Buckeyes lose bowl, finish 6-7. First <.500 season since 1988

Submitted by markusr2007 on

The Ohio season is finally over. 6-7 finish topped off by loss to a mediocre Florida squad 17-24.

2011 counts the first losing record for Ohio football program since 1988 (John Cooper 1st year) and 1966 (Woody Hayes) before that.

No championship and no bowl next year for Ohio, so only role to play appears to be "spoiler" in 2012.

Thoughts?

From ESPN:

Record-setting: Ohio State finishes 6-7 to suffer its first seven-loss season since 1897, when it went 1-7-1. The Buckeyes had the longest stretch without a seven-loss season in the FBS by 78 years. The next-longest stretch had been Florida State (1975). Ohio State also has its first four-game losing streak since 1943.

about the bowl ban next year.  On the one hand, it takes the pressure off and lets Urban concentrate on installing his offense and reloading the team for 2013.

On the other hand, really?  We passed up a decent bowl next year for THAT?   Really?

F*ck Jim Bollman and the fish bucket he rode in on.

that the pressure is off. Any weakness Meyer shows next year is going to be a signal for open season. And all the teams you've been beating up for for years are going to see their chance.

A couple of bad losses and the mystique is broken. We're familiar with this.

Meyer has to win right away

There is no way the pressure is off Meyer - people saw with RR how expectations that fall short can spiral out of control, and the Columbus faithful don't strike me as particularly patient.  Coupled with the fact that the team is losing some real talent on both sides of the ball, it will be interesting to see how well Meyer is received if they lose 4-5 games next year, especially if they are against some of the power teams in the conference.

As for the bowl ban, I'm amazed they didn't take it this year when they saw the offense in spring game.  There was no way that a good bowl game was in the future, so why not give up on the game this year and have a chance next?

I still expect the Buckeyes to win 8 games next year, but Meyer is going to have some growing pains, and it will be interesting to see how well-received they are after this season.

problems stem from a) inheriting personnel who didn't fit into his offense, and b) serious issues on defense stemming from conflicts between the position coaches and the coordinator?

OSU actually isn't losing that much talent on defense.  Unless Simon leaves, the entire front 4 comes back, plus Nate Williams had a medical redshirt, so the pass rush should improve.  At linebacker, Andrew Sweat is the only major contributor leaving.  The only loss in the secondary is 15th year senior Tyler Moeller.

I agree that it was stupid to reward this year's seniors with a bowl.  90% of their adversity was self-imposed.  Idiots.

I figured Simon was leaving, and Posey is a major loss for a WR core that had some problems (though they are young, so I'm guessing they will improve).  Plus, Miller does look like a better fit for Meyer's offense compared to what RR inherited.

RR's two big problems stemmed from a lack of talent at some positions, but mostly a failed defensive scheme.  People rewrite history to act like that offense he ran with Threet and Sheridan was the worst ever, but it was competent against average to average+ defenses.  OSU's offense this year wasn't much better, and they had far more talent.  The problem was that this veteran defensive unit had little direction and even less talent/will/desire/coaching/whatever to really protect the young offense throughout the season.  Beyond the Wisconsin game, it was a unit that failed to stop anyone, and while part of that can be traced back to RR and the staff woes, it also seemed like a unit without much motivation.  That might come from up top, but I also have to believe that some of those players gave up on RR relatively early on, and it showed.  I know, Lloyd Carr and the stories, etc.  Nothing to get into here.  But yes, some of the problems were self-inflicted, and Meyer steps into a better situation in terms of talent and (presuming he retains most of the defensive staff or finds a competent replacement) coaching.

All that said, next year probably won't be that pretty in Columbus.  Miller looks like a talent but at the same time, he also looked lost at times against a mediocre Florida unit.  He's a hot-and-cold player right now, and Meyer's offense is sufficiently complex that there will be more growing pains.  And without a Tebow or Alex Smith-type veteran talent at the helm, Meyer's offenses have not been nearly as dynamic.  So I'm guessing there will be a couple of games where the defense will need to keep them in games, and as we saw this year that can be a mixed bag.

I still figure OSU will be good, but like UM people don't expect OSU to stumble through multiple growing seasons.  This year, while somewhat positive in terms of player development, seems a bit wasted - the new coaching staff will install its own schemes and preferences, and I'm guessing that will necessitate an un-learning of this year's (and really Tressel's) schemes.  I expect that OSU will be back to challenging for B1G titles and BCS bids soon enough, but some of the pie-in-the-sky claims from posters at other sites of how the bowl ban will preclude them from playing for the MNC seems silly to me.

losses since 1897. There's always next year.......oh wait. I will be loving every minute of the bowl ban next year especially given that they have a very easy non-conference schedule and most of the big games they play at home.

they finish 11-1!

Sheriff of Nottingham: Locksley! I'm gonna cut your heart out with a spoon.
Guy of Gisbourne: Why a spoon cousin? Why not an axe?

bowl game ban is a crock of sh**!

Is the one game for tattoo-gate or for playing last year's bowl game with ineligible players?  They got at least one free pass in the deal.

Ugh....don't effin' get me started!

They were really happy in Columbus when Michigan's bowl and winning season streaks ended in 2008.  Now, even Buckfans who ignore the games they vacated won't be able to brag about either streak anymore, because they are now 6-7 and they won't be going to a bowl next season.

They richly deserve every negative consequence caused by their ten year pattern of cheating.

They've been kind of irrelevant the past couple of years (0-1, 6-7) and now with this bowl ban it doesn't look like they will be much of a factor in the B1G next year, either.
