OT: What is Your Favorite Sound

Submitted by Steve Breaston… on

Straight from my homeboy James Lipton comes a question that I've tried to answer for weeks: what is your favorite sound? Is it a beer can cracking open? The ping of a perfectly-hit drive? The crowd after a buzzer-beater? The opening notes of Hail to the Victors? Your ex saying "I'm not pregnant?"

My favorite sound in the whole world has to be a putt hitting the bottom of a cup. It sort of represents one of 18 culminations of a job well done (or not, depending).

I'll keep this PG-13

1. The sound of waves and seagulls

2. The loon on a quiet night near water.

3. A bird that is incredibly rare except in western PA that I cannot recall the name of. It makes the most beautiful sound and it reminds me of my grandparents and their home.

4. The sound Michigan statium made on the most impressive of Biakabatuka's runs against OSU.

It's been a long time since I've heard anything normally. Honestly, probably the out of tune moan of an approaching ice cream truck playing "Do your ears hang low?"

Yo-Yo Ma stepped in front of my car one time when he was in-residence at Michigan (not at a crosswalk - he just was not paying attention).  Central Campus - not too far from Rackham.   I hit my brakes and came to an abrupt stop.  Yo-Yo Ma looked up, waved, and continued to cross the street.

You're welcome.

Any sound a lightsaber makes. Whether it's being activated, deactivated, swung, or clashing with another blade. The Ghostbuster's protons packs discharging are a close second.

Mexican Wife makes when I hammer her! Honestly there is nothing sweeter then hearing Mexican broads get nailed. That's why I live in LA, there everywhere, ahhhh

of course at the top of my list are the giggles of my boys when they're just losing it, the rare sounds my wife makes when she gets...you know; the Walking Dead theme music, a well-tuned Les Paul or Taylor in the hands of someone who knows how to use it, a driver connecting with a golf ball, a healthy v8, Keith Jackson's voice on a Saturday, Temptation & Hawaiian War Chant, fully automatic weapon fire, an A-10 warthog, and even though I'm a Wings fan, I really do like a national anthem sung by Jim Cornelison.

Too hard to pick one. I love my daughter's laugh, it's maniacal and sounds too hard to be real but it is. I love the sound of my son playing baseball -- the ball hitting the mitt, the bat hitting the ball. I love the sound of onions sizzling in oil in a sauté pan, the beginning of something.

...that happens to the osu, sparty or nd crowd collectively, as the air is ripped from their lungs by a last-second Michigan victory.
