OT - Michigan's Drink

Submitted by Blue Bennie on
A friend of mine is an account manager for one of the liquor distributors here in Indianapolis, and asked me if there were any typical Michigan based drinks that the "Michigan bar" could feature for the Big 10 basketball championship. I do have a Wolverine shot that I created during my bartending years (below), but can't think of anything else off the top of my head. Any thoughts? Wolverine 1 part Citron 1 part Chambourd 1 part Curacao A spash of sweet and sour. Shake with ice. Throw in a lemon wedge for color if you want. It can be drank as a shot, or sipped.

Disagree with which is greater, agreed that I also think it's what he's talking about. That said, Michigan is so a beer state, it should be flaunted as if it were a trophy wife. Could always go with Maker's Mark on the rocks. Or so I would estimate by seeing certain billboards around Columbus.

Also disagree. Oberon is way more popular, and it is a solid beer..... but Two-Hearted is the IPA by which all IPAs should be judged. It's Pure Michigan....

Thanks for the heads up; I never tried the concoction, but once my roommates and I spend hours and about 3 fifths of liquor trying to make "Red, White and Blue: These Colors Don't Run" out of Curacao, Vodka and Grenadine. It sounds and probably was easy, but we were drunk and getting drunkerer, so the colors kept running.

There is a Grand Traverse Cherry Flavored Vodka (made with Michigan cherries) floating around that is pretty good. It makes a solid shot, you can do vodka and Red Bull with it and some other things. As far as I know there is no official mixed drink of Ann Arbor. As others have said, Michigan is mostly a beer state.

The Michigan bar here has a Maize and Blue Shot: Vodka Curaco Pineapple/Orange Juice (Depending on how you want your Maize to look) Pour the juice in separately so that it's its own layer. Drink.

Deep Blue Martini - a lovely shade of blue and an intense flavor. Depth of the blue color depends on the sour mix used: one part Sky Vodka, one part Blue Curacao, 1 part sour mix and shake well in a cocktail shaker. garnish is a twist of lemon. Cool Blue Martini - a nice color and very smooth: three ounces of gin, ounce dry vermouth, a splash of blue Curacao, and a dash of lemon juice shaken in an ice-filled cocktail shaker and strained into a martini glass, garnished with a lemon twist. GO BLUE!

No, it finished near the bottom at my beer tasting-fest this past Christmas. All of the Bell's stuff did poorly, because it is pretty shitty stuff. Equal in popularity and content to: Goose Island Polar opposite of: Darkhorse Better than: Coors and other Golden, Colorado products Perfect for: People drinking at Dominick's

Two Hearted is an IPA, so it is supposed to be very hoppy. If you want to compare it to other good IPAs, try the Darkhorse Crooked Tree, Dogfish 90 Minute, and the Stone Ruination...the Two Hearted will not seem too hoppy after you have tried those out.

While I think that Oberon is incredibly overrated (though this is mostly due to American Wheat beers just not interesting me), the Two Hearted, Expedition Stout, and Third Coast Old Ale (not to be confused with the Third Coast Ale) are exceptional beers. I understand that many people do not like the floral hops of the Two Hearted, and agree that most of their other widely distributed beers (such as the Amber Ale and Lager of the Lakes) are average at best, but to call the brewery out as shitty stuff across the board is an over the top reaction.

Shitty is a relative scale. It is above average (hell, even good) when taking the entire population of beer in to account. Yet, when I compare it to its peers, it is left wanting. The thing Bell's has going for it is its considerable distribution network. As I said, Goose Island. Dear lord, I am a beer snob elitist asshole.

because the only beer that Goose Island has that is even relevant to its style is the Matilda. Along with the three I mentioned earlier, Bell's also has a doppelbock that I have only ever seen at their brewery in K-Zoo that is as good as any American doppelbock I have tasted. Bell's is not my favorite brewery by a long shot, but Larry Bell has made at least those 4 beers that stand up very well to others in their style. And as one beer snob elitist asshole to another, it is nothing to be ashamed of...

They have many fine products which I enjoy on a regular basis That said, their quality control has declined as they've grown. I've had some Oberon that you can see right through, and tastes more like Leini Summer Shandy. I wouldn't put them at the top of Michigan breweries ... that said, their stuff isn't shit. Beer 30 Light is shit

Obviously Michigan is a beer state. So I like the Bell's suggestions by previous posters. I believe that the OP is referring to harder beverages, hence his made up drink (which I might try this weekend, lots of supplies needed though). I would submit that Michigan's drink is Wild Turkey. We have people that like to drink the drink and we also have the animal (see the wild turkey attack at that truck stop a couple years ago).

I agree that Bells and Founders have amazing beers but please don't forget about New Holland Brewing Company, they have some amazing brews including Dragon's Milk which is by far my favorite winter beer...
