Dior Mathis says two new schools has emerged as his leader.

Submitted by bluebloodedfan on
It seems that Mr. Mathis likes Oregon a bunch and is developing a crush on our little brother. At least, that is what I've heard. Maybe Other Brian or TomVH can correct me if I am wrong. Here is my thing, I think that we should recruit instate. I really do. I love seeing the home grown playing in the big house. But I must admit, I am growing a little weary of this kid. It is like he thinks he is the Otter version 2.

You're an idiot if you think that and also come across as condescending. This is a college football blog in early July (lots of nothing to talk about). But you're right, ever since RR came on board, where us Michigan fans once agreed we now can't see eye to eye on anything. I still don't understand why fans of other schools visit this site. But very well, have fun with it.

Bad performance on the fields breeds bad moods. This predates the RichRod era. If you went to a Michigan message board after the losses to App State and Oregon there were lots of unkind words exchanged amongst unhappy Michigan fans.

about Nick Hill, from what I heard his camp was not good at Michigan. If the reason Michigan has cooled on Mathis is because of his camp, then you are probably right about him too. I don't find this insulting, I am ok with State having players fall into their laps.

I think the system RR is running has led to talented players to be over-looked, or not offered. So if you are asking if I am alright with MSU getting players that Michigan is not offering than yes, I am quite alright with it. I understand the history of Michigan football, but if the RR experiment fails, local kids will grow up a fan of whatever team is winning when they are younger. Hopefully that will be MSU.

*I am ok with State having players fall into their laps.* The kill shot...State is owning instate recruiting. Can't tell me that won't be said. That seems to be the rally call. Suuuure your winning the instate recruitment. However when the pipeline dries up...what is next? What area of the country could sparty pull a rabbit out of its butt?

You act like Nick Hill wasn't scouted fully. As if the Michigan coaching staff had never seen anything on him before and was basing their offer decision on his performance at camp alone. The coaches formulate an opinion of a kid and whether or not he is the player they want at Michigan. Occasionally players show, in person at the camps, that they have improved off of the tapes or that the tapes don't fully show their skill set. Michigan obviously had some concerns, which were then verified at the camp. Therefore Nick Hill didn't receive an offer. He seems to be a good kid with his heart in the right place, however if every kid that grew up loving Michigan was given a scholarship I would be sitting in the trainer's room with broken appendages and a bruised body instead of at my computer. Would you be as excited about a "Sandler for 3" commitment to State?

that your opinion is framed in the most negative light possible. You should try cheering up a bit - it makes being a fan a lot more fun when you aren't so concerned about objectivity. Anyways, there is no solid evidence to suggest either of us are right. The timeline and surrounding circumstances favor my stance, though. He didn't impress at camps, Avery committed, and we are in on a number of comparable or better DBs. I guess it could be coincidence that he suddenly cools on us regardless of these circumstances, it's just not as likely.

Are camps really that good of an environment to judge these recruits? It seems like lately we have been making lots of decisions based largely upon camp performance.

I'd say they are a pretty damn good environment to judge a recruit. Much better than highlight tapes that only show the good plays and questionable competition. Even though it may not be a game experience, the kids are matched up against more even competition and the coaches can see how they do play after play.

can it? Can you even think of a better method? I suppose the staff could attend every game of every prospect and take copious notes... But yeah, the high pressure placed on recruits to shine in front of the head honchos in a controlled environment is pretty much the best case scenario in terms of evaluating skills. That's not to say it should be the only metric - a recruit could be sick or have a bad day - but it should certainly be the most important metric. Some kids post great/shitty numbers due to factors outside their control - weak competition or a terrible OL that doesn't allow them to gain solid yards. Camps place the most talented high school players against one another and thus are very useful to see how they would do in a high pressure environment - like having 100k+ people watch you.

Michigan State has as much national pull as any other average football program. Sure sparty land will pull a few average recruits from out of state and maybe a few from out of the region but in reality, asserting that Michigan State is a national recruiting contender is like saying Paula Abdul is not an alcoholic..a blatant lie..also the fact that you are fine with Michigan’s scraps is slightly amusing to me. That recruiting strategy is like going to a high school party with your “older brother” and finger blasting the girl that was either too fat, too drunk, or too ugly to warrant your brother's services..I for one, with my pride in mind, would prefer not to take scraps on principle alone.

recruits Michigan over-looked end up producing big numbers and help in defeating Michigan, I will be very satisfied. Much like when the younger brother begins constantly banging the hottest chick in school, because word has gotten around that he is the best.

im not sure what your high school experience was ilke but usually having a repuation as the best finger fu*cker on campus does not lead to rampant sex with the schools best looking women..

LOL. I actually LOL'd. It's funny how he has accepted that MSU is little brother. He no longer fights it tooth and nail and instead tries to come up for how a little brother is better. Well you'll die first!

F’n figures! The one position we need (along with DT) and nobody has commited yet. But then again I’d rather them look somewhere else than commit and then decommit.

Thats assuming Rich Rod does not know how to recruit and thinks good players are not worth going after. Its one thing to win a recruit head to head but to be satisfied with sloppy seconds is just retarded.

we can do if he likes other schools better than michigan. I would rather have a Courtney Avery, who committed soon after he was offered. That tells you he wants to be a part of Michigan...Not that Mathis doesn't, but its nice to see recruits that love michigan As for what school's recruiting strategy is better, we will see on the field in a few years.... My guess is that Dior is just pissed that Devin Gardner caught that pass one handed after dior fell at a camp..lol

The Mathis ship sailed when Avery signed on. Cullen has one locked for when he pulls the trigger. There are a couple of Florida kids lined up for the other spot. Just my speculation, but I think that Dior was probably given the opportunity to commit before Avery, and when he didn't....... Dior isn't going to get the slot above Christian and/or the Florida kids. Talent outweighs local kid/pipeline school. Can't blame the coaching staff if that's the way they see it.

Maybe I am the only on who thinks this, but isn't Dior Mathis a little overrated? He isn't a standout at his position or anything. Prospects like Dior are a dime a dozen.

MichFan1997

July 2nd, 2009 at 5:49 PM ^

about getting him or not. We have plenty of options for his position. Honestly, I don't think people would think twice about landing him or not if he was from out-of-state. EDIT: for the record, I do hope we end up adding him to the class with Christian and maybe one other.

Yeah, by definition Michigan men choose to play football for Michigan, this is an important factor we should consider in recruiting. Thanks for the observation, it'll get us really far.
