Lloyd Carr says season is "tremendous"
In a Detroit News Web Blog, our former coach says we can have a 'great season' and we are off to a 'tremendous' start.

I love the excessive use of "we" also. Sure doesn't sound like a guy that was "forced out".
October 27th, 2010 at 2:55 PM ^
Are there still people who actually pay attention to the program who actually feel that Lloyd was forced out? I thought it was pretty widely known and accepted that he left because he was ready to leave, and that Bill Martin wanted him to coach at Michigan for as long as he wanted to coach at Michigan.
October 27th, 2010 at 2:59 PM ^
He may be referring to him being forced out of his Assistant AD position as soon as Brandon took over
October 27th, 2010 at 3:10 PM ^
Either way it's wrong. He wasn't forced out of either one.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:21 PM ^
I agree that it's wrong to insinuate anything about a Michigan man such as Lloyd Carr being forced out, but I don't see anyone just up and retiring from a $330k a year cushy job in the AD department.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:55 PM ^
and respect for the institution?
October 27th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
you don't piss off your cash cow. Carr is a tremendous fundraiser and an integral part of the school's history and success. you don't force a man out of a title only position. not to mention i don't think he was making that much in his role, though i could be wrong
October 27th, 2010 at 8:20 PM ^
Yeah, 330K a year seems high for a largely ceremonial position.

Lloyd's salary: $387,883.58
He's certainly still a resource to the AD, not to mention he was underpaid in his final coaching years. This isn't unreasonable.
All UM salaries are public info, of course.
October 27th, 2010 at 4:37 PM ^
I think he stayed on after stepping down as head coach because Bill Martin wanted him there in the interim - especially as there was going to be a AD transition as well.
How about now that all the transitions are done, Lloyd wanted to retire for real, spend his spare time focused on Motts, travel a bit, and see his grand kids?
That's what Lloyd said. So why wouldn't I believe his reasoning?
Who here wants to retire while they're still healthy and able to travel, with a long successful career with a highlight ending to look back on, with financial security, and with a meaningful side activity to stay engaged with?
Oooh: me, me!
October 27th, 2010 at 10:34 PM ^
I think it was pretty obvious (at least to me) that Carr wasn't going to be JoePa. The years leading up to 2007, there seemed to be indications that he didn't plan on staying the head coach of Michigan forever.
October 27th, 2010 at 5:01 PM ^
Lloyd Carr is 65 years old. He did the same thing that a lot of other 65-year-olds do. I don't think he's hurting for money.
October 27th, 2010 at 5:22 PM ^
People who have made close to $10 million over the course of their careers (predominantly in the last 10-15 years) and I'm sure are getting a nifty little retirement package would probably be falling over themselves to retire. I know I would. I would in my 30s, but definitely if I was in my mid-60s.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:26 PM ^
My understanding was that Lloyd nearly retired after the '07 Rose Bowl, and that Bill Martin convinced him to stay another year.
An interesting question is whether Lloyd would have remained as coach as long as Bo was living. I think the answer is that he probably would have. (Coincidentally, Michigan is 22-24 since Bo died.)
October 27th, 2010 at 5:03 PM ^
I don't think the two are related. Carr was mulling retirement as far back as 2004. I'm not sure why people have this idea that Carr somehow retired "early." In 2007, he was three years older than Bo was when he retired.

Forced out? You don't actually believe that do you? And if so I hope you weren't one of the guys calling for his head. I've always said be careful what you wish for. And here we are...

October 27th, 2010 at 2:45 PM ^
tremendous
October 27th, 2010 at 2:46 PM ^
no question
October 27th, 2010 at 2:47 PM ^
oh what the hell have i done
October 27th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^
you have done something tremendous!
October 27th, 2010 at 4:02 PM ^
Why would you ask a dumb question like that?
October 27th, 2010 at 3:30 PM ^
October 27th, 2010 at 4:24 PM ^
You forgot the "Jim"
October 27th, 2010 at 4:39 PM ^
Tremendous AND Outstanding . . .
October 27th, 2010 at 8:33 PM ^
But was it "telling"?
October 27th, 2010 at 2:47 PM ^
"The last time a guy created that much interest at Michigan as a true freshman was Anthony Carter"
Hope this is a misquote.
October 27th, 2010 at 2:55 PM ^
Or it was a slight misquote.
But yeah, I remember when AC was a freshman, and I don't think I've seen buzz like that since then, until Denard. Some will point to Hart's beginnings. Hart did have a tremendous first freshman year, but the buzz wasn't the same as with Carter. I think the difference is that with Carter, and with Denard, they are/were both electrifying, and could break out for a huge gain any time. Hart had heart, rarely fumbled, and gained lots of yards. However, he just wasn't a burner and breakaway threat in the same way as AC and Denard.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:05 PM ^
gettting to the point that Denard is not a freshman but a sophomore.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:30 PM ^
at least from those of us watching him then. When your first play from scrimmage as a back-up frosh is a fumble that's turned into a 40-yd (approx.) TD, you're buzz-worthy. Now, of course, the buzz is a full-scale swarm.
EDIT: Just re-read the article, and you quoted him correctly, but he said that no one got as much "interest as a freshman" since AC, not that Denard was currently a freshman. And Denard did indeed make us interested last season.
October 27th, 2010 at 5:14 PM ^
I was listening to that game on the radio because I was doing a trip down US-12 for my blog. I remmeber when he took his first snap and Jim Brandstetter said, "Look out for this kid" and he took it to the house, I think or something like that. I don't think we saw his full potential last year because he was used strictly as a running quarterback. Now that we've see that....wow.
October 27th, 2010 at 6:01 PM ^
And it was only later that we found out it was a broken play, which almost makes it more exciting, because he had the quickness of mind (to go along with the quickness of his feet) to make a big something out of his first mistake on his very first play as a collegian. (I didn't see it live, but at a very loud and very excited alumni sports bar.)
October 27th, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
Not only tremendous but outstanding, also.
October 27th, 2010 at 2:56 PM ^
Lloyd's use of "outstanding" is underappreciated.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:18 PM ^
Lloyd's use of "outstanding" is undertremendoused.
October 27th, 2010 at 5:04 PM ^
My head hurts...
October 27th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^
...Lloyd's enthusiasm. All indications are that his lecture circuit shtick will be positivity and he'll leave the controversial statements to others.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:00 PM ^
EDIT: Sorry, it WAS in Angelique's story. I got blinded by tremendous-ness!
In the original story:
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2010/10/ex-michigan_coach_lloyd_carr_s.html#mode_smoref_twitt
He also calls Denard a "tremendous kid!"
That's tremendous!

Do you suppose the DetNews actually flew Chengelis down to Huntsville for this story, or did she just summarize the local writer's story? I know she was in pretty good with Lloyd, and I suspect she'd have loved to be there in person if she could be.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:04 PM ^
this is a tremendous post.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:06 PM ^
What in the heck is he doing out in Huntsville Alabama? That's simply outstanding.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:08 PM ^
Show me the money!
October 27th, 2010 at 3:45 PM ^
Just in case the Alabama folks need a little preparatory hype.
October 27th, 2010 at 10:21 PM ^
I'm from Huntsville...this is awesome. Huntsville is pretty much the last place I would expect Lloyd to be. Wish I was there to see him speak instead of here in AA, studying for midterms...oh well.
October 27th, 2010 at 3:08 PM ^
I think we need to play 30 minutes of our best football in the second half if we want to win this game
October 27th, 2010 at 3:09 PM ^
Lloyd has not actually been out there the last couple of years with many positive comments. I think he probably thinks/knows that RRod is going to be around and he needs to make peace with the program under Rodriquez. I wouldn't be surprised if Brandon may have helped, as it is clear that if you want to be part of the Michigan football program Brandon will not tolerate people undermining the coach or the progam.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Brandon may have helped, as it is clear that if you want to be part of the Michigan football program Brandon will not tolerate people undermining the coach or the progam. "
When exactly has Lloyd done either of those things?
October 27th, 2010 at 7:31 PM ^
There has to be some negative slant.

And your position on Brandon is laughable. Who do you think Brandon is closer with- Rich, or Lloyd? Brandon probably has the job in part because he's tight with Lloyd and I'm sure came highly recommended by him. It's not like Brandon hasn't been around for years in one capacity or another.

A positive article about the current program from a Michigan icon.
