Texas inability of keeping talent in-state is a problem.

Submitted by bleed blue 1 on June 30th, 2021 at 4:53 PM

Out of the Ten highest rated players in the state of Texas they only have 3 . When you narrow that to the top 5 they only have one . And Lastly they have zero in the top 3 with our rival having the top 2. Incompetence at getting a actual head coach has created a pipeline from Texas to O$U with us having to face the brunt of the consequence. The same can be said for USC and the Cali pipeline they got going . Thats why I'm hoping the coaching hires actually turn out well for them even though it probably won't based on past history.

Texas, or more specific the Longhorns (UT), is probably the only football program that is more disappointing year in and year out recently than us. Any year that program, with that recruiting base,  cannot win 9-10 games should be replaced period.

TAMU jumping into the SEC was/is a really big issue for UT - I fully expect the Aggies to be the flagship Texas program for the next decade.  They most definitely should have been in the playoff over ND last year.

Biased tho - gig ‘em.   And setting aside UT and TAMU, I think folks tend to downplay how many other decent college programs there are in Texas splitting that recruiting pie.

Cheers.

If I recall correctly, Texas has its own TV network and, in general, doesn't believe in sharing any more revenue with the other league members than they absolutely have to. Supposedly, they regarded all the other schools as extras and background for the star (UofT). I think that's what people were saying was the main reason Nebraska left that league. Probably safe to assume that was why A & M  left too.

So it's hard to work up any sympathy for their current problems. Seems like just deserts.

We should be more concerned about Michigan's lack of elite recruiting than wasting time on Texas and its struggles.

OP isn't asking why Michigan hasn't capitalized on the talent in TX but is sayingTexas is struggling with keeping their talent in-state.

To answer your question, yes, we could use some of that talent.  Unfortunately, Michigan has a totally different approach to recruiting.  Michigan doesn't want to and can not fight with the top dogs of CFB.  So they are resorting to this ridiculous idea of fighting Mid-P5 schools for the 3* talent and somehow coaching them up to beat OSU.

Let me know how that idea works two years from now when Jim Harbaugh is no longer with the program after going 0-7 vs OSU.

There was literally multiple posts made about the fact that Michigan is one of the top programs in the country in regards to blue chip ratio. The problem is we have had other problems (various roster holes like OT after Newsome injuries, DT after 2017 class fell apart, scheme deficiencies) but bringing in enough talent is not it...well unless you suffer the delusion that we are going to recruit at OSU, Bama, Clemson levels.

Not getting commitments and no fighting for them are two different things. It’s pretty dumb to ignore how UM had the top BIG recruiting class for 2020. Donovan Edwards and JJ are blue chips. They fought for Worthy. They are fighting to get Nolen. They fought to get Nico over Bama. With a desperate fan base, a national outpouring of negative media every loss, and not beating rivals—that kills them. When they start turning the tide on OSU by winning a damn game, more higher recruits will come. Many of those kids are followers when it comes to “taking the safe route” to the NFL.

NIL should end up benefitting Michigan because of “the brand” and large alumni base.

The amount of people Missing my point entirely is astonishing.  The reason OSU is recruiting so well is because they can easily poach talent from texas and cali because the main schools located their are horrible. Michigan is recruiting at a high level the problem is Ohio state is literally recruiting  like never before seen in Ohio state history because of a weak l texas and cali local influence .

This is undeniably a big problem for UM and has been for years.  Year after year, OSU is getting a lot of top talent out of arguably the best state in the country for producing college players.

Since 2017, look at who they've pulled out of Texas:

Jeff Okudah, Baron Browning, J.K. Dobbins, Kendall Sheffield, Garrett Wilson, Jaxson Smith-Ngjiba, Ryan Watts, and Donovan Jackson.  They have Quinn Ewers, Caleb Burton and Terrance Brooks as commits for '22.

Ewers is the highest rated recruit they've ever had in the scouting site era.  Three of their top 15 rated recruits ever are from Texas and are in the last 5 years.  We need Texas to step up and keep some of those guys home.

1. I am not sure I have ever seen someone complain about downvotes quite so much.

2. Read your original post and Guthrie’s post - one of those is argued much more effectively.

3. I was going to suggest that part of the problem is that you should have led with how well Ohio State was recruiting in Texas, rather than focusing on how badly Texas is doing.  I went back 5 years

In 2018

Ohio State # 43 best recruit in Texas

Michigan #16 best recruit in Texas

Texas - 4 of top 5 recruits,  6 of top 7, 7 of top 10, 11 of top 15

Other Texas schools, 0 in top 5, 2 in top 10

2019

Ohio State - 1 of top 3

Texas - 2 in top 10, 3 in top 20

Other Texas schools - 2 in top 5, 3 in top 10

2020

Ohio State - 1 in top 5

Texas - 0 in top 5, 3 in top 10

Other Texas schools  - 3 in top 5, 4 in top 10

2021

Ohio State - 1 in top 5

Texas - 1 in top 5

Other Texas Schools - 1 in top 5, 3 in top 10

2022 - no one has actually committed yet and final rankings are not out

Ohio State - 1 in top 5, 2 in top 10

Many others not committed - Texas leads for many of the best in the state

Another way to look at it:

2022

Ohio State has 7 in top 100 - from 4 different States - 3 from TX,  0 from CA

2021

Ohio State has 12 in top 100 - from 8 different States,  1 from TX, 0 from CA

2020

Ohio State has 7 in top 100 - from 7 different states, 1 from TX, 1 from CA

2019

Ohio State has 4 in top 100 from 4 different states, 1 from TX, 0 from CA

2018

Ohio State has 13 in top 100 from 7 different States, 0 from TX, 0 from CA,  4 from FL

My conclusion- Ohio State gets a fuck ton ot top 100 kids, and they get them from all over the country

I mean, on the other hand, 7 of the top 10 players in TX per 247 are committed to or heavy leans toward Texas schools (including TAMU). It's not like TX is UT or bust.

In 2021, osu had 1 of the TX top 10. The rest went to Bama (2), OU (3), Tennessee (1), TAMU (2), and Texas (1). osu had 2 of the top 50 in TX.

In 2020, it was osu (1), TAMU (3), UT (3), TCU (1), Bama (1), and OU (1). osu had 2 in the top 50.

In 2019, osu (1), TAMU (4), UT (2), LSU (1), Bama (1), OU (1). osu had 1 in the top 50.

In 2018, UT (7), TAMU (2), Bama (1). osu had 1 in the top 50.

Conclusion - you're freaking out about one year with an unusually high number of top TX recruits committing to osu. Perhaps your point could have been better supported by letting us know if they have some new coach or recruiter with strong ties to TX, but instead, it's kind of a silly rant based on a very small sliver of data reaching a tenuous conclusion.

I bang on about it a lot, but Texas destroyed its own program when it nuked the Big 12 with the Longhorn Network. Texas used to be a state where every elite kid there dreamed of playing for Texas or beating Texas every year. Now it's just like Florida or California and the top guys go to top programs regardless of location.

I think we should try an experiment where you worry about Texas recruiting and I won't. We can report back in the future and see who had more fun.

This is why you guys need to come down to Ohio and start pulling some of the guys that OSU is slow playing. Pretty sure that’s why you whooped up on Cooper’s teams. He started recruiting nationally and you guys would swoop in and get the best Ohio kids that weren’t getting the offer from us. When we go to California to get a “higher ranked” Marcus Baugh you guys need to come in and get a Jake Butt from our backyard. Get some kids that want to kick our asses because we didn’t give them their coveted offer and use it against us.

Michigan used to have better players than Ohio State. Woodson and Howard didn’t have good games against osu because they had a chip on their shoulder, they had good games because they were the best players on the field.
We’re not going to beat osu with players from Ohio that you didn’t want. When we beat you it will be because we got the best players we could, from all over the country. A JJ McCartthy at QB, an Edwards at RB…those types of guys at every position. We don’t have the depth that you do at OSU, but if the staff can put together a couple of recruiting classes like last year, our starting 11 will be good enough to compete with anyone.

This is correct... OSU has  much better national recruiting than it ever did under Tressel, but does not have Ohio on lock down anymore.  ND, Cincinnati, UK, Wisconsin are all pulling 4-5 star players out of Ohio that Michigan is simply not getting right now.

-The Top 2 players in Ohio for 2023 class will likely wind up at Notre Dame... both 5 star players.  Michigan was not in the running for either... Marcus Freeman is earning his $2.5mm. OSU was not slowplaying these guys.  Michigan stomped ND into the ground the last time they played each other.

-In the 2021 class, ND, LSU, Alabama, and West Virginia, all pulled 4 stars out of Ohio.  Michigan only picked up the 17th best player in Ohio in this class.

-2020 Class: Cincinnati, UK, ASU all had 4 star recruits from Ohio. Michigan didn't sign a player in the top 50 of the Ohio Rankings.

I don’t know why the OP is taking heat for this post. I saw OSU got the DB commit from Texas today and my first thought was, “damn, OSU has been killing it in Texas lately. UM needs UT to be good again so they can close the border to OSU”. Hard not to argue OSU has been recruiting better than ever the last 3-5 years and it coincided with getting that Texas pipeline going. OP is not wrong to point that out.
