So I called the President's Office

Submitted by Suavdaddy on

And was directed to media relations.  They said that someone would get back to me on DD.  One question that I did ask was how many people had called on this subject.  The answer?  One other besides me.  I have also called Brandon's office and the Victors Club fund raisers.

Ladies and gentlemen.  Fire up those phones and demand some answers.  Spouting off on this message board doesn't get you much.  Putting calls into the admins, that can work.

I have nothing against you, Magnus, and have a good amount of respect for your opinions on this board.  But seriously, go have a picnic on a sunny day or enjoy a nice day at the beach and ease up on the cynicism.  Also, the athletic dept. doesn't have anything to do with whether or not Dorsey will be accepted at U of M.  That responsibility rests solely on the shoulders of admissions.

It was a joke, based on the ridiculous amount of time it took for the AD to address the CARA reports that are causing us to be sanctioned.

The OP listed phone numbers for the AD.  I made a joke.

Get it?  Clarkiefromcanada got it.

IF you are calling to demand change in how we admit students:

The day that our Athletic Department starts addressing the desires of the fans, it loses control.

There are things that happen within the University that the Athletic Dept. does not have much control over - this appears to be one.

As much as I lament the loss of Dorsey - calling the Athletic Department will have little effect.

So as much as I respect the posters need to do something, this just won't cut it.  Just the way it is...

IF you are calling to express your disappointment in how this has been handled by the University:

Go for it - they need to know.

Just don't expect changes, apologies or information - not going to happen!

It's just one football player so everyone needs to calm down. This has gotten out of hand.

While I agree with you on the face of things, it really could be beyond one football player. Like it or not the Demar Dorsey drama is out there. Most likely if the Freep hadn't done the initial hack job, this would all be much more under the radar.

But since it is out there, and Demar's side has made a public statement, it is likely of note to future recruits and competing coaching staffs.

If Demar is being treated unfairly (i.e., the University is going back on its word, etc.), the implications are beyond one football player. The media has spun the story this way. This is how it looks to future recruits. It will be used against us on the recruiting trail.

We don't know the University side of the story. There may have been stipulations to his LOI beyond making the NCAA clearinghouse that Demar did not meet. We don't know. If this is the case, then University needs to find a way to respectfully get the whole story out there: "Some of our signed recruits did not meet all the obligations of the agreement and we have therefore released them from their LOI so they may pursue other opportunities. While it is unfortunate they are not going to play for the University of Michigan, we wish them well."

A statement like that totally contains it to just one player. Future recruits realize we are serious about what it takes. Other coaching staffs may say "you might not make the cut for Michigan", but they can't say: "Michigan reneges on their word and you may get screwed if you sign an LOI with them".

So, this board has realized this. While there are many who are upset and concerned in the vacuum of knowing what is the real issue, there are equally as many who are concerned about the downstream ramifications.

Hey - freedom of speech. If we want to be heard, why not let the administration know how we feel. This can be done without being a Redneck Rocker like asshat about it. We are stakeholders after all.

When it comes down to it, our anger should be directed at Mark Snyder. Dorsey had been approved prior to signing day, and Snyder managed to create enough "controversy" and drum up enough outrage from alumni to convince admissions to change course.

His attack pieces placed the admissions office in a lose-lose situation, and the office was obviously going to side with alumni/boosters. Just another reason why I'm thrilled the AD has decided to cut ties with the rotting carcass of the once-great Detroit Free Press.

Who did you speak to in the admissions office that said they couldn't admit Dorsey because of their fear of public opinion?

I just ask because I can't seem to find it in your comment and it doesn't really fit with a University Admissions office whick was sued for dropping their admissions standards for certain classes of people.

I'm thinking that Michigan isn't afraid of one article on one potential student.

Now I'm not in agreement with the group that wants to storm the castle (although I understand their emotions on this), but I also don't think we need anymore speculation without any additional facts coming to light.

What is interesting though, is if your speculation without evidence is correct, and the Univeristy Admissions office is swayed by public opinoion, then it would be helpful for the pro "Admit Demar" group to storm the castle.

I'll admit that there's no concrete evidence to back up my assertion, but it seems to have some merit. Dorsey was approved prior to signing day, and Rich made a comment along the lines of, "He's qualified academically, so he'll join the team over the Summer." Something happened after signing day to cause admissions to rethink its decision.

I don't believe overall public opinion is the reason for the change. I think the Snyder articles painted Dorsey in such a negative light that prominent alumni felt compelled to call and voice absolute opposition. Taking everything into consideration, I can't imagine what else it could have been.

Although the University had to redefine admissions after the Grutter/Gratz cases, this doesn't seem to have changed the process for athletics.

There was a remark on mgoblog yesterday from a former employee of Michigan's Development (fundraising) department that said, in effect, that the wall between Development and Admissions is really high, really wide, and really thick.  No prominent alumnus should be able to have an effect on Admissions.  And, as someone above noted, Michigan's Admissions Department has been scrutinized by the U.S. Supreme Court, and has to consider its integrity sacrosanct.

If the purpose is to prevent future mishaps, I'm in favor. However, this will change nothing with Dorsey.

It's bush league to sit on your hands.  It's bush league to expect change by doing nothing differently.  It's bush league to complain about something and hope others do something for you.  Maybe it accomplishes nothing.  Maybe it is a waste of my time.  But doing nothing is absolutely positively certain to accomplish nothing.  I prefer to try because I care.  I am sorry you don't care enough to try, but don't give me reasons why you don't want to try.

Together we storm the admissions building and take control of the department.  We then proclaim me, Foote Fetish, acting Director of Admissions and Dictator for Life.  I then admit Demar Dorsey, and throw a celebration in which we discuss possible expansion rumors, eat mutton and perform feats of strength.  This festival will last until Football begins again in September.

Grab your torches!  Who will come with me?!

He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,

Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named

And rouse him at the name of Dorsey.

He that shall live this day, and see old age,

Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,

And say to-morrow is Saint Dorsey.

Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,

And say these wounds I had on Dorsey's

Admissions and athletics have been grappling over this issue for months, but if we had told the people at athletics to get Dorsey in, then he would be in. My God, we have all failed in our duties as Michigan fans.
