OT: First (and likely last) visit to Angelo's

Submitted by crg on November 9th, 2023 at 7:07 PM

The wife & I are planning to try out Angelo's tomorrow for the first - and likely only - time.  That said, what are recommendations for the best/signature items to get there?  Is there anything that a first-time visitor should know?  Any special things that someone "has to do there at least one before they die?"  We've known about the place's reputation for a long time (and the Dave Seigel song), just never got around to it.

Thanks!

Clockwise from top: potatoes, bread/cheese, meat, eggs

If I’m braving the mean streets of SF, definitely not doing it for that not particularly nouveau combo

i just think if there was an interesting way to combine those ingredients, it would have been invented by now.

Have you noticed that all the breakfast plate pics in the thread are almost indistinguishable from one another?

Maybe it’s just that breakfast food is boring.

Despite its seedy location, before it closed in late 2021 due to the pandemic, Dottie’s True Blue Café had been my go-to place for breakfast and brunch most times when I was in San Francisco. But I discovered Sweet Maple and in recent years it has been my regular stop for breakfast and brunch when visiting the Bay Area. Try the Millionaire’s Bacon as a side with anything you order.

Famous for their eggs Benedict but that was never my thing.

Absolutely have to do raisin bread--better yet, French toast with raisin bread.

I have a copycat of their raisin bread that's pretty good.

Edit: If you are one of those ne'er do wells who doesn't like raisins, the regular bread toasted is top notch as well.

Second semester, senior year, first morning of finals week after studying all night, breakfast with the Day 1 guys before it was all over.  Still my homies to this day.

I will never forget it.  RIP Angelo's.

I was never partial to their food. Much preferred Benny's and Fleetwood. I recall the potatoes being particularly awful.

With that said, they're known for the raisin toast, but I will also put in a shoutout for their orange juice. I can't remember the exact details, but they do something absurd like fly them fresh up from Florida weekly. It's fresh squeezed and I remember, as a college kid that was not accustomed to such things, being absolutely blown away by it. Back in the early 2010s, it was like, $8 for basically a sippy cup, so I'm sure it's even more expensive now. But it really was delicious.

Hmmm the only Angelo's I ever knew of was on the corner of Davison and Franklin on Flint's Eastside.  The original Coney Island with fries with gravy.  None better.

I haven't been to Angelos in YEARS, since my med school days in the 90's. But I will be in town for OSU. Any idea how early I need to show up on a Sat or Sunday to avoid waiting in a long line?

I've lived in A2 for more than 50 years and I've eaten at Angelo's once. I've always lived in other parts of town with other breakfast joints much closer. Still sad to see it close, though.

As an undergrad, I always got the Angelo's breakfast with raisin toast.  But the real goodies are:

1.  Deep fried french toast (even better with raisin bread) and

2.  Pumpkin pancakes

My campus in the 1990s and I worked in bars on Main Street so I got hooked on The Fleetwood.  Angelos was too bougie, far for me back then when I went I was good but now I guess its iconic.

Deep friend raisin bread French toast. I know someone here has had better at some random cafe in Paris and desperately wants to tell you about it, but you'll be happy you had it, even happier if you can actually finish.

Meh. It's overrated, super busy and you usually wait 3 days to sit. But I suppose go once. Zingermans is great for breakfast.

To be fair, my entire college career, I never woke up in time to eat breakfast... Unless I never actually went to sleep..

Do it once, then go find better spots all over town
