Scouting the Enemy: Ohio State QBs are Good

Submitted by Occam's Razor on

I was curious to see how the replacement QBs for JT Barrett would fair in their spring game and well, lets just say I think OSU's offense got a bit more dynamic in the QB department.

This also made their WRs look a lot better relatively.

Dwayne Haskins (raises fist in air in anger) went 9/19 120 yards with 2 great throws to Jaylen Harris (25 yards) and Ben Victor (43 yards)

Joe Burrow is giving Haskins a run for his money going 15/22 238 yards with another pair of great throws both to Demario McCall for 50 and 42 yards

Lastly, redshirt freshman Tate Martell seems to be the most JT-like in that he's a great runner but mediocre passer rushing 9 times for 59 yards while completing 5/16 for 28 yards.

Spring game caveats apply, but this year's OSU team is NOT going to be like the past 2 years with either Haskins or Burrow starting.

I hope our safeties are ready come November.

Yea. They’re pretty much the difference in the game the last few years. Their backups are better than our starters. Their QBs are better than our RB’s etc.

All those years in the '80s and '90s when we were beating Ohio State regularly, it was because we had superior play at the QB position.

While we were starting future NFL QBs like Harbaugh and Elvis and Brady, they were trotting out Herbstreit and Stanley Jackson and Bellisari.

Until we fix that, we are going to keep looking up at them.

Even if Shea doesn't start, our QB's will certainly be better than last years QB's, and the defense is being talked up as good as the one from two years ago, and perhaps even better. The offense is being talked up, it's all fitting together this year: They better be ready for us!

every buckeye fan i know was on Tate nuts. they laughed when i told them he'd never play a meaningful snap. Haskins is going to be a force. he's the next good one.

That’s great but for the past 2 season they have struggled against us and our maybe ok and piss poor play in the game by our qbs, Wilton had 2 bad turnovers and JOK threw the worst pick I’ve seen in the game. If Shea or Peters are above average we can win. Our D has played them tough ,now we just have to finish on O. If our line takes a decent step forward and qbs play improves , Michigan will be fine.

They will always have a qb who puts up numbers in that offense. The Game comes down to, just like last year, if we have an offense or not.

If osu could only extract the best attributes of each of their QBs and form one player like, oh, I don't know, Shea Patterson, then they'd be on to something.

They also played 2 hand touch with barley any pass rush. They looked decent in a glorified passing scrimmage. Wait until they're getting hit and see how they react. I do think Haskins is decent, but they lost alot, I don't think they'll be nearly as good as last season.

May I remind everyone that Peters looked great last year in spring ball and, well, wasn't that for most of the year. Bill Connelly mentioned that he did a back of the napkin analysis on spring game vs. actual season performance for QBs and there was virtually not correlation. I'm sure OSU's QB spot will be fine. But deriving anything from throwing against vanilla coverages with no blitzing or real pressure is a waste of time and only gets you unreasonably scared or excited, which is of course why this board was invented.

He’s graduating, and made it clear that he wants to play this fall. Apparently, his dad played at Nebraska and they do visit Columbus this year. Haskins will be the starter, but Urban isn’t going to say that now. There’s a small chance Martell could look around as well.

They’ve had one bad Qb since Tressel took over. And haven’t had one under Meyer. I think you should just expect them to have competent Qb play as a baseline.

I always thought he was a relatively good option for UM to have as an OSU QB.  I'm kinda surprised we never beat him.  But, OSU's QB was not the problem, ours was (and protecing him).  We are never going to beat them unless our QB can make some plays too (and our o-line can protect him long enough to do so).
