SI puts Florida game outcomes in context

Submitted by gronostaj on

Sports Illustrated puts the possible outcomes of the game on Saturday in context.

Possible outcomes listed in the article:

Michigan pounds Florida: Was Florida bad because key players were suspended? Or is Florida just bad? Or perhaps Michigan, with mostly Jim Harbaugh recruits playing now, is not going to drop off at all and should compete for the Big Ten and national titles.

Michigan squeaks by Florida: Is Florida’s defense better than we thought after losing its coordinator (new Temple coach Geoff Collins) and a load of NFL talent? Do the Wolverines still need more seasoning? Are they both bad?

Florida squeaks by Michigan: Is Franks the quarterback the Gators have been looking for since Tim Tebow left? (Or maybe since Will Grier got suspended?) Are the Wolverines going to drop in the Big Ten, or did they just lose to a team that can win a third consecutive SEC East title?

Florida pounds Michigan: This seems the least likely result, and it would produce only one major question: How are the Wolverines ever going to beat Ohio State if they can’t beat a Florida team with key players suspended?

EDIT: I originally had "excuses" which the article does read a bit more like than these outcomes, but it's fair that these are just contextualized outcomes. Mea culpa.

And if UM loses, then all we will hear about is how Harbaugh is overrated and clearly taking players to Rome or doing 300 satellite camps is a waste of resources, blah blah blah.  I'd rather not hear that so let's just win!

So who cares what people think in September.  OSU lost to VT, people said the B1G was awful, and all they did was win the damn thing with their 3rd string QB.  Considering our 3rd string QB is either O'Korn or Peters, I like our chances of duplicating that feat even if we lose to Florida.

This will be a big win for our young team. Even if it is by 1 point. UF has a lot of talent and most of the suspended players were backups. I'd be more confident in a win if our young secondary was gelling quicker in camp. I still worry about a close game and one mistake by  young CB making for a loss.

Victory is assured, but I want to see Speight's chemistry with the young receivers and to find out where the secondary is on the learning curve. Florida's presence is immaterial, aside from providing some welcome uniform contrast.

Honestly, the only thing that matters is getting a win. If we're in the playoff picture at the end of the season, nobody is going to care whether we beat Florida 30-10 or 20-17. But it'll definitely matter if we lose.

By October, having an extra "W" will be all that matters.  The suspensions, score, etc. will have faded into the past.  A loss may not matter for the CFP, but only if there is only 1 "L" at the end of the season.  2 "L's" makes it almost impossible.

No UM fan should give a fuck what the media and haters say when we win this game. UM can't help that UF has a bunch of idiots and criminals on their team. The Wolverines can play only who UF fields that day. All that matters is winning. If key players not being on the field helps UM win, I say "thank you for being stupid." I want the win, no matter how it comes.

Well, I don't know...I mean, Florida's football team is now hampered by an innovative if clumsy attempt to turn the team into an LLC of sorts, but of course the NCAA won't let you do that at all, let alone with stolen cards and a small pot-based subsidiary. Criminal it may be, but if you're going to prep to go out in a game, they found a neat way to do it.

I don't see anything particularly controversial here. Even if we blow the doors off of Florida I think it should be noted they were without their top RB and top WR.

The Playoff selection committee begins convening, the suspensions won't really be remembered. They'll just look at how good/bad Florida is at that point in the season to determine how much weight to give Michigan's win over the gators.

This early in the season, any margin of victory won't have much or any impact on where Michigan is ranked near or at the end of the season.  There are too many significant conference games between Saturday and the end of the season, that will impact Michigan's ranking more.  I'll take any win and coming away from the game healthy.  Go Blue!

As many have said, JUST WIN.

It's the first game of the season. This game wouldn't have been a make or break game even if Florida was at full strength. Penn State and Ohio State are make or break games. If we beat Florida at full strength and lost to one or both of those teams, we wouldn't be in the playoffs regardless. If we lose to Florida, we'd be in trouble regardless.

JUST WIN.

You can make fun of the media all you want but the national perception of the program can still influence recruits and maybe even the playoff committee. Yes it is the first game of the season, but a loss by Michigan would turn up the Harbaugh is overrated talk to an insane level.

Michigan just needs to win by any score. If we can't win 2 out of 3 against OSU, Wisconsin, and PSU, then we probably aren't winning a Big Ten title and not going to the playoff. So the margin of victory is likely not going to matter from a week 1 game. Even if we are a one loss team who doesnt win the Big Ten and battling for the last playof spot, then the OSU, Wisconsin, and PSU are the ones that will have more weight. I woulld be stunned if a margin of victoy from a week 1 game had ANY impact on a playoff spot.

Don't care if we win by 1 or 100. Just win. At the end of the day, 1-0 and winning 59-0 is the same as 1-0 and winning 14-13. Everyone has ugly wins.

Use games like Cincy, Rutgers and AF to get the kinks worked out. As long as you win, everyone just kind of moves along and forgets exactly how the game was won.

This type of analysis is why Sports Illustrated is such an integral part of the sports zeitgeist.

"If Florida beats Michigan, it will leave us with questions about both teams.  If Michigan beats Florida, it will also leave us with different-but-still-somewhat-similar questions."

This is similar to the "they would have won if they had won" sports analysis that drives my non-sports loving wife insane and keeps her from enjoying watching football with me. (See also: "They would have won if he had caught the ball," "They would have won if he had gotten the first down," etc.)
