Let's say for the sake of argument that Burke does leave...
As Brian recently posted, that leaves Michigan with the possibility of Della Valle, Albrecht, and some as-yet unknown candidates. Sam Webb has mentioned the possibility of someone using the graduate transfer rule to join Michigan from another school, but he hasn't come up with any names.
Am I missing anything? Does anyone have a reason to be optmistic about Albrecht given that he apparently has no scholarship offers? How about Della Valle, who is apparently more of a two guard? Is there some unhappy PG who's already graduated from Alabama Tech who has a year of eligibility left and who can really handle an offense?
As for Stauskas, I know people are going to mention him, but the kid just isn't a PG, is he? I'd like to be wrong.
No let's not do that.
i don't see a question here, but if you intended to ask "will we have a good point guard next year without burke?" the answer is: no.
None of the questions I posted were intended to be rhetorical. I'm hoping people know something that I don't.
Then the 2nd round of the NBA draft just added another quality PG.
I think he goes undrafted.
If you're not sold on these three possibilities without Burke next year your other option is:
You're supposed to say, "I really like Albrecht, and in fact he has offers from _____." Or you could say, "What about that really good PG from _____, who has already graduated but who has a year left? I hear he likes Michigan."
I reject your answer.
We're fucked
If he does, someone really persuasive is giving Michigan players horrendous advice regarding their draft prospects. First Morris, now Burke? Stupid.
According to the front page someone has told Burke that he will be in the 25-30 range. That is marginal 1st round status.
I bet he falls outside the 1st round much like Morris did last year.
This person is called an agent and he does not have Trey's best interests at heart.
Isn't it a report created by the NBA and their scouts? The league obviously wants talented kids to declare but at the same time they're not hurting for players like Trey Burke. I'd say the range he received (if that really is the range they gave him) is a fair projection.
comparing evaluations with eventual draft positions. On its face I'd expect them to try to give accurate projections. I don't see what the league has to gain by encouraging undergraduates into the draft that they can't use, but it'd be nice to not have to guess.
It actually says "20-35" which isn't even a guarantee of the first round.
i'm guessing 60 kids get at least a 20-35 grade.
Probably not 60, but the sentiment is accurate.
I don't even think Morris gets drafted if this class came out last year.
This seems like a possibly different case. Trey got a grade that neither Manny nor Darius got. I'm not sure I buy it, but it doesn't really matter does it? He may very well be maximizing his value going now.

If you really leave @ Trey_Burke3 I hope you tear both your ACL's next year.. You're an idiot. Youre just going ride the bench next year
adding those two (who are both flawed but can handle it) keeps us in the top 25, I think. Say goodbye to dreams of final four contention, though.
In any case, Big Ten Geeks pointed out that the last time Wisconsin didn't have a point guard they won thirty games. Point guard: optional at Wisconsin.
I'm am intrigued by this no-PG offense and would like to subscribe to Wisconsin's newsletter.
does anyone have any idea what they ran/who their primary ballhandlers were?
http://www.coachesclipboard.net/BoRyanSwingOffense.html
The fundamental difference between this and the sets Beilein prefers is that Wisconsin is trying to post people up, while Beilein likes to keep the lane clear and plays for back cuts and threes. What they have in common is that, at least in theory, the four outside players rotate through all four positions (or sometimes it's five players rotating through all five).
You can run these offenses in the half court without a designated point guard. But you have to be able to get the ball up against pressure and you need someone to handle when you run unless you never want to run.
This year's offense was heavy on the high ball screens and thus point guard dependent, something Beilein chose to do because he had a quality point guard. But the sets he's mostly used in the past are derived from offenses like the shuffle where the four outside positions (and in some cases all five) are interchangeable. Once you get the ball up the floor, they're more or less pointguardless, a lot like the stuff Wisconsin runs.
I think we'll see a lot more grinding through the skin and the shuffle etc. next year, and I think it'll be more effective than people expect.
Considering the recent investments in the basketball facilities & increase in ticket prices (perhaps in anticipation of a coming dynasty), I sense one very panicked Dave Brandon following Trey around campus doing a good bit of groveling. Which, for pure entertainment value, I'd love to watch.
Not making the argument that these investments & pricing decisions were predicated on Burke (renovations pre-date Burke), but one has to assume DB sees the enthusiasm getting sucked out of the fanbase if we lose Burke.
No enthusiasm=fewer sales; fewer sales=sad DB; sad DB=dead drifters.
Enthusiasm=sales; sales=happy DB; happy DB=fewer dead drifters. So, for the sake of Michigan's drifters, I hope Burke stays.
Hopefully it doesn't come down to Edible Arrangements. That'd be a clear reason to leave, in and of itself.
Having seen relatively little tape, I still hope GRIII gets some looks as a point forward type. I thought his handle looked as good as anyone on the roster. I'm sure Stauskas will get some looks, but I thought GR looked better. In any case, I definitely don't buy the idea that we have to have little dudes at the 1. You just need enough handle and decision-making skills.
I'd rather not.
What matters is if he would have grown beyond what he'd be projected to by NBA scouts by sticking around another year. NBA talent evaluators assume 19 year olds will get better. Beilein's a great coach, but Trey's certainly shown he's incredibly self motivated and driven to improve.
Senior from Iona, 13.6 ppg, 9.9 apg, 5 rpg. Draft stock is not too high. A year of high major basketball could boost his stock.
Did he already graduate? Do you know him? Can you make him promise to come to Michigan?
I'm kidding about those last two...sort of.
SOMEONE GET ON THE LINE WITH THIS SCOTT MACHADO GUY!!!!!
: Is Scott Machado there?
YES SIR!
I hear you play the point and have some eligibity left!
How's this for you coach?
Ann Arbor is this way son!!!
ED: Looks like this kid played all four years so he wouldn't have any eligibility. Any one year rental would have to have been redshirted for a year.
First he should get on the phone with Burke and sell him on returning. But yeah, that's not a bad backup option (even though I hate the rent-a-senior rule).
but that'd be some real basketball-culture shock, coming from a team that plays like Westhead's Marymount teams to play in Beilein's offense.
It'd be a good career move for him--show some versatility that I don't think the nba thinks he has.
I still have a year of eligibility left and I played ball in high school.
Can't wait for the open tryouts to take place. I think I'm going to make the team as the starting point guard.
I'll be pulling for you. How will I know which one is you?
Albrecht is a reach at best, it would seem. Dell Valle may be "more of a two guard" but I'm not sure that would stop them from trying him out if he came.
I don't see much other choice.
McGray won't change his mind, right? If that happens, someone needs to step in and find out what Belein is saying to these kids.
There needs to be a 3-yr rule. The vast majority of kids leaving early are physically ready and those few that are, most likely aren't emotionally ready. Bad for college hoops and doesn't help the NBA either.
as they say in Germany.
per twitter:
@ju5ticehayes: S/o to my dude @Trey_Burke3 in declaring for the NBA.!! Go get that bread!!!!!!!!!!! Haha.. First on in our class_!
I guess its a good thing I have Akunne on my fantasy team.
@NStauskas11: Lol... I was about to leave the gym, but after hearing this news... Guess its gonna be another hour of ball handling.
he may be our best option
