The nutsos at the We Must Ignite This Couch blog have always said that it was family that made him stay, i.e. a wife that refused to move.  People have turned down many excellent opportunities in the past for that very reason.

They are all crazy over there, but they do follow the program closely.  Who knows?

11/27/2010 - 9:16pm Right on the Wisconsin border

Right on the Wisconsin border at I-80, Iowa also has the Amish-run truck stop.  It's not the biggest or flashiest, but damn, the food is good.  You can also buy muffins the size of a baby's head, and, if you really are into that kind of thing, drop $500 and up on a handmade quilt.

Once they hit 18, they aren't kids any more in the eyes of the law.  It doesn't matter who is paying the bills, or how much supervision they may still need.

Blaming the universities for that is a little off-target, in my opinion.  They are just caught in the middle between kids and parents who aren't talking to each other.

I have to assume that RR has already tried to get him, from day 1, and both Shafer and GERG were back-up choices.

I understand if the guy doesn't want to leave a good situation.  Which is why we should all hope for a Hindenburg-type end to WVU's season.

11/01/2010 - 1:43pm Assuming Bill Stewart

Assuming Bill Stewart continues to drive WVU into the ground (and they could easily lose their next 4 games), I think RR will try one more time to get Casteel to come up and run the 3-3-5 for us.

"However, it should be noted that the award of athletic scholarships on a one-year, renewable basis is the more typical approach taken within higher education for talent-based and academic scholarships in general."

Bull-puckey. I was offered a few academic scholarships from several universities, and not one of them was characterized as one-year. They were all four-year scholarships. I could lose them by not holding up my end of the bargain (my GPA), but the school couldn't terminate them if they decided I was no longer useful.

09/23/2010 - 12:48pm Supporting Michigan (or any

Supporting Michigan (or any huge school) is a form of geo-piety.  It is much the same as being proud of being from the state of Michigan, or of being an American, or a rabid fan of frozen chocolate-covered bananas.  That last one is a given, of course.

A decent definition from geodz: "a specific sense of human territoriality in which a people (or nation) develops an almost mystical, organic bond of attachment to its homeland (best expressed by the German term Heimat), giving rise to powerful and sometimes violent nationalist sentiments (Blut und Boden). More generally, geopiety can refer to sentiments of human attachment to elemental spaces . . . [Ed: Ann Arbor, The Big House]. . . The various expressions of geopiety are summarized and discussed by Bishop (1994), who seeks to divorce them from metaphysical considerations and root them in a psychoanalytic theory which dissolves a priori boundaries between self and world in the construction of human Identity."

In other words, people like to believe that they belong to something larger than themselves.  It's normal, and there is no shame in it.
