Garnder doesn't exit

Probably Funchess. Has DG said whether or not he's going to enter the draft/continue to play football?
December 10th, 2014 at 2:33 PM ^
Wouldn't it kind of be a no brainer if you had the athletic talent? Seems like you would give it a shot so you don't have to look back and ask "what if" and earn a nice nest egg even if it is a year or two.
If he is smart with the money, he decides football is not for him at that level after two years and maybe he has $1-2 million and goes to work on his PHD or into Social Work where he will make $30,000 a year.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:38 PM ^
Normally I'd agree, but the guy got beat to shit the last two years so maybe he's just sick of it.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:42 PM ^
the announcers tell me that all the kids want to be wr's these days because you get all the glory and the defense isn't allowed to hit you anymore.
December 10th, 2014 at 3:40 PM ^
I love Charlie, but he spent almost 15 years holding a clipboard. Don't tell me DG isn't good enough to at least do that.
December 10th, 2014 at 6:44 PM ^
He's not a good quarterback.
Excellent young man, solid athlete, had some amazing games at quarterback...but he's not a good QB.
Hoke, excellent man, solid DL coach, had some amazing moments at Michigan...but he's not a good power 5 head coach.

I understand your point. UofM has pretty consistenly had the highest rated School of Social Work according to US News. An MSW from the #1 school might get him double the $30K you mentioned. It's not great, but it's not peanuts, either. My Dad got his MSW from UofM and put three kids through UofM.
If he can get a look from an NFL team, he'd be better off financially going that route. I don't remember being that impressed by his skills as a WR, but if he focuses on that, perhaps he could latch on as a 3rd or 4th WR.
I wouldn't draft Funchess in the first round. Maybe not even in the second. I'd want to know what happened to him between the ND and Ohio State games first before making that pick.

Wins are just a statistic.
December 10th, 2014 at 3:43 PM ^
That offense was a disaster so GMs may give him a break on that. If he goes out there and has one of the top 40 times at the combine, he'll be a 1st round pick. If he's too slow or doesn't work out at the combine at all, then he may fall anywhere between the 2nd and 4th rounds.

$60k a year isn't great? Being in the top 0.19% of all wage earners in the world isn't great!?
December 10th, 2014 at 4:30 PM ^
December 10th, 2014 at 6:11 PM ^
Not great compared to the NFL sure, perhaps I miss-read what ST3 was saying. I initially read it as $60k salary is in itself not great, which is far from the truth.

Lemme know when the field of social work solves an actual problem first.
December 11th, 2014 at 1:05 AM ^
The state of Michigan was transporting prisoners to a courthouse 60 miles away for their motions to be heard. The state had to rent busses, pay drivers and security guards to make the trip. A social worker (I bet you can guess who) worked through the regulatory system and with the various unions to change the system such that the judge and a few court officials made the trip to the prison instead. The savings to the state was around $300K annually, but you go ahead and continue making ignorant statements about social workers.
December 12th, 2014 at 12:13 AM ^
That's what you mean by problem solving? Sheesh. You're a creature of the State. Without it you don't exist.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:57 PM ^
Nope.
The HIGHEST paid professor in the school of social work made about $178,000 last year.

I think both are a half-step slow to be classic NFL WR's, but DG has shown, time and again, that he is supremely motivated. I think he would find a way to get open and find a way to catch the ball. I don't know if we can say that about Funchess yet. There is also the chance that the NFL has "adjusted" to Jimmy Graham and other WR's with TE speed and bodies.

Funches is faster and more athletic than Gardner, and both at this point probably have similar hands, but Funch has more experience running routes than Gardner does.
I believe Funchess will be a better pro reciever, but I like Gardner's work ethic and attitude way more, If he enters the right system, he could have a good NFL career as a redzone target.
December 10th, 2014 at 4:13 PM ^
I'm not sure Funchess is noticeably faster than Gardner.
According to Funchess' high school coach - Funchess was a "4.6-4.7 guy" in High School.
Devin Gardner ran a timed 4.55 in High School.
NFL Draft Scout predictions for the 40 -
Funchess - 4.63 (4.52 low, 4.74 high)
Gardner - 4.62 (4.52 low, 4.72 high)
December 10th, 2014 at 5:41 PM ^
I would take Gardner because of effort and attitude.

What, because it's not CC talk? This is a perfectly normal thread to have on a sports blog. Not that we've had many normal threads here lately...

It's silly because this isn't even for debate. Funcess is and will be the better receiver (so long as he tries and works, of course).

"(so long as he tries and works, of course)."
There is little question Funchess has more talent, but DG has more discipline and a better attitude, along with some talent.

a brussel sprout? All of the sudden, I realize you may be referring to the small, cabbage like vegetable known as the Brussels sprout. For all intensive purposes, its a mute point, I guess.

My mom would boil the shit out of them and they were nasty. But pan roasted with garlic olive oil and a spritz of lemon and they are very good.

Better chance of bulking up to be a DE than having any chance at RB.
Most likely: Smart guy that will do well in the world with his degree(s).
December 10th, 2014 at 2:29 PM ^
Funchess is probably a bit faster, and certainly a bigger target. I could see Gardner being a better route runner once he's healthy and has some practice with it, as he's definitely the more agile of the two. I'd have to say Funchess, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Gardner put together a career at WR if he chooses to pursue that.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:29 PM ^
Neither.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:30 PM ^
Based on how things have gone for us the last few years I would not be shocked if Gardner were a pro bowl QB in three years, and Funchess a pro bowl TE.
