ND/Recruiting-Fans Grow Restless

Submitted by HAIL 2 VICTORS on
With only 2 four star recruits and losses mounting up daily Brian Kelly talks about the RKG's (Right Kind of Guys) and has expressed that he prefers kids that are hungry as opposed to the spoiled 4 and 5 star recruits. ND message boards grow restless and the most recent commit had only an offer from Toledo as a spread QB who runs a 4.8 40 time and is a 1 star on Rivals and no rank on Scout. It seems in many cases Kelly is just letting some great talent fall off the board becuase there not RKG's. Good Times! http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/01/notre-dame-loses-a-footbal…

Welcome to pergatory Mr, Kelly. Even Charlie couldn't handle the sustained pressure of the fans and the media intent on restoring a program that may not be able to ever be restored. Good luck. Good news for us though, as Rich Rod rights the ship, we look far more attractive than the Irish at this point. Go Blue.

I've always thought stars for offensive players can be a bit overrated - the determination is based on how that player would fit in a particular, somewhat-generic offense, not necessarily the one he will actually play in in college. Defense seems a bit more objective, but even then schemes play a role in maximizing a player's abilities. If Kelly wins, people won't care who he brings in. If he struggles (like he probably will for at least a year), expect to hear the murmurs.

Restless isn't the word I would use, fans are more in suspense. This is just the dramatic portion of an action movie, just building up to the movie's climax. Make sure you have your popcorn ready its about to get exciting.

Just a bunch of 3 star nobodies, =) Kelly has done a nice job staying with the higher rated guys though, still in it with Henderson, Riley, JR Ferguson and Christian Jones, though no one anywhere has any idea where they will end up, ND looks to finish in 2nd place with many of them. Of the 15 or so visitors this weekend Kelly has a great chance with the following, Derek Roback, Luke Massa, Jeremy Ioane, Danny Spond, Matt James, and now Brandon Bourbon too who was just confirmed as a visitor today. A few of them have been rumored as commits but there is nothing official yet. There are other names floating around as well, but they're the most realistic, today at least. I recommend looking up Ioane's highlight video, its pretty awesome. I am feeling generous here it is,

He has a lot of ground to make up!! I have a feeling that he will pick it up in the future. Everywhere he has left they were ranked 1st or won their last game (Title at GVSU, bowl win w/ CMU and 13-0 with Cincy). I hope we are more successful then them and if his recruiting class is this bad then we can gain even more ground on Notre Dame. Don't feel sorry, but he will figure it out.....hopefully it will take him some time.

I think you're a good poster but c'mon, an "lol" brings nothing to the table, a +1 would have been sufficient....If I "lol'd" at every post I thought was funny, Well, there would be a lot of filler coming from my end. Not trying to be a dick in the least, just saying.

It's showing he gets the joke, and isn't thinking "well, how DARE he say his 3 stars are better than MY 3 stars". There's a point to it. At least as much as all of us saying..."we like her boobs"...below.

"Brian Kelly talks about the RKG's (Right Kind of Guys) and has expressed that he prefers kids that are hungry as opposed to the spoiled 4 and 5 star recruits." Did he really say this? I hope so, because if he actually feels this way, then this year's Sugar Bowl will be a common sight when Notre Dame plays a really good team.

Kelly is going to do a good job at nd and they already have some great talent soooo. He won't have to deal with what Rich did his first year here. We have all seen what the man can do on O but can he take their D to a new level is the question?

Eh, doesn't look like one of those MAC classes that Ty the destroyer signed years back. ND's recruiting class right now is kind of like the opposite of ours - Rivals really likes them (and not ours) and scout is down on them (but likes our class). We have a better class according to ESPN though.

But that a 3* is hungry? Personally, I don't think that's a fair thing to say. It's equally possible that the 4/5* kid worked his ass off to achieve that ranking. Moreover, that 4/5* kid might have his sights on the NFL and thus keep working hard. I don't think that being a 4/5* kid comes with any actual privileges. It's just a star ranking that you get towards the end of your high school career. Not like they've spent 3 years lounging around, getting fat and eating lobster...?

He did an amazing job for Big East standards, but unlike RichRod, when Kelly finally played a good team come bowl season, he got smoked. Cincinnati played a very soft schedule, with Oregon State being the only decent team they played, and the bowl season showed us that the Pac Ten was pretty mediocre as well. Brian Kelly did a solid job at Cinci considering his recruits, he did not do an amazing job. Also, do we know anything about Brian Kelly as a recruiter? Even with the success that Cinci started to have, he still couldn't bring in any decent talent, even though he was in a talent rich area. He could have been mopping the floor with all the good Ohio kids that OSU didn't offer. I guess we did that instead.

I'd say Texas. But there's power in numbers. I didn't realize that you were required to wear floatation devices when by a pool in Georgia... Or that the average co-ed could afford them...

Well since Bruce Heggie doesn't even have an offer I don't know that there is anything to explain. Wouldn't be surprised if he is offered on the visit and if you still need a more expansive explanation as to why he has interest from ND you should read the article you linked. As for Roback he is a UC recruit, even planned to flip to UC had Kelly still been there, he does have an offer and all signs point to him being in a ND uniform next year. He has a nice highlight film in that thread btw. And actually the most recent confirmed offer was to Brandon Bourbon a Stanford soft verbal

Irish-Irish-Irish... Are you trying to tell me that even the strongest of BK supporters are not perplexed by these offers or soon to be offers? BK has pretty much ignored many of the 4-stars that were in pursuit as not being "RKG's" (including the kid out of Florida, an RB who averaged over 10 yards per carry in HS who's name escapes me) and is offering kids who's only other offers are Toledo and William & Mary who are not even ranked on the services or are one stars. Please Irish at least admit that the ND message boards are in civil war over the RKG's and BK.

ND fans are always complaining about something. Kelly could land an entire class of 5 stars and they would say he still wasn't able to fill out the class, Kelly could go undefeated and people will complain that he didn't blow enough teams out, or the schedule wasn't tough enough. Saying that ND fans are complaining about something is saying the sky is blue. Your not breaking any news here. 6 weeks ago ND didn't have a coach, 5 weeks ago ND had 2 coaches and 3 weeks ago ND finalized the staff. This weekend ND has 17 recruits coming in on OVs to fill out the last 9 slots, there is nothing to be complaining about.

Irish-FAMU Pulled Heggie's scholarshp and they see him ALL the time. ZERO division 1 scholarships other then ND. As for the QB were talking Toledo and nobody else in the state of Ohio. I understand a two star but a one star and a kid not even on the radar. Preferred walk on maybe but an ND scholarship...PANIC!

Man you're really having trouble with this.... The Toledo QB your talking about is named Derek Roback, here is his Rivals profile: http://rivals.yahoo.com/notredame/football/recruiting/player-Derek-Roba… He is still listed as a Toledo commit, now if you click on the "Show All" below that, you will see that he has more than just an offer from Toledo. That includes, the University of Ohio, Miami of Ohio, Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Marshall and Ball State. So that is 5 schools in total from the state of Ohio. Also if your still caught up in the star ratings you can see that he has 3 whole stars beside his name, which means absolutely nothing since he is very unlikely to be a QB at ND for more than 1 season. Now Bruce Heggie is not ranked by Rivals and may only have an offer from William & Mary. He is viewed by all the big name schools in Florida (even D1 schools) as a preferred walk on. He still doesn't have a ND scholarship offer and there has been no indication that he will or wont receive one; there is no evidence that Kelly doesn't also see him as a preferred walk on. To hit some proverbial panic button because Roback and Haggie are visiting ND is......foolish to put it nicely.

As he stood on the field at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium last April, Brian Kelly explained his recruiting philosophy. At Grand Valley State, Central Michigan and Cincinnati, Kelly had to zero in on the players the big boys didn't want. At one point in the conversation, these words passed his lips. "I'm not comfortable with four-star guys," Kelly said. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/andy_staples/01/22/notre… NOT THE OP's PORTRAYL-DARE TO COMMENT IRISH?

A more relevant quote after he was hired: http://www.irishsportsdaily.com/football/1589-the-brian-kelly-interview…
“I think we all know here at Notre Dame, I’ve got two hands. That means I can hold two hands here. I can’t hold anybody else’s hand so there’s not going to be a lot of hand-holding here at Notre Dame because it’s Notre Dame and that’s what’s expected. There’s going to be some guys that four and five-star guys that I’m not going to hold their hand.”
I have no problem with him not willing to stroke the ego of an 18 year old football player
