It's funny, reading that in the book, the first thing that came to mind was "This chapter is tailor-made as a newspaper feature." Really fantastic piece of writing by Mr. Bacon here.

"Next up, a one-hour meeting with a professor to discuss a paper. "I like writing papers," Robinson told me. "I don't like tests."
more evidence to the early game over excitement meme?

First half (hour):
Denard is rushing his answers.... Penmanship mechanics are poor (-1).... Picked up bonus points improvising on question 3, then gave it all back with a shoddy response on question 5....
Second half (hour):
Robinson simply nailing the responses now.... threads an answer into the zone (+2).... Decision-making is 180 degrees from earlier... Question 24 tried to trip him up, but Denard sidestepped the potential trap and scored easily....

Very interesting to see a more personal look at Denard and even see that we might have something in common.

I really felt a kinship with him reading that he too gets slipped little notes from unfamiliar girls.

Lucky. It was just the Wendy's #6 combo for me.

Besides the #6, I also prefer papers over exams.

Awesome. Must buy-read!

I could think of while reading this was how proud Denard's parents must be of him. I'm not much older than he, and I feel an overwhelming sense of pride just to have him as a member of our team. Just imaging the smiles on his parent's faces to know they raised him to be an amazingly humble and kind human being lifts my spirits.

"Then he hopped into his roommate Devin Gardner's family pickup truck, a beat-up 2002 Dakota."

I have an excerpt from "There is Indisputable Evidence: Jim Tressel and the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Crucible of the Infractions Committee"
"The Buckeye players got up at 11:00 am and headed out to their 2011 BMW on their way to the tattoo parlor."

Mike Martin drives an incredibly crappy car. If my memory serves correctly, it's a late-90s green sedan with like half of the front bumper and quarterpanel ripped off. On the one hand it's a bummer to see, but it's also quite comforting to see star players driving terrible cars.

Does it look like...

considering what he will be driving in a few months.

Yeah, it looks like a beat up Taurus or something.

Wonder if Hoke made him throw out his red polo shirt
October 14th, 2011 at 8:21 AM ^
Denard apparently does not "get it."
October 14th, 2011 at 1:18 AM ^
"At 10:34 p.m., they finally walked out of Schembechler Hall for the last time that day—to be met by middle-aged autograph seekers."
And I'll bet you Denard still had a smile on his face for them. The kid's a gem.

Nice job by the WSJ to run this, but the picture they chose needs more Lloyd Brady.

Wendy's #6 is now my favorite meal.

14,000 Calories for lineman. Good lord.

Why was Denard wearing a RED polo?

Deerfield Beach High School's colors are Scarlet & Gold.
And, fwiw, they're known as the "Bucks"

It's weird to read that Gardner, a true freshman, was living off-campus. I'm glad we're not allowing that anymore.
This also caught my eye:
Like most teams today, Michigan hits only on TuesdaysI could be wrong, but I think a lot of schools go in full pads on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

So.... did he ever text the girl?
October 14th, 2011 at 2:47 PM ^
but I think they will put it into the screenplay adaptation.
