Lloyd Carr Talks!
Anything juicy about RR and how much LLoyd hates his guts? /s
But seriously, is there anything juicy? I'm too lazy to listen to the whole thing, and I have a calc IV exam to study for.
Was not mentioned a single time. He talked about Bo, Mo, Bennie Oosterbaan, etc. Not a word about the current coaching staff or teams.
...speaks volumes. Either he just is playing coy, or he knows something about the length of RR's tenure that would make supportive comments "uncomfortable."
Of course, he could simply detest RR as well, but I would think he would rise above that and at least provide some verbal support to help stabilize the program.
Hmmm...
Lloyd Carr is retiring well before RRs fate will be revealed. Carr has stated many times over that he wants to stay out of RRs way, because it is his program. He said that he will assist RR whenever he asks for it. I think its best that Lloyd gets to talk about all the wonderful years he spent at UM and not have to speak about RR.
Maybe this interview was more of a recap/retrospective on Carr's career and therefore not really the venue, but I'm surprised he hasn't taken on more of a cheerleader/promoter/ambassador role for the program at any point since his retirement (especially considering he has still been getting paid by the Michigan AD). You would think some mention of the current team would have to come out at some point, even if it just revolved around seeing guys he had recruited/coached finish out their careers. Maybe those who followed more closely than I did after Bo retired know better, but I would imagine this sort of interview happening with him prompting some discussion filled with platitudes about how the team needs to work hard and stay focused, but that things are looking good for next season and he likes player x, y, or z. That or some joke about how it is easier/harder to watch as a fan. Am I crazy on this one? We really haven't seen any of that and it really has nothing to do with Rodriguez or Carr's relationship with him (meaning he could easily talk about the team without really getting into anything about Rodriguez or his situation).
Am I crazy on this one?
I really don't think so.
Carr has stated many times over that he wants to stay out of RRs way, because it is his program. He said that he will assist RR whenever he asks for it.
Many times? Can you elaborate? I remember Carr saying this once. And then never speaking RR's name again. I would be interested in learning of these 'times.' They would go a long way toward changing perceptions.
has brushed off questions about RR since he took the job. I can not point out specific articles because I do not remember which they are. I just remember reading that Carr had offered to assist RR when he needed it, but otherwise he was trying to step back and let RR put his mark on the program and it wasn't LCs place to speak about RR.
Sorry I can't peg specific articles.
maybe lloyd should have read Bo's books.
on me recalling him saying this multiple times or BS on LC for his stance on how he should handle his job?
"new stadium is going to be a tremendous advantage"
NEED MORE TREMENDOUS
From the still at work club: "Summary Please?"
Lloyd is allergic to the words "Rich" and "Rodriguez."
At any point did Lloyd respond...
"Why would you ask a dumb question like that?"
In the 20+ minutes, not once was the name Rodriguez mentioned.
It is as if he thinks the program ended when he stopped coaching.
It's just been taking a nap...of which we woke up from last Spring. Wisconsin 08 and ND 09 were abrupt snores.
No way - Carr loves the program and continues to do a lot for it. A better way to put it is that it's as if the head coach position disappeared when he stopped coaching. It's as if he is in a vacuum. How can one talk about something that no longer exists?
Interesting perhaps...hardly conclusive.
I chose the word "interesting".
After all, it's Jeter who has the Michigan connection.
...about LC and his time at Michigan. I have a hard time understanding why LC is required to talk about his successor in this venue, especially when the interviewer never went there.
No one said he was 'required' to, but it is interesting nonetheless that he never talks about the current coach (that I am aware of). I know that I have seen many interviews in which past coaches give their opinions about their successors or at least their successor's teams. That Carr is never asked about nor ever volunteers any reference to RR or the current team, is, at the very least, curious.
Am I the only one who really doesn't like Jeff DeFran? He was fine during this interview, but I'm generally not a fan, although I've only listened to him a few times. Any fans/haters of DeFran out there?
A relic who lives in the past if ever there was one...bitter and angry at being left behind in the media and it shows...pathetic
I can't stand that lumpy sack of shit. He's thrown out some nasty unsubstantiated rumors about the coaching staff, claiming he heard them from his "inside source"....Even after Bruce Madej called him ON AIR to tell him he's way off base, Defran kept on ranting about how RR was getting canned. It was great hearing him get embarrassed on air by Sam Webb, Ira, and DOTMAN. I really wish he and his crusty old cronies "the beatniks" would just go away.
Sometimes inside info is that which you pull out your ass.
...thread who finds it "interesting...that he never talks about the current coach" is essentially "requiring" him to do so. Otherwise, that fact would be entirely unremarkable. He's retiring and therefore he's looking back. The interview was rightly a venue for him to talk about HIS tenure because HE is the one who is retiring.
LC's support or non-support for RichRod is entirely irrelevant as regards RichRod's tenure. The only things that are relevant in that regard are the results of the 2010 football season.
LC's support or non-support for RichRod is entirely irrelevant as regards RichRod's tenure.
I agree with all that you said, but the statement I quoted assumes that I think there is some relationship between RR's tenure and LC's support of him. I do not believe this. I do not believe there is some vast, or even tiny, conspiracy against RR. I am just interested in what LC thinks of RR, their relationship, and why LC hasn't spoken favorably of RR or, at the very least, the current team or the upcoming season. That is undeniably something that raises eyebrows, as is seen in this thread.
...I'm not looking for an e-fight here. I understand why folks' eyebrows are raised by his silence on RichRod. I for one did notice the lack of discussion about RichRod, but that didn't raise my eyebrows. For me, the eyebrow raising thing would be if he had discussed RichRod.
It's pretty clear to me that LC doesn't think much of RichRod. Since that's the case, it's certainly better that he remain silent about it.
My point is that for now, it should be ok that the interviews he does be about looking back to his tenure as head coach.
Was kind of my point. Not that Lloyd didn't bring it up, rather that in a long interview with the former coach of the Michigan Football team it wasn't mentioned at all.
I think it's odd that people think Lloyd Carr has to speak in some form about the new staff. As if he hasn't done enough for the University and the Athletic Program. The current staff doesn't need anybody to speak on their behalf. They need to do their job (and I believe they will given time) and develop the kids they have in the program, and hopefully win games.
RR was on Sam's show earlier in the day, and did not mention LC once. Didn't offer any platitudes, any wishes of good will. So, should his lack of comment be called into question? Of course not. The interviewer never asked, never gave him a reason to say anything.
Actually, for the conspiracy theorists, maybe RR has made it clear that questions about LC are off limits (after all, he hasn't said anything about LC since his first week, other than alluding to the lack of talent, and his need to build a program), and LC has made it clear that questions about RR are off limts. (For the record, I am not saying that I believe that to be the case.)
Actually, LC had plenty of good things to say about the direction of the program, although it had more to do with Brandon's influence. And RR was positive about the program, and made it clear that it was his job to win games to reward the fans.
I don't think things are all that bad.
How could he do an interview after Lloyd's retirement and say glowing things about his predecessor? It must mean Rich has it out for Lloyd...arrrrggggghhhhh!!!
I mean, silly right? But just as silly as the converse, which comes up all the time. When has Rich really said anything all that nice about Lloyd?
The point is, neither one has to. It has nothing to do with the program winning or not. It's just a salve for people insecure about the program fears.
In the interview he talks about an NFL team contacted him after the '97 season to see if he'd be interested. He slept on it and declined the next day. Very surprising that, one, he was contacted, and two that he had to sleep on it.
Oh, and he declines to name that franchise.
Why would it be surprising that he was contacted by the NFL? He ran a pro-style offense that produced many NFL players, and he had a lights-out defense.
Oh, and he declines to name that franchise.
Are you saying that he's lying about it?
No, I'm not saying he's lying about it. Why would you assume I meant it that way? Just stating that he didn't want to say it on air. I didn't want to be a tease and wanted full clarification for all.
I was surprised because I'd never heard a word about any NFL team ever coming after Lloyd.
Considering the radio host, that's a good thing.
Pretty clear Defran wasn't ever going to ask Carr about the current M team.
I think Lloyd would love to publicly speak positive about the current team, but feels he can't. Hell Lloyd recruited many of these kids, and of course, still feels a great attachment to many of them.
RR made some mistakes in the media in reference to Carr and some of the players on the team, but time and winning will probably heal these issues. Let's hope so, it is awkward to hear Lloyd talk about David Brandon, Mary Sue Coleman and his former teams, but have nary a word to say about the current team.
Yes.
What could possibly be preventing Carr from speaking positively about the current team if he wants to do so?
...maybe the fact that Rodriguez has repeatedly thrown Carr under the bus for the talent and conditioning of the team when he got there?
To me that would be a reason why he didn't want to speak positively about the current team or the current coach (and not a bad reason at that). If he had the desire to praise the current team/coach, I just don't see anything stopping him from doing so (Coach Carr doesn't seem like the type to let other people or external circumstances control what he can/can't say).
But come on people...stop acting like what Magnus said isn't the case. Even Brian gets a little uncomfortable with Rich's tendency to point fingers....
I actually gave Magnus a +1 for that comment, but I do think that people are playing fast and loose with modifiers like "repeatedly" and "many times over" to describe how the extent of support LC has given RR, and vice versa (perhaps this is why he is getting negged?). We can say things like "Carr repeatedly expressed his support for RichRod", or "RichRod many times over threw Carr under the bus", but it doesn't make it so. In '08 RR said a few things that implicated Carr in terms of 'the cupboard', and Carr said once or twice at the beginning of RR's tenure (or right after his hire) that he supports RR. RR may have pointed his finger, but I dont think it was 'repeatedly' (or purposefully for that matter) at Carr - perhaps only once or twice. Nobody has surfaced evidence of more than a few comments from both, nor from less than 2 years ago. Which is why we are having this discussion.
I would guess that not discussing the current staff was prearranged. He does mention in the second track around 4:50 how much he enjoyed "players who had respect for the tradition of Michigan" and I am sure someone will read into his use of the word "had"
Sill a great listen for people who love Michigan football. It is interesting to see how much more comfortable he is speaking to the media now.
Best of luck Lloyd
hang fiddy on ND, beat MSU and go 8-4, and who gives a rip.
I love Lloyd, but it's time to go. It ain't no picnic for any head coach to have your predecessor knocking around the hallways...
Four words...
Why do people even care. Please stop playing a part in turning following Michigan sports like watching a soap opera.
I hate this entire thread. He's retiring. He did great things for Michigan. Period. Leave it at that. The rest is just bored people triyng to turn my favorite rooting interesting into an episode of Montell Williaks.
