To Whom it May Concern:
I find these "little brother" references insulting and request they stop immediately.
Sincerely,
Canada

I think it's one thing if a player says something like this, but quite another if the University is spreading these types of messages. Sure, maybe it was just a rogue arena worker, but I'd have to imagine this isn't the type of image that the higher-ups at BYU would like to be projecting. Or maybe it is, who knows with those crazy Mormons.

I thought politics and religion were not allowed here.
November 19th, 2010 at 1:21 PM ^
It was only politics, but I think that insulting a group of people like that is likely to offend someone on the board.
November 19th, 2010 at 1:35 PM ^
Do Mormons use the internet?
November 19th, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^
I'm Mormon. Jokes like that don't really offend us, since we get them a lot. But it is nice to have someone point that out that it's a little bit much to make sweeping statements like that. We're all die-hard Michigan fans so we shouldn't worry about anything more than that.

There are Mormons in D.C.?!?!
EDIT: Never mind, I just realilzed "D.C. Wolverine" must stand for "(Latter) Day (Saints) Church Wolverine."
I got a little nervous there for a minute...
November 19th, 2010 at 2:16 PM ^
Nope. It means DC as in Washington DC. I grew up in DC and my family still lives in the area.

It seems hard for me to imagine that political jokes would somehow be deemed more offensive than religious jokes. If the "rule" only applied to the former, it's probably because it should be patently obvious that insulting people's religious faith is out of bounds.
November 19th, 2010 at 1:23 PM ^
I thought the rule was only politics, but I'm sure religion is also somewhat discouraged. However, I don't think this tiny mention warrants any action.
EDIT: It was a joke.
November 19th, 2010 at 1:27 PM ^
That is two that say only politics so I must have been mistaken.
Also, as to the edit.....I know lots of jokes about various religions, all of which people who actually practice those religions find very offensive.

I'll leave the Mormon jokes to South Park.

I guess it depends on "the situation"

Did you catch the Wizard of Oz 1/2 time show a few weeks back against Illinois? I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure MSC or DB made reference to the little brother theme across the Big Screen. Granted the 1/2 time show was very entertaining for once and the references were out of fun, but if UM would have been the butt of some of the jokes @ another stadium we'd be up in arms. All in all we're no different in our actions than BYU even though we like to hold ourselves to higher standards.

I think there's a pretty significant difference between poking fun at conference rivals when they aren't playing you and doing so when they are, with their fans in attendance.
November 19th, 2010 at 3:17 PM ^
I think that's a pretty fuzzy line to draw. It's either alright for a school to officially poke fun at another school or it isn't. It's kind of like, "If you wouldn't say it to their face, then don't say it at all."
November 19th, 2010 at 3:34 PM ^
Yes, I was at the Illinois game and watched the halftime show. That is a good point. I guess my comment was more directed at the actual message itself, and not the "Big Brother" part.
"Dear Utah St. fans, enjoy the loss" just comes off as really dickish and bush league. To me, the halftime show was more "in good fun" rather than this, which just seems plain mean-spirited. But, I do see your point, and I'd certainly be embarrassed if Michigan did something similar.

That game was awesome. Utah State is our biggest rival in basketball so beating them is always good. The administration is definitely not happy about that though. They make a big deal about having good sportsmanship here.

UT does the same thing with TA&M.

"Little Brother" needs to stop. It keeps haunting us and last I knew they own us since Hart said it.
Hart needs to man up and retract it.
November 19th, 2010 at 2:38 PM ^
Or, more likely, that statement has nothing to do with anything that's gone on since, and the losing streak is a coincidence.
November 19th, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
ding ding. Its not like we've been some dominant team that is "only" losing a cursed game to state. We have a bad team the past few years, so of course we're going to probably lose to better teams. Hopefully that all changes this next year and beyond!
November 20th, 2010 at 12:59 AM ^
Right...? I'm not sure why this is directed at me. I'm just saying it's not the first time another school has referred to another as little brother, and won't be the last either.
November 19th, 2010 at 4:57 PM ^
Mike Hart made that statement. Who unless I am mistaken he owned moooo u over his career. So unless he has some how been stopped by moo u in the last 3 years he has nothing to retract.
November 19th, 2010 at 4:20 PM ^
He said it and I hope he continues to stand behind it. No retractions
