New 2019 Commit Tyrece Woods, What Numbers!

Submitted by SkyPanther on

Steve Wiltfong article/interview on newly committed Tyrece Woods (6'2", 255):

“I turned some heads running a 4.65 40 back to back and I had a 4.2 short shuttle.”

(on the decision to go to Michigan) “It was a dream come true,”

“Coach Brown and Coach Mattison expect nothing but plays to be made,”

Now locked in on having a special senior season with his college decision behind him...

Woods said he’s hit 225-pounds on the bench press 26 times. He’s a 500-pound squat guy.

“He’s a worker,” Crowell continued. “They’re getting a worker. He brings his lunch pail to work every day.”

He’s a tweener as a prospect, does he stay at end or blossom into a three technique? Harbaugh, Brown, Mattison and Washington want the opportunity to mold him and find out.

Article from WolverineWire:

“The coaches there (Michigan) were most consistent with me,” Woods said. “We never lost touch with each other. From calls to text, the coaches said they liked me, watched my film and wanted me on-campus.”

On the field, Michigan plans to use Woods anywhere from the 3 technique to the defensive end position. Then, the coaching staff will make a decision on where he fits best.

“It really doesn’t matter to me where I play,” Woods said. “I can make an impact wherever I wind up on the field. I’m an athlete; I just have a bigger frame.”

“He just said I was very underrated and can’t wait to get to work with me,” Woods said of his conversation with (2019 SDE/OT, Chris) Hinton.

The game against the Nittany Lions will be Woods’ official visit. He will not visit any other schools.

Woods will sign with Michigan in December and enroll early at the university.

“With the rankings, I really don’t care,” Woods said. “I know what I can bring to the table, which is being strong and quick off the ball. Nobody knows about my speed because I’m big.”

The key will be maintaining those numbers as he adds weight, but 255 is heavier than I thought he was (I thought someone in the committmen post said he was 225).

Yeah he was last year when evaluated. He's up to 255 now.

I work with a guy who's son is on his team, and was an assistant coach (Crawford) he said he is very, very hard to block. He said Dobbs struggles with him quite a bit and even wins his fair share of one on ones. Thinks we are getting a guy that will get a huge bump in ranking later. He's an MSU fan and is disappointed he didn't follow his other teammates.

Not only is finding these monsters by doing more than perusing ESPN's top 250 an actual sign the coaches are doing there job, but more importantly in five years we get to say "the Michigan difference took a 3-4 star and made him a first round draft pick, imagine what we could do with you..."

At DT they are still in on Rodas Johnson (CBs to Wisconsin).

At SDE they are still pursuing Karlaftis (Unless Brohm leaves he's going to Purdue).

I don't necessarily disagree on the idea that they could get Woods later in the cycle, nor do I think accepting his commitment now would mean another higher ranked guy doesn't come to Michigan because of him.

He's a big kid who, if those numbers hold up, could be a plus athlete at the tackle position.  Apparently someone compared him favorably to Kemp, which isn't a bad comp considering he's played since his freshman year and should factor more into the rotation this year as well on the defensive line.
