OT: A New Planet in our Solar System!!!

Submitted by FauxMo on

Apparently, we have a new 9th planet to replace demoted Pluto, Planet X!

It is much further away from Earth than Pluto (and may take as many as 10,000 years to circle the Sun), but it is also much larger than Pluto. In my mind, this scientifically confirms what men have long feared....size matters....

Can someone smarter than me explain why we can find planets a kabillion light years away from earth but we somehow didn't know there was a 9th planet floating at the edge of our own system?

I'm not sure if I'm smarter than you, but I'll try.  We find planets a kabillion light years from earth by looking at the stars they orbit.  When an exoplanet crosses in front of its star from our perspective, the light of the star dims slightly.  By observing the pattern of how the star dims, and how much it dims, we can tell if there are planets, and how big they are.

On the other hand, finding a planet that's farther away from our sun basically requires direct observation. That means we're trying to pick out a dark object against a black background, which is pretty hard.

Fun fact: The guy who discovered pluto was named Clyde Tombaugh. Tombaugh sounds a lot like Harbaugh. Could Tombaugh have been an alias? Could Harbaugh have conquered outer space and is now on the path to conquer football? Yes, yes he can. AND DON'T YOU DARE TRY TO CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE

This is the infamous Planet X or Nibitu that has been talked about by Dr. Robert Harrington and Zachariah Sitchin. Modern evidence first noted in 1983 by the way.

My favorite part of the article is not the existence of a new planet, but the existence of the best ever two word descriptor: Massive Perturber.

Don't know if it is my new signature line or next year's fantasy football team. Hell, I may even have to jump on the twitters just to snag that name.

nowadays I love it. I attribute the change of heart to a combination of getting older and thinking about life/death and why we are here, all of the information to read on the internet and those crazy shows nowadays on the History Channel, LOL.
