Nimari Burnett to Texas Tech

It just seems like there’s too many unknowns with Michigan basketball right now. We’re in the running for all these five stars, but have only landed one. I’m not complaining. With success, Coach Howard will get these guys
November 12th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
ONLY landed one? More than we’ve had in the past decade already.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
Was going to say the same thing. Plus if Franz were ranked by the services, he would be another borderline 5 star. So, in 5 months, Howard has brought in more top end talent than Beilein did in 12 years -- what a disaster!
November 13th, 2019 at 5:15 AM ^
I'm not ripping Howard's recruiting at all, but it's not exactly fair to call Wagner a Howard recruit.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:17 PM ^
Yeah TK, I know that
November 12th, 2019 at 3:19 PM ^
Mitch McGary anyone?
November 12th, 2019 at 3:34 PM ^
McGary was definitely the best recruit of the Beilein era. However, he was not a consensus 5 star (like Todd is)
He was a 4 star (#28 overall) in 247 composite. Another fun fact is that he was only ranked the 3rd best player in NEW HAMPSHIRE that year (behind Nerlens Noel and T.J. Warren)
EDIT: McGary was the best recruit in the sense of where he was ranked when he committed and who Beilein was competing against. In that same class, Glenn Robinson III ended up ranked higher than McGary and I believe was the highest ranked recruit of the Beilein era
November 12th, 2019 at 3:57 PM ^
None of them were actually from New Hampshire, they just transferred to big name prep schools there. It's a bit like saying Iowa produces a ton of good hockey players because there are USHL teams based there.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
I'm not complaining.
Sure sounds like you are
November 12th, 2019 at 1:18 PM ^
Nope. Just thinking about the mindset of these 5 star players and why they’re not picking Michigan.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
a 5 and 4 with Zeb. It's not like we've gotten that consistently.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:33 PM ^
And that one has a great chance to never even suit up for UM after he heads overseas.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:46 PM ^
"Too many unknowns" hits the nail on the head. So, it can't be surprising that a lot of these elite players will go elsewhere - until Coach Howard is more of a known factor. These players have a lot at risk in their choices and want to make sure they're going somewhere where they will have a good experience while enhancing their basketball skills. With the big offseason changes, Michigan basketball can't check all those boxes right now. Hopefully we will soon - starting with a win against Creighton.
November 12th, 2019 at 4:01 PM ^
Ok sure I guess I get it, but Todd is a monster...those guys dont roll through here often. Also landed Franz (not a 5 but damn good) and kept Zeb in fold (again, not a 5 but damn good 4)
Done a great job so far in my mind
November 12th, 2019 at 1:06 PM ^
Bummer but no surprise.
I'm hoping for Lander to commit and re-classify.
Todd, Dickinson, Lander, Jackson, Howard would be a pretty awesome class.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:15 PM ^
Lander and Zeb play the same position, we need a combo guard.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:21 PM ^
Considering he is listed as a SG by a lot of people, I think Zeb is pretty much a combo guard. I know most people here view him as a PG but I think he could play SG just fine.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:08 PM ^
Aw, hamburgers.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:08 PM ^
I am shocked. Shocked, I tell you.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:11 PM ^
You mean you're $hocked?? Me too, totally $hocked!
November 12th, 2019 at 1:09 PM ^
Need to get some traction under our belts. Take what you can get now, and build towards the future. Demonstrate the fundamentals.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:10 PM ^
Bummer, keep swinging for the fences though, bound to hit a couple of homeruns
November 12th, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
Lame
I really thought we would land either Burnett or Moody.
Basketball recruiting is funny. So much depends on the decisions of just a few players.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:38 PM ^
Thought we would get 1 of those 2 as well but never thought we'd end up with Todd so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
November 12th, 2019 at 1:17 PM ^
I think we all expected it. Still excited for Howard and believe he will recruit well here given time to get in on kids early in their high school careers.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:17 PM ^
As Matt D says, "$"
November 12th, 2019 at 1:20 PM ^
I mean, UM just threw himself in the Miller chase and his recruitment has been shady. Also, Todd's recruitment seemed a little...odd. Whole different world in the Top 25 compared to the Beilein recruits.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
Todd's recruitment isnt odd, it basically comes down to the fact that some of those bigtime programs weren't willing to wait and see if hes playing college ball or not. It came down to a program who has a brand new staff and a program that is looking at possible sanctions, both were willing to roll the dice.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:23 PM ^
Disappointing, but expected. As Michigan shows they will continue to compete at a high level on the court, and some of Coach Howard's philosophies that appeal to top end recruits began to show up on the court, they will come.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:32 PM ^
Sometimes I really wish I was still in the dark about how things work. Suffice to say there are things Michigan still isn't doing that they absolutely need to be if they want to battle for recruits on this level with a great program like Texas Tech.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
To me, that points more at the lack of character that family has than it does at what Michigan is or isnt doing. Howard has known the family since the recruit was little and he still goes somewhere because of incentives? Even if Howard wasnt aware of the dirty hoops recruiting, surely Saddi and Martelli could've filled him in. My only complaint so far, and the staff will figure it out, is there isnt enough offers out there and Michigan is backing itself into a corner when these kids leave you at the altar.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:56 PM ^
Juwan Howard was a member of the Fab Five, he absolutely knows what goes on. And can we stop calling these kids and their families low character because they take benefits? There's zero correlation
November 12th, 2019 at 2:24 PM ^
Call the rule stupid, unfair, biased, etc., justify it all you want, but if a rule is in place and you knowingly break it, well....
November 12th, 2019 at 3:56 PM ^
Are all people who speed when they drive low character?
November 12th, 2019 at 4:00 PM ^
You've never gone over the speed limit? You wouldn't take a little money under the table if it improved your families outlook? Who cares. Everyone is doing it, an 18 year old monetizing his most valuable and fleeting skill isnt exactly a bad thing. Good for him.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
Other than picked a school that wasn't Michigan, do you have any real reason to believe that?
November 12th, 2019 at 1:45 PM ^
Reading between the lines of what our insiders are saying. It's also Chicago area recruiting so....
November 12th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
So in other words, no?
November 12th, 2019 at 2:11 PM ^
So, in other words, do you KNOW Alabama, Clemson and others cheat? I dont have to know these teams cheat, especially when insiders who actually cover this stuff for a living, imply such things. That's what I'm basing my comments on, not that I have insider knowledge.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:38 PM ^
I actually have no reason to believe Alabama or Clemson cheat either. Personally, I think its a lazy sore loser take. Admittedly, for reasons I'm not entirely clear on, it is a bit irrational but it makes me angry.
November 12th, 2019 at 4:03 PM ^
A Clemson basketball coach literally said that was what Clemson football was doing in an FBI video wiretap.
November 12th, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
That wasn't really what this discussion was about but that is at least some evidence, so kudos. In that same case an agent testified to directly paying Michigan players too though, so we might want to be careful citing that one.
November 12th, 2019 at 10:37 PM ^
Alabama and Clemson absolutely cheat. But it's a total sore loser opinion, because EVERYONE cheats in college football.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:13 PM ^
What thing$? What can we po$$ibly do?Help me under$tand, maybe li$t the po$$ibilites...
November 12th, 2019 at 2:28 PM ^
Texas Tech has had great success recently. We have an unknown as coach. Maybe just maybe... Nimari prefers the known quantity.
November 12th, 2019 at 6:48 PM ^
What specifically is Seth alluding to?
November 12th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
Honestly, at this point I'm just hoping Todd doesnt go overseas and Dickinson signs with Michigan. Anything else is icing on the cake.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
Who amongst us would pass up a chance to live in Lubbock?
November 12th, 2019 at 4:46 PM ^
In his eyes he probably sees it as a one year move. And to go play for a team that just played for a national championship with the hottest coach in America, it's hard to blame him with or without the possible incentive$. He wouldn't be the first person in the world to move to an undesirable place for the short term based on other factors.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
We can't has nice things.
