Meta: McGregor vs Cowboy Obnoxious Countdown

Submitted by huntmich on January 17th, 2020 at 3:22 PM

Is there any way to block this? It's apparently getting around my adblock. I am constitutionally opposed to ads, especially active ads that block content and countdown. It's fucking obnoxious and if I can't block it I'm just not going to come here anymore.

And before you say it, I support the site through direct contributions and buying things like httv. I do not tolerate ads, at all.

It must be some new type of super-ad that bypasses the way all other ads are mapped. But, yes -- I agree that it's super annoying. The fight is also tomorrow night and it will be gone after then (I'm guessing) -- so still come here lol.

it's almost worth it to, as soon as the page loads:

right click -> inspect element -> right click the element html -> delete element

every time you open a new page

I'll let you know exactly what that is. It's a one-week thing from IMG that came through our ad network. I haven't gotten it once but Brian has, and asked me where it came from before you posted this. There's some language I haven't been able to get into the header that was supposed to fix its behavior some--you'll note we had a big slowdown yesterday while I was working on it. The click to close it box wasn't always showing up, and because I wasn't getting the ad myself it's been hard to work through that.

Anyway it's gone on Saturday. I understand where you're coming from with the ads but you should know I'm not going to put much effort into making sure ads can't get around ad blockers. Ads are by far our #1 income source--we're talking about having a version of the site without ads that you pay for by subscription but we'll always have a free site paid for by ads because that's our model.

I guess I'm too easygoing. Once I adjusted to looking at the shorter window of content I quit noticing the ad. Honestly, when I saw the title I thought the thread was about the general obnoxious advertising about the fight. I had actually forgotten the banner at the bottom of the screen.

I don't suggest this as an alternate to ads, but any chance you'll ever accept BAT token donations? I tried to send one previously and don't believe it was accepted.  I'm guessing more and more people will be using the Brave browser because it's better and safer, but be like me and want to give you the tokens.

I'm using uBlock (Origin), with Firefox. If you select 'disable JavaScript elements on this site' from the drop down menu, it'll remove it.

If you're using any ad blocker besides uBlock Origin, you're doing it wrong. Note that the Origin is key as it's from the original creator and not the corporate shills that make the other just plain uBlock.

Yeah, the OP missed an opportunity.  If he switched the word order and titled this thread "obnoxious McGregor vs. Cowboy Countdown." - then the title has TWO distinct and separate meanings!

I do think McGregor is going to win.  Which I'm fine with, because that increases the odds he gets his rematch with Khabib.  Dana certainly wants that fight, because of all the $$$$$.  And if it happens, Khabib is going to absolutely maul Conor once again.

I'd recommend Firefox with ublock origin and umatrix.  You can disable umatrix filtering for the entire site until you close your browser which will allow the voting to work, but the ads and countdown don't show up.  I've also bought HTTV the last few seasons in case anyone wants to get worked up about adblock.
