Michigan announced this morning that John Beilein agreed to a rollover contract extension that will keep him with the program through at least 2022-23. From the official press release:

University of Michigan Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel announced Wednesday (July 18) that he and the David and Meredith Kaplan Men's Basketball Head Coach John Beilein have reached an agreement for a contract extension through the 2022-23 season.

Additionally, the newly inked five-year rollover deal automatically extends one additional year and repeats each year until either Beilein, or U-M, has given proper notice that the renewal will not be exercised by mid-April.

"I am thrilled to ensure John's leadership of our basketball program today and into the future," Manuel said. "I am very pleased with our shared dialog throughout the process, and I am extremely happy that one of the game's great coaches is representing the University of Michigan."

"I am grateful for the opportunity the University of Michigan has given to me over the past 11 years," said Beilein. "Kathleen and I love Ann Arbor, our University, our fans and the state of Michigan. We will continue to work very hard in the future to have our basketball team reflect the greatness of this University. I thank Mark Schlissel and Warde Manuel for their faith and commitment to our coaching staff and basketball program. The future of men's basketball is bright and I am excited to be a part of it."

Financial terms were not released; it's a safe bet Beilein got a nice pay raise and assurance the salary pool for his assistants gets a similar bump.

Analysis: This is very good news!

[Izzo walks into recruit's room]

"Belein will get you paid, but it’ll be later.  (I believe there’s a “daft” that they do.  I get a lotta guys in it, so some people call me Daft for short.  Which I am not.  Anyways.)  We’ll pay you right now, and we’ll pay for your family’s dinner.  You might have to pay it back later, but hey. . . $140 now, or $1 point 4 [quietly] million [back to loud] in the draft later?  Look. . . I don’t pay too much attention to numbers – heck, we don’t even require it anymore – but I know that 14 is a lot more than 1 point 4.

And he's had a lot of kids drafted lately, but they come in with ranking a lot higher than ours.  100+ ratings!  And it still takes him 3 years to get Stauskas drafted.  Bring me a weird guy with one tenth of that ranking (top 32), and I'll get him drafted in 4 years.  Wouldn't you rather spend MORE time in college?

And they also fire people who enable!  I don't do numbers so good, but here in EL winning > ethics!

Yes! Beilein rules! Glad he got that extension. He sure does deserve it, as does Yaklich and the assistants. I'm looking forward to February and March when they really turn it on in the Annual Beilein Surge.

This is a little ridiculous though (emphasis mine).

I mean, I guess I should be grateful that there are people out there who put up serious money for stuff like this but I think its weird.

Although to be technical, they aren't naming people after the rich people--they're naming positions after the rich people.

I find it annoying in the press releases, but if it allows our alumni to legally aim more of the money cannon towards our school then, it's a small price to pay.

True.  I've always been impressed by the high rollers who occasionally donate as "Anonymous."

I don't think I'd have that level of humility.  If I somehow won the Powerball or Mega Millions, I'd definitely give a lot to charity & to institutions that I want to see flourish.  But I'd definitely be one of the money cannon jerks who'd want my family name to be prominently displayed.  Partly for my own ego, but largely to help open doors for my (now 3 year old) kid and other relatives who theoretically get a halo effect.

I know this naming thing is stupid, but I have personally met Mr. Donald R. Shepherd and he is an awesome person.  He has given a TON of money to the Marching Band over the years and spend a lot of personal time interacting with band members.   As "rich dudes with stuff named after them" go, he's at the top of the list.
