There IS...
...DAY until Anthony Carter (Human Torpedo 1979-1982) sees Michigan work hard to define elusiveness in 2019, especially when big games are on the line.

GO BLUE!!

Watching all these bug-eyed, noodly-armed, off-target QBs has made me appreciate Patterson so, so much more.
I'm so ready.

Only one video to use today...

Thanks Sap as always. Nothing could possibly give you more chills. The best call ever.
I can't believe we can say Michigan Football is tomorrow! In 24 hours, Zack Novak day will hit, and I will post that final "There are..." with a must-watch video attached to it. If I have the time to assemble it, I will also release a full list of this year and last year's "There are..." featured players, upon requests by many of you guys.

I was in the end zone (the south end zone?) at age 10 when that play occurred. We had sat through rain, cold, dudes putting out their cigarette butts on our rain gear (really), my dad threatening to break the necks of said cigarette putter-outers (really), a lackluster performance of M against an overmatched IU team, and the prospect of no overtime in 1979.
And then... Wangler to Carter.

My first year with season tickets - six years old. I didn’t know they weren’t all this exciting.

That play rips my heart out! I had to be back home at a set time. Had to leave the stadium before the crowd disbursed. So I ran the 3/4s of a mile or so, got in my car to hear that play on the radio. To this day my sports friends tease me without pity. Could have been there to watch that live! Dumb, dumb, dumb.
August 30th, 2019 at 10:33 AM ^
Anthony Carter was the most amazing/electrifying player ever at UM.
At the end of his four years, he held every receiving record, most touchdowns and return records.
Also the NCAA record with 17.4 yards per play!!!
GO BLUE ???

Braylon is NOT the baseline for #1! While I may understand the emphasis that Braylon put on "earning" it, nobody here will forget the reason why he did so.
We are AC day(s) away from beating MTSU

August 30th, 2019 at 9:31 AM ^
I'm in the same boat as you. I love Anthony Carter and his legacy, but I grew up watching The Braylon Show against MSU and losing my mind when it happened. All #1s are #1 in our hearts.
August 30th, 2019 at 1:14 AM ^
There would be no Braylon without AC.

This is an incorrect take.

It's like you want people to dislike you.

12:28 a.m. UM Fan from Sydney: "I like Braylon."
Board reaction: "You're the worst fan ever! Neg neg neg!"
12:30 a.m. MgoCincy Blue: "I like Braylon."
Board reaction: "That's cool. +4"
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
August 30th, 2019 at 7:27 AM ^
Context is everything. Sydney was dumping on AC with his post placement, tone, and lack of explanation about what/why he was saying this. Cincy explained why, and had better form in saying it.
August 30th, 2019 at 7:32 AM ^
WTF? How am I dumping on Anthony? All I said was I am too young to have seen Anthony play. That is my explanation, which is clearly stated in my post. I was born in 1981, which, if my math is correct, means I watched Braylon play.
August 30th, 2019 at 7:56 AM ^
Joke's on you anyway. The correct answer is: David Terrell.

Kekoa Crawford, the real #1.
August 30th, 2019 at 10:53 AM ^
AMBRY THOMAS #1
(Actually, the correct answer is AC, but I like seeing "THOMAS 1" on a jersey. And now you know what the T ins ST3 stands for.)
August 30th, 2019 at 8:12 AM ^
I guess screw anyone who wasn't born in the 50's. Pretty hard to relate to any player that you never saw play.

August 30th, 2019 at 12:30 AM ^
As a young Michigan fan. I understood the #1 more with Braylon. His game against MSU is still one of the best memories I have of that jersey number.
August 30th, 2019 at 12:38 AM ^
Me too. The secret is I don't use him here to use him two other times across the countdown - when we're one month and when we're one week away.
Also, although Braylon gives me nostalgia and he was fantastic in BraylonFest, it doesn't come close to the moment that John Wangler to Anthony Carter has become. AC deserves to get that play up there on football eve every year.
August 30th, 2019 at 12:45 AM ^
I won’t disagree. My father told me stories of AC. 1 out of 4 catches were touchdowns. That’s unheard of. This number means so much to kids across each generation.
These traditions are what makes Michigan different. The moments and numbers. We all can see a jersey number and think of a Michigan moment. This is why no one else compares to the maize and blue.
August 30th, 2019 at 11:24 AM ^
I was 14 for the Braylonfest game against MSU so for me, he's who I think of when I see the #1 jersey. My "coolstorybro" regarding that:
It was trick-or-treat night in my neighborhood and I was out with my friends...I wanted to catch parts of the game somehow but being 14, definitely didn't put a priority on it. I was cutting through a backyard to get to a different street, and noticed that the people whose yard I was going through had the game on in their living room. I stood in their back window (with a Michael Myers costume on of all things) for 5 solid minutes watching the game play out, culminating in Braylon's third TD to (eventually) win the game in OT. Later that night, I also touched my first boob in the basement of my girlfriends house so all in all, a super solid night for a 14 year old Michigan fan growing up in Ohio.
Simpler times, man.

Season Tee of The Day: 2018
The Air Jordan designs went from charmingly simple to simple in a bland way. Although I love the phrase on the front, there just really isn't that much character to it to make it memorable.

I do want to take this opportunity under the one and only "There IS..." post to ask you guys for your feedback on the "There are..." experience this year.
Anything you like/didn't like? Any fun twists you want to suggest for future countdowns?

These are absolutely great. Only thing I can think of is maybe an honorable mention for others that wore the number. But the comments usually take care of that.

Love what you do. No suggestions from me. I enjoyed each one immensely. Thanks.
August 30th, 2019 at 4:57 AM ^
You are doing the Lord's work hope to see some 2019 numbers weaved in there next season!
August 30th, 2019 at 6:22 AM ^
Great job, JWG! It's not easy keeping up with this kind of thing, and you made it (almost) all the way through! By the time you missed one, everyone else was ready to jump in and keep it going because of your determination to force it down our throats for 8 months! LOL!!!
Thanks, man!!!
August 30th, 2019 at 7:48 AM ^
Thanks JWG - I imagine there's few posters who would be able to follow through on such a long daily countdown. Really appreciate the effort and consistency.
August 30th, 2019 at 9:24 AM ^
I know there are a few board posters who complain about this feature, particularly early in the countdown, because they can't stand the anticipation, but I love what you do for us JWG. I look forward to the 'There Are 99 days...' post each year, yet am always pleasantly surprised when it appears.
I appreciate the historical references to players from the 40's through 60's that most of us never saw, and many of us never heard of, and the links you include so that we can go learn more when (if) we have the time.
I am not a morning caffeine drinker, but when you have these posts to give a shot of adrenalin first thing in the morning, who needs coffee?

I was extremely disappointed that two days left wasn’t Vincent smith. He’s the best player to ever wear that number at Michigan. Not even a mention smh
