OT: Custom Playbook Question
My custom playbook research has reached a bit of a standstill. I've been looking for a game (any system, including PC) that can create (and accurately simulate) plays that involve moving the offensive linemen to different positions. I understand the NCAA regulation for 7 down linemen on the line of scrimmage, and found it to be very restricting in the types of varieties available in games these days.
A large part of my offensive scheme involves the placement of the offensive line, including the center (or person snapping the ball). To my knowledge, there isn't a game that comes close to being able to simulate this type of movement for linemen. Specifically, I need one that would allow 2 or 3 sets of 'pockets' if you will. The closest I have come so far is the old NFL Blitz, which allowed a bit more creativity in the creation of plays, but didn't really come close to actual NCAA or NFL physics and movement. NCAA 14 for Playstation has the 'Monster' formation, which has 3 down linemen in the center and 2 sets of 2 on both ends of the field, but it doesn't have any more choices beyond the default plays.
If anyone knows of a game or simulator that would fulfill this type of function, I would greatly appreciate your feedback! I've been preparing my scheme to the best of my ability on paper, but it'd be nice to have any kind of simulation to evaluate it's realistic capabilities. I've also considered talking to a pee-wee or high school team's coaches, but realized after talking to a few others that I may end up giving the kids a very broken view of regular football fundamentals, and I should try to have something ready to present as evidence of it's functions first.
Ideally, it would be nice to have special teams play creators available too, so any other feedback on that would be welcome as well. Thanks in advance all!
Why are you talking to pee wee and high school coaches? Why not just try it out with your San Jose State offense?
With the ability to design your own plays and upload them to your PS3, a revamped Superstar Mode, a dynamic camera system, all-new commentary, and more, Madden NFL 10 PSP will bring you closer to the NFL than ever before.
With a custom play editor, players can design plays and then upload their favorites to a PlayStation 3 system to test your skills in HD contests.
Just put your fastest player at QB and snap it to him
That is an A+ OP thread upvote. A very discerning consumer indeed.
Wait. You think that there is an "NCAA regulation for 7 down linemen on the line of scrimmage, and found it to be very restricting?" I think I found your problem.
Get some fresh air
Are you a coach trying to design and implement this scheme? If so, I would recommend getting it on the field first. I'm skeptical that asking the OL coach at the University of Michigan to look at some Madden simulations will get you very far.
If you're not a coach, the odds of getting any playbook a serious look by a collegiate program are virtually nil. My guess is that getting involved with a local middle/high school team is a better starting point if you're passionate about the sport. You'd learn a lot and maybe get in the ear of someone willing to look at whatever scheme you're cooking up!
I think the idea that you are going to draw up a new scheme and present it to the coaching staff at the University of Michigan and it will see the light of day is ... unlikely.
However here is what you are looking for, I believe:
It's called Playmaker Football and we used to play it obsessively back in the 80's.
Enjoy!
Just hit enter when I saw your post! That was a great game.
Hi, not sure if the rules are strictly enforced but there was a game system that had electronic chalkboard that allows a coach to draw up plays, including options, reads, so forth (both defense and offense) and then actually run them (it also allowed editing player skills and strengths). It was called Playmaker Football and is now available on the PC and I think iPad. It was originally a Mac program. Originally created back in 1985 and marketed by Broderbund Software, it later was spun off in 1994
There is still a small but active community.
Hope this helps
Thanks for all the great feedback, I'm eager to check into all those suggestions! For anyone curious, I have actually talked to a few high school coaches, but there seems to be a lack of interest. My schemes would involve a significant blow to the fundamentals of their football understanding and development, especially if there are kids holding out for scholarships. There is significant upside (if the scheme has potential), so hopefully it can be used for good.
My desire to add my scheme to the football universe has to start somewhere, and it may be in the best interest of everyone to get in a few good simulations before I attempt any of them on real people!
Thanks again, and Go Blue!
What you are talking about is not new. The polecat, unbalanced offenses, and the swinging gate have already explored this area, not to mention the A-11 offense, which I think was banned. The rules don't allow for the kind of thing you are talking about.
