Corum is having knee surgery

Submitted by matt1114 on December 1st, 2022 at 2:27 PM

Sources: #Michigan star RB Blake Corum is expected to have knee surgery and is out for the season. The Heisman candidate should make a full recovery. He tried to play last week vs. Ohio State but his knee made it impossible.

WILL BE THAT MUCH SWEETER when Michigan wins it all. Heads up. Onward! This team has lots of good players. Beat Purdue then heal up and rest up for the semi finals!

Would feel much worse for our playoff hopes if Donovan wasn't here. I think he is good enough to keep us dangerous. That said, his isn't Blake and this definitely changes things for our offense.

Wishing you the best Blake. Hope you come back even stronger.

What a bunch in the balls for a Michigan fan this week. Does OSU put a curse on UM after our domination? Loss of Colin, Mazi going through that stuff and now Corum. Michigan can never ride the momo, man! Most importantly, hope Blake the Great can get healthy.

This is not the news I expected to see.  He must have a torn meniscus or something slightly less serious than a ligament because he could still move OK on it.  Sucks hard.

This is why you have to enjoy every moment of the season. It's been a pleasure watching this fine young man represent this school on and off the field. His tenacity and athleticism are incredible and I'm so sad I didn't enjoy watching him juke guys out of their pads more than I did!

Who knows if he will be back but damn...I'm going to miss watching that kid on the field if he is done in college.

Would you say this is a fair assessment of Michigan with Blake vs. Don?

They are both really good but different type of backs. Corum is best when he's running between the tackles, finding small holes and then breaking through contact and dragging defenders extra yards with his massive legs. Of course he has speed so when he gets a clear hole he's gone, but what Michigan has done all year is use Corum to bust through the middle for moderate gains.

Watching Edwards for 2 years, he's definitely more finesse. He often dances around at the line of scrimmage looking for a hole which means he gets stopped for short gains a lot more than Corum does. Michigan's offense has been to get good yardage on first down setting up manageable 2nd and 3rd downs. Or if passing on 1st down and throwing an incompletion, feeling confident in getting chunk yards on 2nd and 3rd down by running. Not sure they'll be able to do that as well without Blake. However Edwards in space is lethal. Much bigger passing game option when there's no cast on his dominant hand and pretty much explodes when he finds an opening which we saw last week. So yeah he's really good but Michigan will likely have to alter their offense a bit to adjust to a different type of back.  More pitches and outside runs, more screens and dump offs.  Less "we could run in virtually every situation even 3rd and 10"

Reasonable take.

Corum makes micro-cuts that nobody else can, that find small holes that his legs then power through.

The result is most evident on first down runs.  He's usually good for 3+ yards.  He seldom gets stopped at the LOS.

We lose this without him.

Edwards is more dangerous when he is through the hole, but he doesn't create holes, cracks really, like Corum does.

This will hurt against a strong DL like Georgia.  It just will.

So yes, the offensive game plan will have to adjust. for this.  We can't play in a phone booth quite the way we would like if we had Corum.

At least we know now and have multiple games to adjust.

Nope. Not having it. Sucks that he’s out. Feel for him.

But OSU won a title with their THIRD STRING qb. Edwards is a good damn back and can do stuff in the passing game Corum can’t.

Screw this woe is me stuff. We’re winning the whole damn thing.

I'm holding out hope that the "out for season" part is speculation and nothing concrete.  If he has his procedure within the next day or two, then it's possible that the procedure is minimally invasive and improves the 4-5 week prognosis at the expense of losing him for the B1G game.  But if we find that the surgery is delayed much beyond that timeframe, that's the sign that he's done.

We should be able to beat Purdue without Corum (assuming the Don is good).  TCU might even be beatable without Corum.

Have to admit that this news really caught me off guard.  Given the fact that he tried to suit up this week and the diagnosis of a bone bruise, I was not expecting to hear "surgery/out for the season".  I thought his health would be in question all the way up to 12/31 but that he'd play and be productive.

Get well soon Superman !  Thank you for an incredible Heisman type season.  One of the all time greats at Michigan, and by all accounts a great person whom everyone affiliated or associated with is very proud of.  God speed and full recovery Blake.

Donovan Edwards will step up. Dude is a tremendous talent and should be fine. Hopefully his hand is healed soon but the cast leads me to believe we’re looking more at a couple months. OL is making holes. Stokes isn’t seeing them yet but DE is and he’s extremely fast.

That’s disappointing. Corum is a heck of a back and a great leader. He carried this team on his back most of the season. Get well soon!

Hoping Balas’ suggestion that he’s  convinced Blake might be back in time for a potential National Championship was true but it seemed more like hope than tangible evidence.

Situation is quite fluid, which is why there have been back-and-forth's. I definitely wouldn't say there's no chance he's back for the NC.

It'll become much more concrete tomorrow after the surgery as some people have alluded to, not necessarily to us if nothing is reported, but to Blake and his family at least.
