Interesting game thus far. Good to see Brandon Peters playing, even if it is for Bielema.

Watched some of the 1st quarter. Bielema has work cut out for him. MD QB missed some easy throws. But he escapes pretty good. May not work against better D

Is it me, or does Brandon Peters take more thunder sacks than any QB I can remember. It’s like every time he drops back you see a dude coming from his blind side about to devour him. Could just be bad OL play, but even at Michigan he seemed to get lit up an awful lot which also bad OL play. But at some point it’s him too.

Is it just me or is targeting no longer really a thing? It seems like they keep reviewing obvious targeting penalties this season and then on review say there was no targeting. It’s like the NCAA has decided that the whole concussion thing has blown over and they want to bring back the big hits.

That Maryland player definitely lead with and attacked with his helmet.

I missed that one. Admittedly, I was basing my comment off a pretty small sample size. Ever since they implemented the targeting rule my biggest criticism has been that I never know how the call will go upon review despite the play getting replayed over and over and the announcers repeating the details of the rule over and over. The announcers never seem to know how the call will go, either.

Actually, I agree with both calls so far. On the second call, he did lead with his helmet, but he didn't actually make contact with it. He got lucky and missed, and his shoulder caught the receiver on his (the receiver's) shoulder. It was hard contact, and at full speed it looked wicked, but ... I think it was the right call to waive it off.

Does make you wonder though. I assume Maryland isn't actively teaching its defense to lead with the helmet, but ... are coaches -- is Harbaugh -- doing enough to make it clear they should not be? Too many defensive players trying to light people up, with pretty callous disregard to what it means to hit a kid in the head, hard.

I thought the whole point was to enforce the rule even if there was no intent to force players to be more conscious of it. Following that logic, it doesn’t make sense to me to give them a pass when there was clear intent to attack with the helmet but they happened to miss.

Having said that, it certainly didn’t look like he missed and he was clearly attacking a defenseless player who was already being tackled.

The reason it looked like there was no contact was that they kept playing the replay angle where you couldn't see it. (From what appeared to be about perpendicular to the paths of the players. From that angle, it appeared that the helmets were moving in parallel and that they passed each other without touching.)

But the defender was coming in at a slight angle rather than parallel and the defender's helmet struck the receiver's helmet on the side at that angle. You see it from the other camera angle and it was clear the receiver's head snapped to the side away from the contact when it occurred. But that wasn't apparent from the perpendicular camera. If the contact was with the shoulder to the body (as the announcers claimed) the helmet would have snapped in the other direction.

You could also tell there was head contact by the way the receiver was obviously out for a second or two. He looked like a rag doll.

So, we've got 2 qbs who didn't make it for us starting for P5 schools. Even though they're horrible, I find that weirdly encouraging. I can't be the only one.

Peters now 7/20.

I don't wish him ill. I want him to succeed and I'm on record advocating for that.

But it's worth noting, because if he were doing well a lot of people would note his success as a strike against Harbaugh; I would, at the least, say that it's fair to ask questions.

He has played fine and won some good games for Illinois, but he hasn't set the world on fire. Given how much of the QB mediocrity I lay at the feet of Harbaugh, it's fair to mention that Peters has been out from Harbaugh's influence for a couple of years now. Whatever he is is him, not a distant former coach.

There are Harbaugh haters looking for a reason to blame JH for everthing.  I'd imagine them saying:

Brandon Peters playing well will cause me too say Harbaugh can't evaluate qb talent (JH shouldn't have let Peters leave version).

Brandon Peters not playing well will cause me to say Harbaugh can't evaluate qb talent (JH shouldn't have recruited him version).

Maryland driving to go up by two TDs mid-3Q to sit firmly in the driver's seat.

Fumble.

Illinois rumbles downfield. Some freshman named Josh McCray looks like Derrick Henry.

Tie game.

Football really is a wonderful game.

Great run 30+ yard run, fumble, receiver picks it up and goes the rest of the way for a touchdown. Not necessarily great football but it is interesting.
