2024 DL Brandon Davis-Swain names M to top 5
West Bloomfield (MI) West Bloomfield defensive lineman Brandon Davis-Swain named Michigan to his top five, along with Auburn, Colorado, Purdue, and USC. He's a 4-star, the #19 defensive lineman, and #146 overall.
Davis-Swain was committed to Notre Dame at one point, but even though his former head coach Ron Bellamy is now at Michigan, I just get the feeling that this one is not going to go in Michigan's direction when all is said and done. I could be wrong, of course. I thought a lot of these West Bloomfield kids would be shoo-ins for Michigan, and while it's worked out in some cases (Amir Herring, for example), some other kids have either transferred (Cornell Wheeler) or committed elsewhere (Kari Jackson, Jamir Benjamin, etc.).
Thanks, Mags.
Reading some other articles it seemed like Michigan was higher on a few other guys. Also Purdue…then USC? Those are not the same.
Yeah, it does not seem to me that Michigan is extremely high on him, even though he's #146 overall. Spots are somewhat limited, and they're recruiting well.
I think I read somewhere that Michigan isn't really sold on him as an edge rusher, and when I've looked at the film compared to a Brian Robinson or Darrien Mayo, both of whom I think Michigan likes and are good spots for, the explosiveness and bend are noticeably different.
If Michigan were to take I think it would be more on the interior, but I'm not sure if his frame could carry another 50lbs as well as a Kris Jenkins or whether he would be willing to do that, unless Michigan inexplicably misses on their other edge targets.
seems like corey malone hatcher type recruitment - local kid with early offers fighting to hang on as peers develop past him
will be interesting how Michigan and other teams play this situation now. With NIL basically making scholarship limits somewhat a thing of the past do you take more guys than you would need in a position and see what pans out expecting who didn't pan out to portal out? Or does that strategy turn off recruits you may be higher on.
77 - you are right - Purdue is a much stronger defensive team than USC.
Or does Purdue just benefit by playing B1G West teams?
Top kid from Michigan and MSU does not make the top five?
Tuck coming?
Get the sense Michigan likes Brian Robinson over Davis-Swain for that position and will not be taking both. Especially since Robinson has gotten up to visit Michigan almost 10 times when BDS is right down the road.
I don't think Robinson and BDS would really be the same position.
I think it's more of if UM thinks BDS can become a Kris Jenkins type position and add size and if they want that position moving forward
I agree with this. Davis-Swain is more of an inside guy (Kris Jenkins), whereas I think Brian Robinson would be that stand-up DE type like Mike Morris or Aidan Hutchinson.
I'm thinking Colorado
Huge fan of Davis-Swain as a prospect and hope we can get him, but I too just have this feeling it's not gonna go our way. Have a feeling it's gonna be Colorado or Purdue.
grody colors ftw
without giving up too much info on how i know what i am about to say because i have no idea who reads this board...
in 2021 everyone at West Bloom and BDS's family all said that the plan was for him to be playing football at Michigan, and they were doing everything they could to make sure he was ready including tutors and such during the summer. this is why it was surprising that he committed to ND even though he was pretty much at every Michigan home game in 2021 and some in 2022...
Personally again knowing what i know he would be better suited to be at a school that has a coach that he knows that can help him with certain things on the learning/school side of things.
Unverified voracity
I like that Donovan Edwards just so happened to be visiting West Bloomfield, on Davis-Swain's birthday. They took a nice pic together celebrating his birthday.
What a weird mix of schools....
I'll defer to the Michigan staff to determine who they think they should pursue on the recruiting trail.
There's a lot to offering a player / prospect. One aspect is talent. Another is potential. A third would be attitude and commitment. And, IMO, the biggest one is - culture - would this prospect "fit" in the program.
I'm not implying that he would, or wouldn't, be a good addition to the program; however, there's a lot to it.
Wishing him - and the Maize & Blue - well.
You missed an important one - does the prospect fit the scheme that the program would like to run?
I think that is the key issue in the case - he is an Edge / DL tweener in Michigan's scheme.
It seems like he has visited a ton and when he decommited I assumed it was in favor of UM but now it feels like he wants UM more than UM wants him. Time will tell and good luck either way.
Colorado... I don't think Sanders is going to stay there very long, but he is making them relevant again.
If not Michigan, go to Colorado, young man. Boulder is fantastic and Coach Prime is good for college football. Adds flavor to the sport.
