I'm sure if it's good news for UofM, Valenti will still find a way slam Michigan.  They will spend 2+ hours breaking it all down.  Anything to avoid talking about how his Spartans forgot there was a game in Iowa last Saturday.

If Michigan gets the self-imposed slap on the wrist it almost deserves, it may quiet some of the anti-RR sentiment among the "fans" and MSM.  Self-imposed penalties, followed by wins against Illinois and Purdue, would go a long way toward restoring maturity and sanity to many among the fanbase.

And it would make a couple of "writers" at the Freep instantly go from midnight to six.

Nice to see David Brandon developing a relationship with Larry Lage; who will help us navigate the SE Michigan press, which have become Dantonio's personal assistants.

Illinois and Purdue are Must Win Games! Illinois at Home and a crappy Purdue team on the road.  7-5 is a good season with the shit that we have been dealt on the defense. Youth will only develop and get better and playing time will definetly force some kids to grow up.

This really is not a big deal.  We were only appealing one of the five violations, and even if the appeal is rejected, we're not looking at much in the way of sanctions.  People have been getting too worked up about this.

Section 1

November 3rd, 2010 at 7:30 PM ^

People have gotten worked up about this because they thought that the charges themselves were serious, that RR might be some sort of wild outlaw, and because they thought that Michigan could be getting into some monstrous sanctions.

That's all incorrect; clearly, you know better, and you're right of course.  People who thought those things were getting "too worked up."

The basic allegations, while "Major" in NCAA-speak, were some minor crap.  And, importantly, NOTHING like what the Freep alleged.

Still, for some mostly-illegitimate reasons, people were getting worked up.

This will be a very, very big deal tomorrow for these (expected) reasons:

  • It ends this story;
  • It will likely confirm something about the University's formal response language that stated that the initial media [Free Press] reports were "wildly exaggerated if not flatly incorrect."
  • It might just declare Rich Rod INNOCENT of the Fifth Allegation; that he had failed to encourage an atmospehere of complaince.  That is HUGE huge.

Because remember -- the idea behind the Rosenberg/Snyder story of August 2009 wasn't to get after the Athletic Department's faceless functionaries about their overdue paperwork.  It was intended to attack the character of Rich Rodriguez and, don't forget, the character of Mike Barwis.  Complete with scowling photo of Barwis and much mention of his name and his personal style.  Nevermind that Barwis was virtually a non-entity in any violations by the time the NCAA completed its investigation.  Rosenberg specifically wanted to imply that Rodriguez and Barwis were a couple of merciless hillbilly mafia hardasses who were playing fast and loose with Michigan's great tradition as a clean program.  We now know that was a lie.

So yeah, for all those reasons, the final report is huge.

Fuck you, Rosenberg.  Fuck you, Snyder.  And fuck the Free Press.

NCAA ruling AND two UFRs tomorrow probably means I should get off the Mgoboard now and do some work because just about nothing's getting done tomorrow.

I am just waiting for the first mgoboard post about opinions on whether the NCAA rulings will help determine the fate of RR when everything that can be said at this point can clearly be commented in this thread.

Then I am imagining Geaux_Blue writing the first comment

Sad.  Sure I am glad we aren't going to get whacked USC-style, but c'mon.  I don't think I can consider it a good day for Michigan when we are found guilty of NCAA infractions.  I can't see myself wandering around bragging to my friends from other schools tomorrow.

We have been found guilty for some time now, hence the self-imposed sanctions.

I think any news along the lines of the NCAA accepting/reducing the self-imposed sanctions and/or convinced that RR did actually promote an atmoshpere of compliance, can be considered good news, but no it is certainly nothing to write home about.

The firm, steady (and some have said pimp) hand of David Brandon getting us across the river safe and dry.   Absolutely Rich Rodriguez can win big with a guy like that on his side.  They'll get it right. Maybe we'll get to see that synergy in action long-term.  The opportunity is there starting Saturday.

Illinois is nut cuttin' time.  Fired up.

that guy makes chicken soup out of chicken shit better than anyone I've ever seen.  Our secondary would put all of his skills to the greatest test.

If he turned our D around, he could retire as there would be no greater challenge he could accomplish.

Agreed.  What the freep says now is irrelevant.  They are about to lose whatever shred of credibility they had remaining.  They were the sole source of this story and I'm sure that will be pointed out in the next few days.  Let the shame and embarrassment commence.  The NCAA has spoken.

Rosenberg and Snyder know that they have been outplayed by Brandon, as they wrote in this article.

"The Free Press was unable to obtain the NCAA’s conclusions.

The Associated Press also reported that the report would be released Thursday."

Unlike Lage, who got an exclusive and verified it, the Freep learned about this information by reading the AP.

In addition, while the AP focused its article on Michigan's reaction, the Freep added this drivel to the article.

"According to the terms of Rodriguez’s contract, Michigan has the option to fire him “for cause” if “Rodriguez is determined by the NCAA, the Big Ten Conference, or the university to have committed a major violation of the NCAA rules, or to have intentionally committed any other type of violation of the NCAA Rules.”

"To date, university officials have indicated that they do not believe these violations rise to the level of a fireable offense."

Continuously beating a dead horse is a clear indication that the Freep has no independent information on this story, but is refusing to walk away from some pre-conceived conclusions based on outdated information.

Instead of investing their limited resources in Michigan and end up copying and pasting stories from AP, Rosenberg and Snyder should hit up Dantonio and figure out where the real stories are.  Some injured hockey player up at East Lansing would love to collaborate.

The timing of this will be excellent - offsetting the negative vibe off the PSU debacle - especially in the eyes of recruits.  Beat Illinois and this roller coaster is heading back up fast.

Gotta give mad props to everyone in the AD that obviously did a thorough job at getting the facts and presenting them so any potential damage to the school would be minimized. You know that everyone has learned from this and that it won't be repeated.

The total focus can now return to the field and figuring out ways to beat Illinois, Purdue, Wisconsin, and most importantly Ohio State.

This news feels like it does on a cold, cloudy day at Michigan Stadium when the sun suddenly pops out and warms us all up 20 degerees!

Time to look forward - all the negatives about this story need to be buried at 615 West Lafayette Blvd and left there. Acknowledge that it happened, admit it wasn't a proud moment, and move on.

Most of us were pretty sure this would happen but to have it actually happen is a huge sigh of relief. One thing that we as a fanbase and Michigan football doesnt have to worry about anymore. I like to think the team plays pretty loose now and sees if they can save coaches job starting Saturday.

According to AP -- as you probably expected -- the "happy" part means that the NCAA has dropped the alleged violation against Rodriguez:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The NCAA has dropped a charge directed at Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez, a person with knowledge of the ruling has told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one is permitted to comment on the case until the sports governing body announces its decision on Thursday.

Bing-fucking-O.

This is it.  The final slapdown to the Free Press.

For anybody who hasn't done so, (ick -- this would require clicking on a Freep.com link) it is really worth going back to read the original story.  The passage of time, and the facts of the real investigation that the NCAA and Michigan did together, as opposed to the bullshit conducted by Rosenberg, makes it easy to forget that the original story was a real, personalized hit-piece on Rodriguez and Barwis. Re-reading it is astonishing.

Edit. -- Add this; remember now all of the baloney associated with fears that the NCAA's West Virgina investigation somehow meant that Rodriguez was going to be found to be some sort of unprecedented multi-insititution renegade.  That both Michigan and WVU would somehow be pulled into the void, all because of Rich Rod.

Fucking-a.

Garbage.  Done.  Finito.

Would it be "bing-fucking-o?" To me, having the letter g before the hyphen screws up the pronunciation. I think "bin-fucking-go" works better.

Man, I've already taken this too far.
