New 2022 QB offer in Texas

Submitted by Magnus on February 1st, 2021 at 9:17 PM

Okay, I made one for the new QB offer in Ohio, so now I feel obligated to point out another new offer. Michigan offered Austin (TX) Westlake quarterback Cade Klubnik, a 6'2", 178 lb. kid with offers from Auburn, Georgia, LSU, and Texas. He's a 4-star, the #6 pro-style quarterback, and #155 overall. He accounted for 50 touchdowns this past fall (35 passing, 15 running) in Texas 6A football, which is the largest classification. He reminds me a lot of Notre Dame's Ian Book.

You are clearly not paying attention if you don't think the staff have been prioritizing defensive lineman (specifically DT's) and defensive backs (specifically CB's) in both the 2021 and 2022 class.

I'll never understand the whole, why are we recruiting a QB or RB when we need DT's? Do you expect us to field an entire team of nose tackles? Some people will complain about anything. Like people complaining about us being involved in the recruitment of two 5* RB's in 2022. If the staff were blatantly ignoring the defensive line then you'd have a point but that's demonstrably false. Why not stock up on talent? So dumb.

While DTs are pretty important to a team's success, QB is clearly the most important position (by a fair margin).  You need nice, balanced recruiting, but the number 1 priority should always be qb.   With so many transfers in today's game you can very quickly become depleted in qb depth.

I am fascinated with the geographical tendencies of these new coaches. Assuming Michigan performs well enough in fall to get them retained, I will be keenly interested in the new look classes that come in 2022 and beyond.

"The Wolverines will host the Longhorns at Michigan Stadium on Aug. 31, 2024."

This might sweeten the pot for the young man.  Return trip to Texas isn't until 2027.

Yes! This is the kid Michigan wants.  Harbaugh needs to go all in and try and get this kid.  Ewers is good but this kid is going to be better

I watched the state title game (6A, Div I, Texas' largest big-school division) between Clubnik's Westlake and Ewers' Southlake Carroll. Both are superb and Ewers is probably more physically talented, but Clubnik outplayed him. He is so steady and never loses his head, and never seems to force the ball. He just looks like a coach's dream QB in terms of the mental side.

This is just fun to watch. And it's also quite a testament to what a well-coached team that isn't necessarily more talented than their competitors can do-- Westlake does not send a lot of players to Power 5 schools (Drew Brees was the most famous exception) compared to other big schools. They're just robotically well prepared and disciplined. It's an interesting story if you dig into it (this article is 20+ years old but it's still such a great read, highly recommend: LINK)

This video is fun to watch. High school football played at the highest level.

Nope. They are anything but.

Using 247's Top 250 Texas high school player rankings:

In 2019, highest recruit was #245. Signed with Saddleback College (juco).

In 2020, highest recruit was #91 in the state. He was a small WR who signed with Cal. (EDIT: one other guy got an SMU schollie despite being an unrated/zero-star DE on the recruiting services).

In 2021, you have to go down to #141 (inside LB, Duke).

In 2022, you only have Clubnik.

All that from a team that won back-to-back state titles in 2019 and 2020.

Not a P5 factory. Not even close. They are just a winning machine.

Compare that to legit factories like North Shore. You'll find at least 12 players from there on those same lists, most of them high up enough to score elite offers from major programs.

Well, not every year, but on average it comes out to about 1 per year, and they tend to be the academic powerhouses (Duke, Cal in the list above) and not the blue-bloods but that still counts.

Those two kids (Zane Minors and Michael Taafe) who just committed to Texas this week are preferred walk-ons, not scholarship players.

What they have are highly rated high school players that land on a lot of All-State teams, but those players frequently don't have the recruiting profile you would expect because they're not the kind of athletes that get recruited by the big boys.

never said the kid from WL is a slouch but you saying Cade will be better is just farcical.  Quinn is larger, stronger, better footwork, better mechanics, better pocket presence. I live in Texas and watched Cade play all but 2 games and saw all of Quinns games but the first game of the year.  Quinn will go farther.

This will be a tough pull for Harbaugh as Klubnik is a Texas A&M legacy and Texas A&M just offered. But I think there’s a chance if Michigan wants him especially with Linguist on the staff.
