Recruiting: S Damani Dent committing on Oct 18
He previously had a date scheduled for Oct 10 but then backed off of it. This was bad for Michigan because it seems like they’re in the best position to land him after the Washington game. However today he posted an updated timeline of Oct 18 so hopefully still Michigan. Biggest competitor is Oregon. He’s possibly vying for a Georgia offer but they have higher rated kids on their board. Dent is fairly low rated right now but he’s been showing out in camp and compares favorably to Daymon David from last year who ended up a 4 star. He’s a pretty key target this year since Michigan doesn’t have any safeties committed as of yet.

It would be nice to get some 4 and 5 star players so we can beat teams like Rutgers by more than 7 points in the future.

The way things are trending Rutgers will be beating us by 7 pts in the future

I hear Gary Nova is returning to Rutgers.

I know we (deservedly) joke about Rutgers, but truth is, outside of the Ash era which was objectively a disaster, Rutgers has been pretty decent for most of the last 15 years. Keep in mind their 2015 season was derailed by scandals that caused multiple suspensions and led to Kyle Flood’s firing in a toxic situation.

Yeah outside of the Chris Ash era, the "Rutgers sucks lol" mantra around here doesn't really hold up. Especially considering Rutgers beat Michigan in 2014. The score was 26-24 and Gary Nova was an unstoppable throw-god in that game, throwing for 404 yards and 3 touchdowns. That was Rutgers' first win against a Big Ten team and the last year of Brady Hoke in the maize and blue.
If we want a Big Ten school to poke fun at, Illinois is a better candidate.

That is correct. Outside of all the seasons that we have available to compare them to a P5 team, they haven't sucked. Before that completely impartial cutoff of 15 years, Rutgers had only been to ONE bowl game and that was in 1978. They are a historically bad team, however, under Schiano, they were and are still just a little less bad.

So you are saying recruiting and stars matter and that we should not "Trust the Coaches", hmmm, you could be on to something.
September 30th, 2021 at 4:55 PM ^
Trust the coaches into beating Army by 3 points.
September 30th, 2021 at 12:53 PM ^
Correct. And teams like Washington by more than 21.
Just playing along with your witty sarcasm.
September 30th, 2021 at 4:51 PM ^
The same Washington team that lost to Montana and took Cal to OT.

When you bring up facts and relevant information, people get defensive and upset.

Dude.
September 30th, 2021 at 3:28 PM ^
You’ve been waiting all year for a close game to pull out that comment haven’t you?
September 30th, 2021 at 7:45 PM ^
This doesn't make any sense.

Safety commits always welcome - can never really have enough.
Let's reel him in!
Go Blue!!!
September 30th, 2021 at 12:47 PM ^
Better to be safe(ty) than sorry.
September 30th, 2021 at 1:34 PM ^
Which position do we want to limit "ever"... as in, if you can never have enough DTs, and Safeties, and CBs, and skill position guys, and QBs, and PK, and... what can you have too much of?
If your argument is that safeties move to other spots (bulk up to LB, or quick enough for CB).. is that true? Are safeties more amorphous than other D positions?
September 30th, 2021 at 5:19 PM ^
You can have too many "grow a DT" that don't grow.

"Satefy school"?

Show Him Damani!!!!
September 30th, 2021 at 12:52 PM ^
Is he gonna officially visit Oregon? If nothing changes, this one seems wrapped up for Michigan (Florida or Georgia offers could affect that).
September 30th, 2021 at 1:06 PM ^
I was excited to see we have 100% of the crystal ball predictions, but then I realized it's because only one person has put one in: Brice Marich. https://247sports.com/PlayerInstitution/Damani-Dent-at-Terry-Parker-264680/CurrentExpertPredictions/
Not sure if it's because his recruitment has been pretty low key/under the radar, or because no one seems to have a good read on where he's leaning...
September 30th, 2021 at 2:37 PM ^
He's rated much lower than Dillon Tatum, who claims he'll play safety at MSU, which is why I've pretty much quit trying to figure out how decisions are made about players being recruited. There's very little video on Dent. He was committed to Akron at one time, but currently has offers from Michigan, Oregon, Pitt, and a bunch of small schools. He did attend Oregon's camp and was offered two days later, so they must have been impressed.
September 30th, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
I think the decision to continue to spend resources "recruiting" is very dependent on the recruit's interest in being recruited. If said recruit doesn't want to attend your school, it is time to move on and recruit someone else on your board.

Shall we see if we can derail this thread with contentious bickering??

as long as he's taller and faster than Danny DeVito....
September 30th, 2021 at 3:55 PM ^
May he become a Michigan legend ala Dan Dierdorf.
October 1st, 2021 at 7:57 AM ^
classic dierdorf:
it would be unfair of us to speculate on this young man's future success as an athlete here at the University of Michigan. As commentators that's not our job, but I can see him being a big name around this program for years to come.
September 30th, 2021 at 4:00 PM ^
Cool. By that point we'll be 6-0.
September 30th, 2021 at 9:41 PM ^
Dent also received a bump up to an 86 (was an 84) rating on 247. He's now ranked the #51 safety on that site.
