OT: Watching TV Online - Fire TV, Roku, etc

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

I tried posting this thread yesterday, but the site crashed around that time.  Since it's slow around here today we'll give it another go.

I recently picked up a Fire TV Stick, which, somewhat disappointingly, isn't nearly as gay as that name implies.

My question is, what shows should I be watching?  I stumbled upon Schitt's Creek, which is pretty damn funny and I added The Man in the High Castle to my queue, although I haven't watched it yet.

Wife and I watched Hannibal on it. I also watched the entirety of How I Met Your Mother. We just started watching the man in high castle only on episode 3. I've been somewhat disappointed with the movies it has available for Prime but it's also valuable for watching ESPN or fox sports go. Wish you could get BTN2go on it but alas.

Not bad for its cost.

I won't buy anything in digital with regard to movies or games. Very seldom do I ever purchase any music since I can get it all for free from other apps. But movies and games angers me so much with digital prices and not having anything substantial. At least with a disc I can resell it and recoup some of my initial cost. With digital you're up shit creek yet they want the same amount of money for a digital game/movie vs a physical one.
I'd jump on board digital if it was a fraction of the cost. There's no reason old movies or games should be full price when you can go down to your local exchange and buy them for a few dollars.

"Man In the High Castle" starts strong then just...lays there. Watched 6 full epi.,started 7 and said "Nah, life's too short!" Great sets, design, acting, but Sloo-oo-ow after 1st 2 epi.

Some other made for Amazon shows are pretty good, and I liked that on Prime they have movies free that are $5.99, $7.99 and up On Demand. Netflix still has way more programming & better original content by far.

You can watch Netflix, Hulu, etc on Fire TV.

Making a Murderer will make you want to blow up the state of Wisconsin. It is fascinating to watch but will surely make you angry.

To that point, Making a Murderer is truly groundbreaking. It has a lot of comparisions to Serial, which I haven't watched, but I think the actual social/societal effect of that documentary is going to be something talked about for a long time. Has potential to be the most influential documentary ever created to this date in my opinion.

I'm behind the world in terms of shows watched, but I'm watching Lost right now. Great show.

Parks and Rec is really good.

Bob's Burgers if you are into cartoons.

The first two seasons are on Amazon Prime. Hopefully the third will be added soon since the 4th season is not too far off.

It's probably the best show on TV.

I have so many issues with my fire tv stick. It has trouble loading shows/movies and when it finally does, they freeze. I have a Roku 3 which I use for th tv in my living room and it is a million times better. Obviously the Roku is much more powerful, but it'd be nice if the fire stick would actually work at least once in a while.

I just finished Narcos on Netflix. It was awesome. Im watching The Blacklist now and am really enjoying it. Also would recommend The Shield and Prison Break.

Can't really compare them, the Fire Stick is the cheap wireless alternative to the Fire box, which compares well to the Roku and now supports 4K for those who have upgraded to that. I have a Fire stick for my kitchen TV and it rarely has problems, probably because it's close an access point and I have 300/300 service.

I have a Roku with Netflix, Hulu, and Amazone Prime TV subscriptions. Netflix is by far the easiest medium to navigate and use on a daily basis.

radical idea, but think of all the glorious, fun, enriching things you could do with all that time.  wife, kids, hobbies, sports, the world is your oyster.

Devil (or angel) on my shoulder with that message.  I would honestly love to, but my wife is a TV and social media junkie.  I think if I threw the televisions away I'd be in divorce court soon after.

So when I eventually do it, be prepared for me to move into your barn.
