Today was a good day.

can we get a youtube Ice Cube version of that? I don't know how to embed on here.

Today was a luke warm day.

Today feels better than yesterday
(with the exception of two seconds yesterday when my wiferemoved her foot from my rear end once I finally got off the laptop)
(The F5 button is happier too)

Literally and figuatively. For all the "Get back to MICHIGAN defense" BS that's out there, Mike will be a huge help on the defensive side of the ball. In our only 2 top-10 defenses of the past 15 years (1997, 2006) we've been absolutely stocked with NFL talent. Right now Mike is our only sure-fire NFLer on that side of the ball. He's a great keep and talent

the only way this defense makes the jump we're hoping for is with a raging beast mode Mike Martin in the middle
January 12th, 2011 at 3:56 PM ^
He will certainly help his draft stock by staying another year as well.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
That and the fact there likely won't be an NFL for part or all of next year probably makes the decision easier.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:56 PM ^
Those who stay will be champions!!!

"Those who are champions, will stay."

I was being naive, but I was never too concerned about Martin leaving for the NFL. He isn't projected to go in the top three rounds - and if Donovan Warren proved anything, it's that leaving early can be detremental to one's career. It would have been a mistake for Martin to leave no matter who the coach was going to be. Obviously it's GREAT that we have him - but I'm more concerned about Denard, and not just whether he'll stay with us - but how will we use him. This OC really scares me.

It sounds like all of the people who weren't encouraging kids to stay under RR are back to encouraging them to stay under Hoke. It sucked for RR, but it definitely helps now.
And right now, this program needs all of the help and good news it can get.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:00 PM ^
RR never got a modicum of support from the network that is most important to succeeding at Michigan: former coaches and players. I think some saw RR's hiring as a repudiation of the Carr Era. Even assuming that's true, that was not on RR.

Nobody disrupts the middle of the OL like MM so it definitely helps out our defense next year for sure.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:03 PM ^
This is uncannily accurate. Almost freaks me out.

I cringed when I saw a week ago that he was looking into his draft status. I am so glad he is coming back... .this is a huge deal.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:02 PM ^
How about MM at DT with Q. Washington (assuming we go back to a 4 man line)...nice big duo to clog the middle...
Maybe even move BWC back to DT, with Hoke as the perfect motivator for him.

I like this setup. Depth is certainly a concern. Van Bergen can sub some at DT and Black can play a good deal at end to keep Van Bergen fresh.

Hoke's presser did not reassure me at all on that count. He talked about molding Denard to fit the system, rather than changing his system to fit Denard.
That sounded to me like either Denard learns to be a 5-step drop pocket passer or he sits behind Devin, or he plays some other position. That's not what Denard has any interest in doing, unfortunately. He may be around through Spring practice, see the writing on the wall, then bolt next Summer.
Hope I'm wrong, but I think we're done with running quarterbacks for a while.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
That was not how I heard it at all. Plus DB made it clear that a smart coach adapts his system to his players. So I think you have this wrong (thankfully).
January 12th, 2011 at 4:07 PM ^
Can Donovan Warren come back too? He still has 1 more year of eligibility!!
January 12th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
It's a good sign Denard got a call-out at the presser. Some of the remarks were ambiguous (by "mold," did he mean "coach him up," or "manufacture pro-style dilithium"), but the tenor was positive in recognizing Denard's talents and accomplishments.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
I think he meant "raise him up"
January 12th, 2011 at 5:09 PM ^
too soon man...too soon.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
Does that mean McCoy will be moved from Chief Medical Officer to guard and Spock will now be at center?

I mean Denard has an arm and hes about the same height as Drew Breese. Someone just needs to teach him to RUN when there is no one open and I have no problem with him being our drop back passer.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
We will see a lot less attrition this time around (hopefully including Denard) simply due to the fact that our roster is stacked for the next couple years--espectially on offense. Sure people left when RR took over because of the new system, but also because we were going to suck that year no matter what (granted, Mallet would have helped). But, the vibe with this team seems very positive, and I think they genuinely enjoy playing (and winning) together.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
but in reality he had nowhere to go. He is very undersized for the NFL and will be a 4th round pick as it stands now.
I am not the least bit sold on the new coach. Very iffy track record....could be in over his head at a program of this magnitude. Very big difference from when he coached here before....he is in charge of it all now and that can be overwhelming to say the least. He is way far behind in recruiting (thanks Dave!).....and the talent level is still the same, which is to say not what we have been used to in years past.
We tossed out a very fine and proven coach before he even got to coach his own recruits as juniors. I was not a fan of RR when he was hired.....but i did learn to really like his style and his offense. He was and still is a classy man who deserved so much better than what he got here. The way he was treated here was almost criminal and made me sad to say the least. Wherever he lands i will be a fan...
As for my Wolverines.....i see some lean years ahead again. A whole new system....a seriously depleted recruiting class this season....a very good back up QB already gone...and yes....there will almost certainly be some transfers and dropouts from the roster as it is now. Hoke may be a fine coach....we will see soon enough. But in my mind....47-50 is about as mediocre as it gets and if anyone thinks coming here and facing what he will at this school will somehow make him a .750 winner.....well......think again.
Mediocrity breeds same. That is my fear with such an un-proven entity.
There is very little reason to be optimistic at this point.

Certainly happy for Mike and support all the young men and women who particpate in Michigan athletics. Program is at a tipping point and I hope all the Carr cronies are happy with a hard working, nice guy with average to below coaching results.
Sickening!
