Question of the week

Submitted by theguy49503 on

Soooooo do you give Peters a shot or do you roll with O'Korn again and chalk up Saturdays game as simply a bad game? Obviosuly everything is earned in practice but just curious given the JO that showed up Saturday looked like the one from the Inidana game last year

The problem is, he doesn't. JOK is just not good. One decent game against Purdue and everyone thinks we have something. We don't. People were calling for him when Speight was healthy. Speight is far better under pressure. Peters is probably the better player by far and his leadership skills just need to be better and that is my guess as to why he isn't there yet.

Everyone places so much faith in JH that we can't even question him when it comes to this and I believe he knows more than any of us will ever know about it, but when we start to not be able to question things when there is an obvious challenge, that becomes a problem.

In his 7 years so far as a big-time D-1 coach, he hasn't won a league title. So I think it's pretty fair to say he isn't so infallible that we can't question some decisions here and there.

I believe we will see Peters or one of the others very soon. If it takes losing to Indiana to do it, that sucks. I don't want that to happen. But it certainly may. It won't be that easy because that offense can score a bit.

One thing I would like to see on offense though is, can we please just let one of the running backs play consecutive plays or heaven forbid, entire drives. There is no flow. It's disruptive. They aren't so tired that they can't run the ball for an entire drive.

First of all, learn to read. I didn't say he isn't a good coach. Second, that he hasn't won titles isn't a judgement call. It's factual. Of course I expect we will win titles with him. That wasn't the point. The point is, guys like you won't let some of us have a different opinion than you about him or you attack like you just did.

So fuck off and don't say I said something I didn't.

O'Korn really struggles, and it cannot be directly attributable to offensive line play, I don't think it would be a mistake to play him for a few series.  Like, in all seriousness and apart from any melodrama, Michigan has to win out at this point to be a player in the division.  That is probably not all that likely. (though Penn State winning out after Michigan last year was probably even more far fetched so you never know).

With this in mind, I think you roll with O'Korn until the next loss.  After that, I really don't see much good reason not to give Peters some run.  His redshirt is already gone and I think it is probably 50/50 that Speight even returns next year.  I don't understand the logic of not giving him meaningful snaps in that scenario.

Michigan's D will keep the team in every game --- yes, even Penn State, Wisconsin, and tOSU. Thus even with an erratic QB and a somewhat porous O-line, M stands a good chance of winning four remaining games on its schedule, and could even work a surprise in one or two of the other three. If Peters isn't ready because of lack of command in the huddle or whatever reason, he isn't going to become more ready by desperately throwing him into the fire. Stick with what will give M the best chance to win, coach up JOK and the O-line as much as possible, and if the season ends up 8-4, so be it. Go Blue.

Only caveat is if O'Korn doesn't make better decisions, I pull the plug.  He threw 3 picks, could've been more.  He's trying to break the pocket on every snap.  If he doesn't settle down, I make the move out of necessity and treat Peters like the 2000 Baltimore Ravens treated Trent Dilfer.  We're going to win with defense and special teams.  You just go out there and hand the ball off.

JOK looked good the first two offensive possesions. A couple times that he moved on to his second read and stayed in the pocket or at least rolled out with intent to extend the play and pass downfield. After the Isaac fumble its like a switch flipped. He locked onto one guy and if he wasn't open when the pressure was coming he got happy feet and ended up running into the pressure out of sheer panic. The progressed into just chucking the ball downfield which led to the INT's. I don't see him being able to shake this performance off before Indiana, he seems to get rattled very easily.

I also think play calling has been bad as weel. For examply the way sparty plays D and sit in quarters and the LB are so down hill why not take advantage of the middle of the field? It worked to get us a big play to get us down to the goal line and we never saw the middle of the field exploited again. also the tosses worked and off tackle but we would go away from it which is also a head scratcher

It's not even noontime in Ann Arbor, West Coast MGoBloggers just might be finishing their early morning workouts, and already there's criticism of how a post gets worded.

Considering Saturday night's downpour disaster, there may be hundreds of questions asked since then that will qualify for "Question of the Week" . . . or Day, Minute and Second.

Less important than the questions are the ANSWERS.  Do the coaches and players have any ANSWERS that will alleviate the pain and suffering since Saturday night?

What do you have to lose? It would be nice to at least give him some reps. If JOK struggles early to sit in a clean pocket, give it to the new guy for a series or two. The defense should give us plenty of possessions, so why not give him some fire?

Hindsight is a bitch. But Last year Speight could command this offense and could actually move the ball. Yes he makes bad mistakes and has been very off this year, but the reason Speight is the starter is simply becasue of maturity. Harbaugh knows this, and he can command the offense. O'Korn is not the guy. He had one good game against Purfuckingdo. The real problem is the Offensive line, and lack of explosive playmakers. Plain and simple. IU is going to be a dogfight. I guaranfuckintee it. We may lose that game.

The Defense will always keep us in games this year. But when we go 3 and out, and turn the ball over, the defense will begin to tire out, and start to give up big plays. No other QB on our roster is going to be the answer to these offensive woes. We have to stop turning the ball over and throwing it to the other team. MSU is not good. Hence the 34 yards of offense and 0 points in the second half. We lost to a team NOTRE DAME just smashed! There is no miracle QB who is going to lead us to the promised land. Not going to happen. Neg me all you want, but the O line sucks and the play calling was terrible in the MSU game.

for a while.  He bails to early out of the pocket.  He didn't in the Purdue game and I was hoping maybe he had worked that out but against MSU it seemed like he was bailing early.  I think even Herbie commented during the game that if the first read isn't open, JOK just bails instead of going through his progressions.

Peters should get snaps against Rutgers, Minnesota, and Maryland as we'll probably have 2 losses at that point. Both for development and even to be ready this year. Probably not against PSU, WI and OSU as our OL will get him destroyed.

I know nobody is going to want to hear this BUT the CFP, and BIG title are pretty much out the window...the only thing left is bowl positioning so why not get the future started NOW and get the experience we need..Our offense is Horrifically Inept...not much to lose at this point

Our defense is good enough that none of those things are completely out of the picture except maybe the playoffs. If Peters is worse than O'Korn, than that swith will hinder development at literally every other spot on the offense.

1.) We need a receivers coach - plain and simple, especially with all the youngsters on this team.  Inexcusable.  Jay Harbaugh also taking alot of heat for the fumbles and missed assignments.

2.) Our issues are becoming bigger than they should be due to some shoddy play calling.  We absolutely 100% needed to score on that opening drive and on 3rd and goal we're throwing a fade to a 5'9" receiver who might not be able to catch.

Did Runyan play Saturday?

I don't think JBB is better than Ulizio.

I agree with those in the "Too many cooks in the kitchen camp" for our offense.  Needs to be some streamlining and we should all get an explanation for how it works currently.

Refs stunk it up once again on Saturday.  Missed several calls on both sides, but more on our side with bigger effect.

1.) Call on Bush should have been on Allen who punched him in the back of the neck- huge miscall as Hurst had blown up the play and MSU would have been facing 3rd and long.  They may not have scored or FG at most.  Huge break for MSU as noted by Herbstreit.

2.) Winovich was tackled by Giancakos on the pass to Stewart.

3.) Mone was tackled by Allen on the long run by London.

4.) Cooper hits O'Korn way late and no call.

5.) Bush gets decked by Campbell late - no call.

6.) Higdon holds for about a second and of course that one is called and takes a TD off the board.

We needed to show more urgency in the 1st half as we knew the storm was coming.  Lewerke's father told him "You better score in the 1st half because you aren't going to in the 2nd".

There is certainly plenty of things to focus one's ire (offensive line, TOs, playcalling, weather, donantonio having sold his soul to ensure wins, etc...) but I've been suprised at the lack of outrage over JO'K getting yanked down on the sideline apparently by an msu assitant (or trainer).  Even their gatorade toters were so fired up they're assualting our QB on the sideline and nobody seems to be bothered much.

This is not the time do it. Indiana is good enough to beat Michigan as currently constructed. Having Peters make his first start on the road against a very good defense (Indiana's D ranks #22 per S&P) is a recipe for disaster. If you're going to make the move, I would wait until Rutgers. By that point, Michigan will have either lost to Indiana and/or PSU and have nothing left to play for or they will have beaten both be in the mix for the East crown.

There’s a chance, ya. Is it a slim chance? You bet. But do you really want us to give up and focus on next year half way through the season after 1 loss to a rival in a monsoon? That’s a losers mentality, and I hope to god our coaches don’t embrace that bullshit

GoBlueSPH

We had 2 fumbles in the first half on promising drives. That isn’t Okorns fault. This defense is really good and can stop any team in the B10. If the offense gets even gets itself up to “only 1
turnover per game” status we can still have a decent season.

Can the offense manage that? Only time will tell. But you at least have to try. For god sakes we’re only half way into the season.

Honestly I don't.

However, I still think O'Korn gives Michigan the best chance at beating Indiana and more importantly PSU. If Michigan can avoid the loss in Bloomington and pull off the upset in Happy Valley (again, not likely, but possible), it's smooth sailing until Wisconsin and OSU. And as we just learned against MSU, anything can happen in a rivalry game. Brady Hoke was a clown coach yet his teams somehow managed to be competitive every year against Meyer's OSU teams.

In my view, it's too early to throw in the towel. And that's what I think you're doing if you go with Peters.
