Future Away Games

Submitted by WestQuad on December 23rd, 2018 at 12:10 PM

I am of the opinion that the CFP causes teams to schedule more regular season patsies and takes away from the importance of the regular season.  I just looked at our non-conf schedule a few years out and we've got some great games scheduled showing once again that Michigan gets football.  Which games are you most excited about?   What games will you travel for?

2020  Sept. 5th at Washington
2021  Sept. 11th Washington
2022: Sept. 10 vs. UCLA
2023: Sept. 2 at UCLA
2024: Aug. 31 vs. Texas
2025: Sept. 6 at Oklahoma
2026: Sept. 12 vs. Oklahoma
2027: Sept. 4 at Texas

I went to the UCLA and Washington games back at the turn of the century and they were great stadiums/experiences despite the Ls.  Rosebowl tailgating was great and Washington's stadium was gorgeous/magical.

Seeing UofM vs. Texas in Austin would be incredible.  It's only 8 years away.

I just booked my PTO for 9/23/2027, let's go!

In all seriousness, if these games were next year I would absolutely go to any of them. But who the hell knows what I'll be doing by the time these roll around.

I still want to see LSU and Clemson before I die.

They have to be the biggest programs left that we've never played.

And Georgia.  We've played them only twice, with each team winning one, but that was before my time.

I had those four games on my schedule for 3 years now.  I will be there.  I have season tickets and try to make one away game per year.  Alas, this year was not in the cards.

i'm more intrigued by texas and oklahoma than washington and ucla mainly because the Big 10 Pac 10/12 rivalry has some history to it.  texas and oklahoma are teams michigan has seen fewer times plus oklahoma is an offensive juggernaut which i'd like to test the defense against.

I want to go to all the away games but the Washington game is the most intriguing. I love Seattle and the food is amazing. If I can get reasonable tickets I will surely go to that one.

Living in Portland, I’ve had the @UDub game circled on my calendar for years. Plan on meeting up with some friends from the Class of ‘09.

We’d like to secure a boat for sail-gating if at all possible. I’m hoping there are rentals available. If anyone has any info on those logistics let me know!

I plan on being at the Michigan v Washington game in 2020.  Oldest daughter is moving to Seattle next year for work and has been instructed to secure our family tix.

Because we are stupid. I really love opening at home and getting that first taste of the football season from the stands. It didn't feel like football when they played away at ND this year. I think they should always schedule the tomato can for the first game to get warmed up and while everyone is excited to see the team again.

There is literally no upside to playing these types of games. Even if we would have beaten ND this year we still would have had to run the table to get into the CFP this year. So really what the hell is the point in this other than it shows we are arrogant and stupid and makes the margin of error zero the rest of the season if you take an L. The B1G is only getting better and the CFP has shown they don't value SOS. Alabama signs the #1 ranked recruiting class every year and even they stopped playing tough OOC road games. I hope Warde gets us out of as many of these games as possible.

Fair point, but bear in mind that there’s a strong chance the playoff expands before too long. It’s hard to believe that 1 or 2 power conferences will put up each year with getting left out.

Once conference champions are guaranteed a spot, none of this matters.

I could not disagree more.  You represent the NFL-ization of college football.  All exhibitions, and playoffs.

Apart from both wanting Michigan to win the games that are on the schedule, I expect that we have little in common.

Well we have some quality opponents who naturally will only take us on a home-and-home basis.  So those are the few out of conference games we have.

We will also get Arkansas State, Ball State and Middle Tennessee, along with 2 games stil TBD in 2021.

The Michigan Athletic Department runs on a rather strict model of need 7 home games to provide the Athletic Department (and the merchants of Ann Arbor) with the revenue they have come to expect.

It isn’t what I want.  I want more home-and-homes with quality programs.  Which would lead to more 6-game home schedules.  My season tickets are worth more when we have home games with teams like Texas, Oklahoma and UCLA than with a Delaware State. More fun, too.  And best of all, the chance to see Michigan play historic powers on the road.

For tv watchers, it might not matter so much; they may be focused on what needs to happen for Michigan to position itself for a playoff.

I would much prefer buying tickets to 6 great games, instead of buying tickets to 7 games where 2 of the 7 are tomato cans.

Exactly!    Even for tv watching this matters.   I'd much rather see Michigan play Texas, Oklahoma, Washington and UCLA than Arkansas State.    I didn't even know there was an Arkansas state until a couple of years ago.  I can sort of see an up-and-comer like UCF, but despite their lofty ranking this year, they are not a good team and it isn't fun to watch no matter how hard they hit.

I'd much rather be 10-3 having played Oklahoma, ND and [Colorado] for the non-conf than 12-1 (out of the playoff) having played Delaware State, Arkansas State and Ball State.   Of course I'd love 13-0 against the tougher schedule.

This is an incredibly stupid post. The B1G is already a gauntlet and asking our players to play this type of OOC schedule on top of that is not fair to them or our coaches. Moreover there is no schedule equity in college football. Since moving to a 9 game conference schedule the B1G has been left out of the CFP every year. SOS has shown not to matter. Going 10-3 and not winning championships isn't fun. You think the ND game was fun this year? Please. You know what's fun, winning the B1G and making the CFP. That's fun. UM should be doing everything in their power to give them the best possible chance to make the CFP every year. Anyone suggesting otherwise is just flat out stupid.

Ya well this schedule so t stand! I bet we move off some of these games for lesser Competition. I can see us dumping one of the Oklahoma or Texas, and one of the UCLA and Wash series.

I will be at the Texas game in '27, God willing and the creek don't rise!

Of course, they may yank any of these games away like the Arkansas game this year. Think of how that narrative could have gone this year; beat an SEC team and have no losses going into The Game...

What are you talking about?  Michigan @ UCLA was a miserable experience.  Our hyped starting QB, Henson, was injured.  We played like shit for most of the game.  It was 110 degrees and players were totally gassed.   Navarre was more led-footed than usual, and threw a Devin Gardener-like bad interception that sealed our fate. Navarre’s performance that game also started the divide in our fan base that either loved Navarre because he had a strong arm and had great stats and was super reliable or hated Navarre because he was great against cupcakes, but was super immobile  and couldn’t win big games.

Aside from the Texas v Michigan Rose Bowl (which was actually a super exciting game except for the ending), this was the most disappointed I ever felt after going to a Michigan Game in person.

I would probably do UCLA on the sole basis of having quite a few relatives in the Los Angeles area and therefore having the prospect of free lodging for a few days plus transit to the game if I can secure sufficient tickets. I would be interested in going to Seattle again too - was there once years ago, but not for a football game.
