Who's Going To Be Our Starting QB This Season? It Really Doesn't Matter

Submitted by Wood_Chuckson on

Saw this on 247 and really couldn't agree more. I've been busy this off-season conversing with fellow fans and giving my reasoning behind why I think one QB will start over the next. This article just put into perspective something I think we all really know. It won't matter who starts this season because whoever starts is going to ball out. Couple that with the fact they're pushing each other as hard as they are. For the first time in a long time, I'll feel comfortable with whoever will be the backup.

The guy is batting 1.000 at producing quarterbacks. He's never missed.

In his first role as a full-time coach, he helped Rich Gannon put together the best run of his NFL career on his way to Super Bowl XXXVII and the 2002 AP NFL MVP Award.

He moved on from there to his first head coaching gig, taking over at FCS San Diego in 2004. That's not a program that regularly spits out NFL football players. But Harbaugh spit out two.

First he helped BYU transfer Todd Mortensen become a free agent for the Lions and Patriots. He had a little longer to work with his second quarterback project. After a couple of years with Harbaugh, San Diego's Joshua Johnson went on to be drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft and has kicked around NFL rosters for the past eight seasons.

It's true. Harbaugh's track record is too good to worry about who starts. They will have a high floor at a minimum. That paired with our defense will win us a lot of games.

This is like Shane Morris all over again in terms of how sure people were that he'd grab the job from one of our older guys. Peters could win the job, although it's unlikely, but some of you act like you're Nostradamus.

I remember when he looked at the cameras and said that Jake Rudock was a NFL caliber player.  This is the same Jake Rudockwho was benched at Iowa and told not to come back and was having a rough first couple games.  We all chuckled thinking coach was just trying to give him confidence.   Even Brian chuckled about it in a writeup.  Look who was drafted to the LIons and IS an NFL caliber QB.  Harbuagh knows football, but he knows QB most of all and who ever trains under him for any length of time will be good.

To be fair, it was Jake Ruddock who was benched at Iowa. He had some rough times here as well. Jake Rudock was the guy Harbaugh sent to the NFL. You say flashes of him even in the Utah game, when he led a flawless two minute drill.

Whoever starts at QB should be just fine. As stated above, Jim has an excellent track record with qb's. That being said, I do feel that the QB play will make or break this season for us... With a top flight D, all we need is a competent offense to succeed. We don't necessarily need a Heisman caliber guy - just someone who doesn't turn the ball over every 3 series.

This battle for the starting spot is going to be good....love to see them trying to get any advantage they can.  It seems safe to bet that they will push even harder as we get closer to kick-off, which should be an absolute blast to watch unfold.

Okay that's all and well but the stop that matters most is Stanford. It's the only P5 program he's ever coached besides here. And it's not like he produced anyone of note there

I'm guessing that Harbaugh is playing mind games with him. I may be way off but O'Korn is an extremely confident guy, which is good, but maybe Harbaugh just wants to make sure he doesn't lose his edge and keeps battling. Rudock's problem when he came from Iowa was a lack of confidence, and once he won the job Harbaugh never backed down and stood by him, kept boosting him up as The Guy. In other words, Rudock needed his confidence reinforced and that's what Harbaugh did. It obviously paid off for him.

that Harbaugh wants to start.

But if there were an MGoPool on the starting QB, I agree, I'd go with O'Korn.  (Guessing the starter/pontificating about it is perfectly fine preseason entertainment for we fans.  But that's about it.)

but whomever the next 2 guys are, they will get some playing time in the first 3 games if the games are the routs we think they will be.

So we'll get a chance to see who can do what early enough in the season.

It matters a great deal. Sub-par QB play cost them two of their three losses last season. If they'd had good Rudock at the time, the MSU game wouldn't have been close. They're going to be a good team, no matter what, but the QB will need to be excellent for them to reach their highest goals. That's no guarantee.

I really admire Gardner for battling so hard. He showed us all flashes of what he could be (the record books prove that much), but shitty game planning and shitty OL coaching left him shell shocked. But man, those 5 games in 2012 when he was balling hardcore were awesome.

I wish a senior Devin Gardner had played under a RichRod system, that would have been AMAZING!! However, I would not want to be anywhere in the program's history as right now, because I think these next ten to twelve years (hoping to be next 20!!) is going to be some of the best of ALL times!!!! I just wanted to say that Devin Gardner on a full RichRod team could have been amazing!

Hey there, ND Sux,

There's no need for "ducks"

We must pity poor Borges

Because although he was gorgeous

He didn't have Harbaugh's QB mux*

What is this mux I speak of?

It's simple you see

4 players go in

and out pops a QB

A QB so talented and bright

above his head shines a light

Because the output of the QB mux

will remind you of the Lucks

His passing will be out-of-sight

*a "mux" is a common nickname for a multiplexer, used in microelectronics. A mux selects from among multiple inputs and provides one output depending on the setting.
