WTKA Roundtable 9/22/2022: Meatballs and Matzah Balls Comment Count

Seth September 22nd, 2022 at 11:20 AM

Things discussed:

  • Bubbles: That’s how UConn is playing.
  • JJ is looking guys off to create his space, and seeing the game from an advanced perspective. Knows what he’s got out there and is playing greedy.
  • UConn was playing tough on the edges, Michigan beat it with Oluwatimi, with screens, and by adding tight ends to hid which side they’re running at.
  • OL issues? A few targeting things where it’s just one guy and fixable. Maybe a little worried about Trente Jones’s pass protection.
  • Defense: Waiting for a real opponent, but going to throw some weird looks at Tagovailoa. Really like Jenkins, seeing progression already from McGregor. Love that they have a dime again.
  • Break: Keshaun Harris!
  • Maryland? Got a good offense, returning everyone including some injured WRs who’ve been rusty so far. Defense is BAD. Due respect to SMU but their ILBs are not playable. Rakim Jarrett is the best WR they’ll see before Ohio State.
  • MSU in trouble? They’re too good at getting more than they deserve. Secondary needed speed, got a guy named Speed.
  • Run through the Big Ten. Minnesota? They’ve got an offensive identity (they MANBALL with everybody’s Chuck Filiagas) and a defense—do you need any more to win the Big Ten West? Wisconsin doesn’t have the OL of Wisconsins of old. Penn State? Auburn is terrible but PSU is a Top-20 team.

Way too early to be writing off Michigan State. You just know that they're going to pull out some incredibly wacky things in the Michigan game. Jacob Slade and Jayden Reed, who both missed the Washington game, will likely be back. Slade in particular changes the dynamic up front, especially for Michigan's interior line which has been somewhat inconsistent to this point. A lot is going to change for both teams between now and then.

UM already threw for 400 yards as a worse passing offense on them last year. You can't 100% write them off because potential wackiness in a rivalry game but it would really take a poor UM offensive gameplan that doesn't attack their secondary well enough for the game to be close enough to make wackiness matter. MSU's pass defense is also not going to magically get better, they are trotting the same guys who sucked in pass coverage last year and the only addition was a transfer who sucked at Georgia and got benched there. Quite frankly the only thing liable to change is UM's pass offense will continue to get better by the MSU game as JJ gets more games under his belt.

I think the key is actually simply attacking the weakness of MSUs defense vs. simply deciding that manball has to be used to prove that manball can be used.  Michigan needs to continues taking what the defense is offering, in this case, using the passing game to open up the running game.

I think that there is an opportunity to open it up early and force MSU into a game they dont want to play and that should hopefully keep it non-competitive.  However, it is MSU and strange shit simply seems to happen and you cannot discount that it is their Superbowl, NC game and conference title game all wrapped into one every year.  Being prepared and showing up is key on that one.

Did anyone else get a random ad over the content? It occurred at about the 14 minute and 39 minute mark of the Podcast (I don't know about the Youtube).
