Better Pro WR - Funchess or Gardner?

Submitted by Black Socks on

Let's hear your thoughts.  They both have the talent.

Probably Funchess. Has DG said whether or not he's going to enter the draft/continue to play football?

Wouldn't it kind of be a no brainer if you had the athletic talent? Seems like you would give it a shot so you don't have to look back and ask "what if" and earn a nice nest egg even if it is a year or two.

If he is smart with the money, he decides football is not for him at that level after two years and maybe he has $1-2 million and goes to work on his PHD or into Social Work where he will make $30,000 a year.

I understand your point. UofM has pretty consistenly had the highest rated School of Social Work according to US News. An MSW from the #1 school might get him double the $30K you mentioned. It's not great, but it's not peanuts, either. My Dad got his MSW from UofM and put three kids through UofM.

If he can get a look from an NFL team, he'd be better off financially going that route. I don't remember being that impressed by his skills as a WR, but if he focuses on that, perhaps he could latch on as a 3rd or 4th WR.

I wouldn't draft Funchess in the first round. Maybe not even in the second. I'd want to know what happened to him between the ND and Ohio State games first before making that pick.

That offense was a disaster so GMs may give him a break on that.  If he goes out there and has one of the top 40 times at the combine, he'll be a 1st round pick.  If he's too slow or doesn't work out at the combine at all, then he may fall anywhere between the 2nd and 4th rounds.

The state of Michigan was transporting prisoners to a courthouse 60 miles away for their motions to be heard. The state had to rent busses, pay drivers and security guards to make the trip. A social worker (I bet you can guess who) worked through the regulatory system and with the various unions to change the system such that the judge and a few court officials made the trip to the prison instead. The savings to the state was around $300K annually, but you go ahead and continue making ignorant statements about social workers.

I think both are a half-step slow to be classic NFL WR's, but DG has shown, time and again, that he is supremely motivated.  I think he would find a way to get open and find a way to catch the ball.  I don't know if we can say that about Funchess yet.  There is also the chance that the NFL has "adjusted" to Jimmy Graham and other WR's with TE speed and bodies.

Funches is faster and more athletic than Gardner, and both at this point probably have similar hands, but Funch has more experience running routes than Gardner does.

I believe Funchess will be a better pro reciever, but I like Gardner's work ethic and attitude way more, If he enters the right system, he could have a good NFL career as a redzone target.

I'm not sure Funchess is noticeably faster than Gardner.

According to Funchess' high school coach - Funchess was a "4.6-4.7 guy" in High School.

Devin Gardner ran a timed 4.55 in High School.

NFL Draft Scout predictions for the 40 -

Funchess - 4.63 (4.52 low, 4.74 high)

Gardner - 4.62 (4.52 low, 4.72 high)

I think Gardner's attitude and work ethic is why there is a debate here when linked with Funchess appearing to have mentally checked out on the season. To borrow from a speech Harbaugh gave to his players while at Stanford, making it to the League means you are taking a job from somebody else and #1 didn't show that desire enough this season.

Funchess is probably a bit faster, and certainly a bigger target. I could see Gardner being a better route runner once he's healthy and has some practice with it, as he's definitely the more agile of the two. I'd have to say Funchess, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Gardner put together a career at WR if he chooses to pursue that.
