O'Korn Homecoming Article

SIAP:  Good article on John O'Korn's homecoming this week.  Apparently his mother is a waitress in State College and the whole family is from the area.

I had always thought he was from Florida (probably because he was a college transfer):

O’Korn grew up in Huntingdon, Pa., a sleepy borough located on the Juniata River just 33 miles south of State College. It’s the type of small town where people leave their front doors unlocked and everyone knows each other’s first name. They’ll have two rooting interests in this game: the Nittany Lions and the town’s favorite son.

“I’m really excited,” O’Korn said. “I know it’ll mean a lot to my family. I grew up going to a lot of games. I’m really looking forward to it.”

His mom, Paula, is a waitress at a State College restaurant and routinely has Penn State players and coaches’ wives as customers, sister Kalyn is a Penn State graduate, and the entire family is lifelong Penn State supporters. O’Korn’s dad, Gary, noted Kalyn will be wearing maize and blue Saturday.

He tried to graduate early so he could go to PSU:

Ultimately, O’Korn’s fate at Penn State was sealed by Christian Hackenberg’s commitment. The coaching staff wasn’t keen on taking two quarterbacks the same age in the same class. Fisher approached the idea of graduating early, but O’Korn couldn’t make it work.

John's best game was on the road against the coach who benched him at Houston. Maybe that made it personal?

Anyway, here is to hoping he plays his ass off for his hometown!!

I hope he plays well enough that we need to set up a GoFundMe page to make up for the tips that his mom is no longer going to get at State College.

This is what i love about college football.  No matter what happens the weekend before, I still believe the next week could be magical.  You never know when things are going to start to click.  Last year PSU came to the big house and looked liked Rutgers.  A few months later the won the big ten.  If James Franklin can get a turn around like that, harbaugh can do it too.  Go blue

....funny, I was confused between Speight and O'Korn and thought Speight was the one from PA; I was actually using "motivation against a team he grew up rooting for" as a bullet for Speight to win, but we need that extra mojo for O'Korn much much more. Penn St. fans probably won't even be that surprised, they're used to Hackenberg being the cause of their failures.

O'korn plays best out of revenge?

Now if someone can get Urban to kick his dog, they'll be all set.

pretty much suck in terms of sack prevention this year.

PSU is currently tied with Michigan ranked 101st in the nation in Sacks Allowed (16 sacks over 6 games).  This stat is probably not going to improve Saturday night. PSU has not faced a defense like Michigan's this year.

So not great Bob.

But PSU has an escape valve for McSorley -> Saquon Barkley

Michigan has no such proven escape valves.

Transitive property isn't perfect, but comparing how Michigan did against IU vs. PSU did against IU by their escape valves:

Barkley - 20 carries, 56 yards (2.8 YPC), 0TD

Higdon - 25 carries, 200 yards (8.0 YPC), 3TD

Not saying Higdon is better than Barkley by any means, but Michigan performed better on the ground with their main rushing guy than PSU did with their heisman RB.

I just hope Harbaugh and the coaching staff don't get stubborn and go right back to giving Higdon only 10-15 carries. I mean, we really don't know how much they're going to move away from the RB by committee.

We're just assuming that they'll do it to some degree. Though I believe Higdon will have to be hot right from the start to convince the coaches to use him again as our workhorse RB.

My wife and I grew up in PA. My wife met John's sister in Florida and became friends. She called my wife a few years back and said to tell me Michigan has a new qb. Jim flew to Houston and had a steak dinner with John and sealed the deal. I'm not kidding about the steak.

Hopefully the game reflects the vibes.  I also like this team flying under the radar and think PSU is over rated.  I hope Saturday doesn't change my mind....

He sure seems like has paid his dues, has been a good team player and is deserving of some good karma. I’m rooting for you John and have faith in your leadership abilities and skill. Go Blue!
