Who will wear #98?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

I say Dennis Norfleet.

Why? He's elusive. He's a dynamic return threat and a weapon.

Tom Harmon was just that. He had no true genuine position. He played all over the place.

Also, Dennis Norfleet isn't already established with a set jersey # like Fitz or someone like that. He's had #26 and now #23.

Dileo...since all they need to do is stitch on a 8.

It's about time that #77 becomes a legends number.

I have a feeling it will be Gardner.

Does he really have a true # identity?

He wore #7 for two years, #12 last year and in the opener.

He'd have it for two years which would at least create less headaches. This probably means nothing, but there are #98 jerseys for sale on the MDen site. adidas ones. Usually the jerseys they sell are a QB and another star. No #47 for Jake Ryan (sadly).

I'm still of the mindset that I don't think there's anyone on the team worthy of wearing Harmon's number. I don't know if there ever could be. No disrespect to the team and the talent each man on it possesses, but this one just feels a little iffy. Harmon was a god amongst mere mortals. But we've already given out everyone else's number, so I guess why not with Harmon at this point.

But if I had to pick someone, Norfleet would make sense from the standpoint that he plays a lot of different positions, and he's a threat to take it to the house each time he touches the ball.

My money is on Frank Clark getting the 98 jersey. I base this on all the preseason hype from players and coaches about his abilities, and he is also an end, it makes sense to me.... I also think that  Hoke would bestow such an honor on one of his defensive linemen.

I really don't understand why they couldn't just stick a 98 with a Harmon underneath it on the facade of one of the two structures. Do the same for every other "special" number. Have a special game every year, call it the "LEGENDS GAME" where the numbers are worn by players who embody each legend. Dave Brandon could have field day with this. Make the Legends game against a bad opponent so you can draw some attention to a game that might seem boring? Special limited edition program$$, concession cup$$$.

What we are doing now just seems to have too many issues.

I'm in the "don't care for it" camp.  I'd like to see them shelve this, and I think it becomes more difficult to do so the longer it continues.  A "legends game" would be a convenient, face-saving event that this current legends tradition-in-the-making could morph into.  Keep it to a one week thing.  This lets our future legends establish their own identity (number) and still honors the legends - which I have nothing against.

How are people poorly-informed?  Most people appear to have a pretty good handle on the topic as it's not very complicated. It kinda seems like you just used that description to make yourself sound superior to other posters.

In fact, the majority of your posts make it clear that you just enjoy being arrogant and condescending towards others.  Let's take a look at some of your recent comments. I get that you have been here for a while, as have I, but there really is no need to be such a dick to everyone here. These are all from the last week:

"Maybe you can work off some of this excess useless energy by beating up these straw men of yours. Seriously, when you blink your eyes, do your knuckles crack?"

"You should take away the 0 yard runs where the line busted if you're going to do shit like this."

"Both for the pointless nature of this thread, and for all the evidently blind people who still think Smith is superior."

"If you think any of those numbers concerning the state of the student section the past coulple of years are in any way accurate, you need a few math courses."

"But i was referring to that concept in the context of this board. Furthermore, bitching that unpopuar opinions get voted down is small-minded crap that makes me haul out the world's smallest violin."

"There's lately been a glut of stupid shit posted on board threads.

Typically, the ones who whine the loudest about mythical "groupthink" or "hivemind" are the ones responsible for posting said stupid shit."

"I have never understood why the whole redshirt thing is so hard to understand."

"For all the whining, the change certainly did its job."

"But tell the douchenozzles who bring him up, who are ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS the haterz."

"Are you at least getting a workout beating up that straw man? There's this thing called "precedent." If you're here to troll, leave.."

"No one has ever said anything to the contrary of that last sentence in the history of this board, as far as I'm aware. Enjoy beating up your straw men."

"If you're going to intentionally misread my comment and say something that ass-backwards, there's really no point in elaborating."

"It's intriguing how you can be douchey without even trying."

"The complaints are stockpiling even higher now. Need a napkin for that egg on your face? Watch someone complain so hard the thread gets locked."

"You're wrong about everything in this thread, and I see that as a good thing."

"Ban yourself."

I'm not sure you of all people should be lecturing anyone about board behavior.

Most of those comments are in response to or concerning the same group of users. I feel they're jerks, dishonest, or just dumb. Negs don't exist for now, so instead, calling them out seems to be another approach.

I feel like the whole obnoxious Uniformz thing of that last 2 years has suddenly morphed into the Numberz theme going on right now. It might be special if it happens once every other year but right now it's just overkill.

And, see, there's the problem: Harmon was a skill position player. Putting #98 on, say, an OL or a DE in no way honors the kind of player Harmon was. Yet at the same time, putting #98 on a guy like Drew Dileo just looks strange.

So what do you do?

Why couldn't we have just left things the way they were, expanded the retired numbers with "honored jerseys" (like basketball does), which would still be handed out, and display the numbers in a more prominent place and publicize them so that people who didn't know about these players would have a better opportunity to do so?

Frankly, I didn't think it was that difficult to learn about the retired numbers before (I learned about them just fine when I was a kid, before the internet!), but apparently people needed a reminder. And a gaudy patch is the best way to do it?

I hate these legends numbers. A couple of them were cool and well deserved, but now it just completely seems like it's being forced. Too many number changes and shuffling, it's just not as special as it was for the first two.

I do like the idea of the legends jersey, but agree the constant number shuffling is getting hard to follow. That's why I'm hoping it's an underclassman so they can take ownership of the number. For me, Jake Ryan is now best identified as #47, whereas Gallon will always be #10. Same goes for Roundtree, who will always be best identified as #12 to me at least.

I saw one poster mention Cam Gordon, but seriously can't believe more people haven't chosen him to wear #98. Is there a better "Michigan Man" that comes in to the program as a wide receiver, gets moved to safety, and perserveres and busts his tail in the off season (knowing he'd be Jake Ryan's back up) only to turn into a freak of a SAM in game #1 vs CMU? Yes, I'm aware it's Central Michigan, but of all the seniors on the team, Cam defines Michigan football.
