You fell for the article's bait and switch--he was planning to go to the Dolphins in an advisory, not player, role. And moved on when it was clear that the optics would be problematic in the wake of Flores' lawsuit.

Nailed it.   The OP, like most of main stream media these days unfortunately, was far more concernced about being first than being accurate.  I would bet absolutely everything that he never read the article - just saw the headline, knew it would hit the board relatively quickly and wanted to beat others to the post.

The irony is in his rush to be first he's now got to sit and take the points beating because our MgoOverlord betters dont think we can be trusted with an edit feature on sidebar posts.  In the olden days of yore he could simply go back and add the words "to the front office" to his title and all would be well in the world.

Sadly, for the OP, you really do have to "measure twice to cut once" when creating a thread.  Even if it means someone else might get all the MgoGlory of being first.

That's a bad take.  All I did is posted the article's actual headline with the link and a quick comment that Ross wanted to get both on his team. That's it.

Then at the very least, you were extremely lazy about the post and lack of context. Even your follow-up response which I quoted above - "Ross wanted to get both on his team" (emphasis mine) - suggests that he wanted Brady as a Dolphin player.

Not necessarily true. Read the Boston Globe story that the Yahoo story cites. The BG story is more in depth. It says it was likely that Brady would try to play for the Dolphins. From the article:

"This doesn’t mean Brady was done playing football. After all, he just finished second in MVP voting and led the NFL in passing yards and touchdown passes.

The Dolphins’ offer was just Brady’s way of getting out of Tampa. He was under contract with the Buccaneers as a player, but they couldn’t stop him from becoming an executive. Once Brady was in Miami, and once the Buccaneers had found a replacement at quarterback, the Dolphins could have approached the Bucs about trade compensation to let Brady come out of retirement and play quarterback."

think he was only going to be heading to Miami in a front office role, not as a player.

I suppose I could be wrong, but I doubt Brady would've wanted to start playing for an entirely new team, learning new schemes and going to a less talented team at age 45. He can go back to Tampa because he already knows the schemes in place, he's been playing with these guys for two full seasons and has the chemistry, and Tampa has a lot more overall talent right now than Miami does, even with the addition of Tyreek Hill.

Tampa also plays in the NFC which is a much weaker conference, and the NFC South is likely going to be the weakest division in the league next season. Atlanta is a talentless trash heap right now and could legitimately be the worst or second worst team in the league next season, Carolina is maybe a step above that, and New Orleans has talent on defense but they have no QB. Kamara is their only weapon right now. Does a 45 year old Tom Brady want to have to go through Josh Allen in Buffalo and two annual grudge matches with Belichek just to win his division, and then go through Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, Jackson or Watson to get to another Super Bowl? Doubt it. He'll take his chances against Rodgers, Prescott, Murray or Stafford.

TL;DR, Tampa is far more equipped, from both a personnel and external circumstances viewpoint, to win a Super Bowl right now than Miami is. Brady can't have more than a year or two left in him, so he's going to maximize this window.

Wasn't he under contract with the Bucs through 2022?  How could he just fake retire and go play for Miami?  I don't understand how playing was even an option.

After reading the first few comments, now I don't even want to read the article. Fool me once, dickdastardly...

Here's one instance where it's good that the OP isn't able to edit his post. If you decide to go streaking at an MLB game then get on the field and have regrets, there's no option to pull out a robe and put it on. You're there for the whole world to see, in all your glory.

The Boston Globe article that this Yahoo post is based on.

In the Boston Globe article, there is a speculation that the arrangement for Brady to Miami would have been a player/front office role.
With Miami waiting until Tampa replaced Brady before approaching with a trade scenario, which would allow Tom to play in Miami..

I read that whole article yesterday and there was some major speculative leaps in there that were kind of presented in a way that the author wanted people to take them as facts… which of course Twitter did and now we have other articles being written claiming these leaps as facts. It’s a perfect representation of how “news” works these days.

Strangely, the same thing just happened with Juwan Howard: one writer speculated the Lakers could be interested, it gets passed around Twitter, then a bunch of “verified” Twitter users start mentioning it as fact, and then articles get written quoting the “verified” users saying that the Lakers are interested in Howard. All of it based on pure speculation.
