OT-ish: NCAA Super Regional (thank you Texas A & M)

For those of you still tuned into the NCAA baseball tournament, Texas A & M took care of Louisville yesterday, and there was some good chatter on Aggie Twitter about helping us out. And Notre Dame just eliminated #1 Tennessee to advance to the CWS. Don't feel great about that since it's ND but it is quite the upset.

How does that help us out? It doesn't. What it does do is remove the team who benefitted from two blown calls: first from their hometown, Loo-vull grad ump, and then from the replay official who didn't (or wouldn't) do his job.

In short, it doesn't help us, but it hurts them. And sometimes that's the best you'll get.

I'm pretty meh about ND baseball, but I love it anytime the SEC gets knocked down a peg. Now I'm rooting for UConn to knock off Stanford for a variety of reasons.

Louisville losing to Texas A & M in a Baseball Super Regional has no impact on Michigan’s place in the final Learfield Directors Cup standings.

Unfortunately, both Stanford and Texas could overtake Michigan in the final standings. Stanford, as national champs in women’s golf and water polo and runners up in rowing (290 points from those teams) and Texas with national champs in (edit: men’s golf, men’s tennis and women's rowing and runners-up finishes in softball and men’s and women’s track and field (570 points from those teams) might pass everyone to finish first, just as they did last year.

These were the top six schools in the Directors Cup standings after the winter season, showing point totals and teams in NCAA Tournaments this spring:

Michigan (1,000.25 - 10): Baseball (lost in championship game of 12-seed Louisville Regional), Softball (lost in championship game of 16-seed UCF Regional), Women’s Lacrosse (beat Notre Dame; lost in second round), Men’s Tennis (lost to Ohio State in quarterfinals), Women’s Tennis (lost to Texas in second round), Women’s Golf (20th), Rowing (10th), Men’s Track and Field (Tied for 46th in NCAA championships), Women’s Track and Field (No score in NCAA championships), Women’s Water Polo (lost in quarterfinals)

Stanford (851.25 - 11): Baseball (National 2-seed in Super Regional), Softball (lost in Super Regional), Women’s Lacrosse (lost in opening round), Men’s Tennis (lost in third round), Women’s Tennis (lost in third round), Men’s Golf (18th), Women’s Golf (National Champs), Rowing (2nd to Texas, based on finish in eights, but tied in points), Men’s Track and Field (8th in NCAA championships), Women’s Track and Field (13th in NCAA championships), Women’s Water Polo (National Champs)

Ohio State (842.00 - 8): Softball (lost in 11-seed Tennessee Regional), Men’s Lacrosse (lost in opening round), Men’s Tennis (lost in semifinals), Men’s Golf (23rd), Women’s Golf (lost in Michigan Regional), Rowing (8th), Men’s Track and Field (Tied for 46th in NCAA championships), Women’s Track and Field (12th in NCAA championships)

Notre Dame (814.00 - 6): Baseball (In College World Series from 1-seed Tennessee’s Super Regional), Softball (lost in 9-seed Northwestern Regional), Women’s Lacrosse (lost to Michigan in opening round), Men’s Tennis (lost in opening round), Men’s Track and Field (Tied for 30th in NCAA championships), Women’s Track and Field (No points in NCAA championships)

North Carolina (702.00 - 8): Baseball (10-seed lost to Arkansas in Super Regional), Women’s Lacrosse (National Champs), Men’s Tennis (lost in quarterfinals), Men’s Golf (lost to Pepperdine in quarterfinals of match play), Women’s Tennis (lost to Texas in semifinals), Women’s Golf (7th in Michigan Regional), Men’s Track and Field (tied for 68th with 1 point in NCAA championships), Women’s Track and Field (37th in NCAA championships)

Texas (679.50 - 9): Baseball (Currently tied with 8-seed East Carolina in Super Regional that’s in an extended weather delay), Softball (Runners-up in College World Series), Men’s Tennis (lost to Michigan in round of 16), Women’s Tennis (National Champs), Men’s Golf (National Champs), Women’s Golf (13th), Rowing (National Champs), Men’s Track and Field (2nd in NCAA championships), Women’s Track and Field (2nd in NCAA championships)

It doesn't help us, but at least we don't have to watch Louisville advance and keep thinking "that should be us".

Most likely A&M was a better team than either them or us.

Just a question about estimates. Are people taking into account that each school can count only so many sports? Stanford doesn't get all the points from each one of their dozens of varsity sports. It makes winning a National Championship in the sports that count double even more important.
