Penn State Continues to Scoff at NCAA With Recruiting Success

Submitted by Cold War on

This upcoming season was supposed to be the time period where Penn State began to feel the Berlin Wall of recruiting failures begin to fall upon them. The domino effect of their inevitable downfall and disappearance into obscurity was supposed to begin with nearly every considerable recruit in the nation refusing to go to the central-Pennsylvania institution. People referred to Penn State’s punishment dealt to them by the NCAA as this era’s version of the ‘Death Penalty.’ Top-level talent not going there was intended to render the program to the point of near irrelevancy by the time the five-year probation concludes.

Today, yet again, Bill O’Brien and his staff once again displayed that they will do everything in their power to make sure that the NCAA’s intended outcome for the football program never comes to fruition.

O’Brien and staff secured the commitment of four-star safety Marcus Allen from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, adding to an already impressive 2014 incoming class. Stuff like this wasn’t supposed to happen.

I really could not be less worried about PSU with Peppers.  He wants a big time team that is known on a national stage, and even I sometimes forget that Penn State is in the Big Ten since they stopped being really good.  Does it seem like a decade since we've played them to anyone else?

Their 2012, 2013, and now 2014 classes have been very meh. 2013 actually looks like a classic MSU class (2-3 great players, a lot of no-names). With their added depth issues, they're going to suffer for a while because even with MSU-level talent, the depth problems are going to make them struggle to reach bowl games at all

Rivals says he has one, but none of the other  three services do (scout pointedly says he does not), and I can't find anything about him in regards to Michigan recruiting here or anywhere else

Michigan won 11 games in 2012 when "the NCAA’s intended outcome" wasfor them to win far fewer.  OSU rose from "the proverbial grave they were put in by the NCAA" and went 12-0.  Both of those are better exmples of schools scoffing at the NCAA. /S

Seriously, this guy is ranting up his own ass.  Penn State may have a top-teens class right now, but that is because it is so early in the process that a single recruit can swing you five spots in the standings.  When every top-level team has 15 or so recruits, THEN you can start to say something about the standings.

I agree with the sentiments that a strong Penn State is good for the conference and good for Michigan, and with those that say BO'B seems like a great guy and a fine coach.  PSU slappies don't do their school's rep any good by posting crap like the rant article, though.

It's not the level of talent they bring in (which, according to Rivals, this class is pretty meh), but the AMOUNT of talent, that is going to kill them.  Their scholarship sanctions are going to level this program.  Look what happened to USC.  The reductions to Penn State make USCs reductions look like child's play.

I'm sure that he's a solid player, but he's listed as a 3 star on rivals and not rated by ESPN. In fairness Scout and 247 do list him as 4-star. Still, one player with widely varying recruting ratings doesn't sound like "stuff like this wasn't supposed to happen" territory.

So the fact that Penn State's class currently isn't sitting around 80th in the nation is considered to be a reason to celebrate?  When their class caps out at around 15 or 16 with no players in the Top 150 and highlighted by their one 4 star recruit, the sentiment is going to be a lot different.  Someone said it earlier, PSU is going to have to fill lots of holes in their depth chart with walk-ons and 2 star talent.  That is a recipe for disaster.  It's very premature to signal the phoenix-like rise of Penn State yet.  The next 6-10 years are going to be brutal for them.

I just want to beat them in Happy Valley this year.  If we lose to PSU in a down year I'll never hear the end of it from all the Penn Staters I work with.

We're not going to lose to them this season.  If you look at their roster, all their offensive depth at the skill positions has either transferred or graduated.  Their roster literally looks like Michigan's in 2009, only less talented.

They may find a way to scape enough upper classmen together to maintain a competent defense, but I don't see them shutting us down.

They're getting beat this season.
