the importance of coaching, weight loss and gain, and the difficulty in playing defensive tackle will do what they're supposed to do, and let this guy get on with the business of playing football without whining about THEIR expectations on Campbell. That's just unfair.

I have the utmost confidence and faith in BH and GM to mentor Will to greatness.

You can tell Brady really cares about "his kids".  When you hear him coach he corrects and then encourages at the same time.  And MM said BH is continually pulling them aside and drilling, drilling, drilling proper technique into them.  They're demanding perfection and excellence on every rep.

Gotta luv that.

Will's going to finish strong, have great junior and senior years, and it's going to be because of the stellar coaching of BH and GM.

WC is now in the right position (DT).  He has great coaches.  The starting spot is his to lose.  The team badly needs him to have a breakout year.  I'm hopeful he's going to have a very good year.  He's certainly one of the pivotal players for Michigan this year.  In order for us to have a good year wins-wise, our defense needs to improve quite a bit.  And it starts with the play of the D-line.

in the last staff beginning to slip.

He was a 5 star. Either the entire recruitosphere is totally wacked or there were issues. Man among boy syndrome, check, poor pad level, yeah, needs motivation, got it. Coaches? Coach? Bueller?

While I can still accept that some things are not meant to be, BWC is one of the canaries in the mine as far as I am concerned. If he comes out and is up to acceptable, I will take it to mean that some of the little things still matter. If he comes out and performs at a higher level, I predict a few happy dances around here.

Having expectations that any player on the defensive line will do anything productive so early in his career is kind of ridiculous.  Gabe Watson was just as hyped coming out of high school and at the same point in his career he had made just as many TFL as Campbell.  One.  The next two years he was an all conference performer with the exact same coaching staff.  It takes time for these guys to develop.

....Michigan Daily version of the story by Stephen J. Nesbitt.

“(Defensive coordinator Greg) Mattison stressed when he got here that if we don’t have a three-tech that can step up, we’re not going to be able to run the defense. If we can’t run it well, we’re not going to run it. He put the burden right on …. Big Will and pretty much said, ‘You gotta do what you gotta do,’ “ Martin said. “Will has really stepped up and answered the call. His work ethic is as high as I’ve seen it, and he’s got his mind right.”

Campbell becomes the defensive tackle tasked with breaking down the line of scrimmage with his big body and eliminating the risk of double teams on his linemate Martin, something the All-Big Ten nose tackle can appreciate.

“It makes it easier on us, because they can’t double everyone,” Martin said. “Someone’s going to have a one-on-one, when the pass comes around. Someone’s going to be free and has to get to the ball.  When you’ve got guys getting to the ball, it’s like, ‘Who you gonna block?’ ” Martin said.

I expect these coaches will get as much as anyone can out of Campbell and I think he will play well.  In fairness to him though it may just be that he doesn't have the temperament of a dominating defensive linman - and that is not a character flaw - it doesn't mean he is lazy or not trying - it is who he is.  He was an overwhelming physical force at the high school level and that doesn't necessarily translate to dominance at the next level where more is required.

This is a case where the right coaching might really get him going.  I really, really wish he would have redshirted, regardless of what our defensive depth was in 09.
