Michigan's women's varsity teams have never been called the "Lady Wolverines."  The "Lady ____" designation is very much an SEC thing (Lady Vols, Lady Tigers, etc.)

And you're right; if we did, it would be terrible.

I think Lady ___ is dumb as well, but if anyone wants to go full Wimbledon I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world. Gentlemen's/Ladies' and Mr./Ms. would be a completely ridiculous take on American sports announcing.

Hearing about Mr. McGary on M's Gentlemen's Basketball team would be hilarious, full stop.

The majority of NCAA women's teams had lady in their title (although Michigan was never one of them) until about a year ago, when they were all officially dropped.

That pissed off Tennessee and their fans protested...because they're Tennessee. But the "lady" is gone everywhere else.

So if I walk up to one of these female players or female coach I call them what?

I am pretty sure I would call a group of men's players "Gentlemen" as in:

"Excuse me, Gentlemen, I hope you crush the Terps today!"

so you would also say:

"Excuse me, Ladies, I hope you crush the Terps today!"

You would not say:

"Excuse me, Mr's, I hope you crush the Terps today!"

"Excuse me, mens, I hope you crush the Terps today!"

Most people address groups/crowds as "Ladies and Gentlemen".

is talking about how you migth address them in public or some imagined encounter. They're talking about the trite and outmoded way that some schools titled their women's teams lady this and lady that. Which was dumb.

COMPLETELY.

No one is saying you can't cheer and go "let's go ladies!!!" or address them as ladies.

They're just saying the name of the team is Wolverines. Not Lady Wolverines.

Why do people have to be so difficult?

This board has a serious problem with women. It's kind of weird. We apparently hate cheerleaders and now we apparently aren't allowed to say "Lady Wolverines".

You can say whatever you'd like.  And it won't make you 'wrong', but just like if you called Michigan "Big Blue", people will judge you.  Regarding the hating of cheerleading -- it is probably not the content that of the original post that is all that offensive.  I'm sure that several of these (young ladies/women/non-gender-specific-peoples) don't appreciate some of the objectification they recieve, but they probably also do not lose sleep over it.

I think the apprehension is more towards the sorts of conversation that posts that can construe any sort of objectification of women brings out in people protected by the anonymity of the internet.

TL;DR -- there's no serious problem that is specific to this board.  We just tread on the "better safe than sorry" line, as these kinds of debates fall right in line with religion, politics, and the Oxford Comma.

Do not know your age Olaf, but times change. Same way I couldn't believe they actually had to educate folks that calling women "sweetie" or "honey" in the workplace was inappropriate when I entered the workforce 25 years ago. I don't see the issue with "Lady Wolverines" but understand that I am an old(er) fart who may be out of touch. As for the cheerleaders - it was more of a reaction that OMG Hawt chix! threads are not a fit on this board and are almost everywhere else on the net if someone really needs to see them.

I'm not sure of a time when it was ever okay to say "Lady Wolverines." The women's teams are not "Lady Wolverines" they are "Wolverines" like the men's teams.

This comes with a caveat: I will give a pass to anyone saying "Lady Wolverines" if they also call the football team "Gentlemen Wolverines."

I guess if I'm listening to WTKA and they are announcing the women's basketball team score I would prefer to hear "Coach KBA's Lady Wolverines dominated the visiting Spartans" instead of hearing "The University of Michigan women's basketball team defeated the opponent".

Since everyone is so riled up about the whole "Lady Wolverine" thing:

Nobody has a problem with calling the female players ladies, just like no one has a problem with calling male players gentleman as one other poster mentioned. But why do we call the females the "Lady Wolverines" but not call the men the "Gentlemen Wolverines"?

Any athlete, male or female, who comes to Michigan wants to be a Wolverine. Not a "Lady Wolverine" or a "Gentleman Wolverine." Adding the term lady in front of Wolverine adds an unnecessary distinction and extra distance between Michigan and Wolverine, and to some diminishes it a bit.

It's also a redundant distinction. Every post about female sport teams, like this one or any basketball ones, are prefaced with "Women's." It's always the "Women's basketball team" and no one complains about that, because that's not an issue. The same is done for the "Men's basketball team" (hell we have an abbreviation MBB), so no once cares. But adding lady in front of wolverine is redundant and unnecessary.

Why do we need to add the lady? Why can't we just call them Wolverines? And even if we really want a gender distinction, why not call the men the "Gentlemen Wolverines?" As WH said, Michigan never officially called its female sports teams the "Lady Wolverines", so it's not like we have any history doing it.

I'm honestly really happy to read a post about a non-mainstream sport, and the success of the team. The argument over Lady being used is not (to me) about political correctness as much as it makes me cringe similar to when I see someone say "big blue." It just bugs me..not really huge enough that I'm freaking out over it...so,yes. ..thread has taken an unnecessary and distracting turn. thanks to OP for posting! Go (Big) Blue!
