Barkley Marathon

Don't know if there are any other folks out there following the ultramarathon scene, but seeing 3 runners finish Barkley this year was freaking incredible.  I spent the better part of three days following Keith on twitter pulling for as many people to finish as possible

Laz is going to make it brutal next year.

Ultra-marathoning?  Given the title, I thought that TNT was running a marathon of Charles Barkley clips culled from his finest performances.  I feel cheated and want my money back…

is this the one where you have to run 60 miles in 100 hours through woods, swamps, sewers, etc.? If so no one has even finished in 3 years. 3 finishing is incredible

I don't follow it but came across this study that suggests long endurance athletes are more susceptible to coronary atherosclerosis.

The suggestion that long-term endurance exercise may lead to a paradoxical increase in coronary atherosclerosis has been raised again by a new study.

In the Master@Heart study, lifelong endurance athletes had more coronary plaques, including more noncalcified plaques, than fit and healthy individuals with a similarly low cardiovascular risk profile.

The study was presented at the recent American College of Cardiology (ACC) Scientific Session/World Congress of Cardiology (WCC) 2023 on March 6.

It was also simultaneously published online in the European Heart Journal.

"We consistently see higher plaque burden in lifelong endurance athletes. This is regardless of the plaque type, whether it is calcified, mixed, noncalcified, in the proximal segment or causing more than 50% stenosis," concluded Ruben De Bosscher, MD, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, during his presentation.

The researchers suggest that all the information to date suggests there may be a "reverse J-shaped" dose-response relationship between exercise and coronary atherosclerosis.

The race is the Marquette 50 up in the UP in August.  I'm following Hal Higdons 50K ultra training plan which is a six month program of increasing miles week to week with no real speedwork.  I did this race before and the rock climbing and elevation gains killed me so I'm adding strength training to my plan this time.

i will say the toughest triathlon i ever did was in big bay.  the swim was in lake independence, no big deal on that, but the run and the bike were tough.  lots of gain/loss of elevation on barely discernable logging 'roads' which were frequently impassable even with a mountain bike.  lots of folks got lost, fortunately i wasn't among them.

I've read several studies before (I can't remember where, unfortunately) that low-intensity, steady-state exercise causes oxidative stress after ~1 hour.  The effects of long-term endurance training, paradoxically, makes it about as healthy to train for marathons as it does to eat McDonald's every day.

I went to high school with John Kelly.  Ran cross country/track with him.  He’s a good dude.  Wicked smart and a dogged personality….which you have to have to be a multi-time Barkley finisher.

have a long-time buddy who has been big into the true 'iron man' races (not the little ones that i do) and these wild endurance marathon races.  great guy and some of the stuff they do, for instance in team racing, where they kayak, climb, run, repel, you name it, is pretty wild.  huge hat tip for that type of dedication and endurance.

I tried to read the article but can't get past this first sentence.

The Barkley Marathons is like a bus: you wait six years for a finisher and then three come along at once.

I saw the documentary 4 years ago and its fascinating to say the least. I have a buddy who’s into ultramarathons and tried to convince him to do it and ill be his support team. He flat out refused.
