John Beilein Signs Contract Extension

Michigan announced this morning that John Beilein agreed to a rollover contract extension that will keep him with the program through at least 2022-23. From the official press release:
University of Michigan Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel announced Wednesday (July 18) that he and the David and Meredith Kaplan Men's Basketball Head Coach John Beilein have reached an agreement for a contract extension through the 2022-23 season.
Additionally, the newly inked five-year rollover deal automatically extends one additional year and repeats each year until either Beilein, or U-M, has given proper notice that the renewal will not be exercised by mid-April.
"I am thrilled to ensure John's leadership of our basketball program today and into the future," Manuel said. "I am very pleased with our shared dialog throughout the process, and I am extremely happy that one of the game's great coaches is representing the University of Michigan."
"I am grateful for the opportunity the University of Michigan has given to me over the past 11 years," said Beilein. "Kathleen and I love Ann Arbor, our University, our fans and the state of Michigan. We will continue to work very hard in the future to have our basketball team reflect the greatness of this University. I thank Mark Schlissel and Warde Manuel for their faith and commitment to our coaching staff and basketball program. The future of men's basketball is bright and I am excited to be a part of it."
Financial terms were not released; it's a safe bet Beilein got a nice pay raise and assurance the salary pool for his assistants gets a similar bump.
Analysis: This is very good news!
This is good news? This seems like good news. Okay, this is very good news.
And it's not fake news. Right?
This calls for a celebration!
Let's not get too crazy now...

Great news indeed! Hopefully, this will also shut off any negative recruiting from our rivals about how long Beilein will be around.
I always assumed that recruiting against Beilein went like this: "We will give you money, he will not".
[Izzo walks into recruit's room]
"Belein will get you paid, but it’ll be later. (I believe there’s a “daft” that they do. I get a lotta guys in it, so some people call me Daft for short. Which I am not. Anyways.) We’ll pay you right now, and we’ll pay for your family’s dinner. You might have to pay it back later, but hey. . . $140 now, or $1 point 4 [quietly] million [back to loud] in the draft later? Look. . . I don’t pay too much attention to numbers – heck, we don’t even require it anymore – but I know that 14 is a lot more than 1 point 4.
And he's had a lot of kids drafted lately, but they come in with ranking a lot higher than ours. 100+ ratings! And it still takes him 3 years to get Stauskas drafted. Bring me a weird guy with one tenth of that ranking (top 32), and I'll get him drafted in 4 years. Wouldn't you rather spend MORE time in college?
And they also fire people who enable! I don't do numbers so good, but here in EL winning > ethics!
Yes! Beilein rules! Glad he got that extension. He sure does deserve it, as does Yaklich and the assistants. I'm looking forward to February and March when they really turn it on in the Annual Beilein Surge.
This is a little ridiculous though (emphasis mine).

I mean, I guess I should be grateful that there are people out there who put up serious money for stuff like this but I think its weird.
Rich people want to give money to the University. The University wants this money. The rich people giving the money want to make sure that other people know they have the money. There are only so many buildings worth naming after someone.
Solution! Let’s name people after the rich people!
Although to be technical, they aren't naming people after the rich people--they're naming positions after the rich people.
I find it annoying in the press releases, but if it allows our alumni to legally aim more of the money cannon towards our school then, it's a small price to pay.
Yeah, except these people can just - you know - give money. The egos that exist in this world are astounding.
I wonder how much it would take for the U to rename the small rooftop on West Quad where I used to smoke weed with my buddies the "The University of Michigan L'Carpetron Dookmarriot Pot Porch".
There's a stairway window there, about three stories up in Rumsey House, that I will donate $100 for if they rename it the Yossarians Tree Bucket o' Water Drop Window. Every time I came back to my dorm room I had to scope that window out.
We are talking about extraordinary amounts of money though. I think the coaching position name is BS and I wouldn't do that, but if I'm giving you 10 milly I want *something* out of it if for sure.
True. I've always been impressed by the high rollers who occasionally donate as "Anonymous."
I don't think I'd have that level of humility. If I somehow won the Powerball or Mega Millions, I'd definitely give a lot to charity & to institutions that I want to see flourish. But I'd definitely be one of the money cannon jerks who'd want my family name to be prominently displayed. Partly for my own ego, but largely to help open doors for my (now 3 year old) kid and other relatives who theoretically get a halo effect.
Give: 5 seconds of reading time.
Receive: millions to favorite school.
Reaction: complain that gift is not good enough (for him). States other people have giant egos.
. . .
Verdict: sounds legit.
I wonder what it cost for Ace to get four playing cards named after him.
I know this naming thing is stupid, but I have personally met Mr. Donald R. Shepherd and he is an awesome person. He has given a TON of money to the Marching Band over the years and spend a lot of personal time interacting with band members. As "rich dudes with stuff named after them" go, he's at the top of the list.
Great pub for Shepherd and Kaplans!

Someday, I want to be rich enough to endow the MSU head coaching position so that he has to be introduced as such:
"The Intolerable Ass of a Head Coach Mark Dantonio..."
Good. I really hope they add a healthy chunk to the assistant salary pool.
Actor portrayal of rumored John Bielein & Luke Yaklich meeting slated for later today......
Some good news! I like good news! Good news is.. Well, good.
Isn't Michigan jumping the gun? He missed on Carton and all that is left is Top 50 to Top 100 guys.
Love. This. Coach.
No one deserves this more.
Would post the super soaker gif but can't due to this new and improved site.
